Hahah, just got back, and yeah, I did take the Jurassic Park truck. Like I said, my car was falling apart, so I started looking on Craigslist after checking dealerships. On day 2 of looking that truck was for sale for $1,300, I bought it on the Tuesday the 9th. It was just too hilarious not too. Obviously, it was for fun/moving stuff/camping, and while I've driven it to work a couple times for fun, it's not a 120+ mile a day commuting vehicle. All it needed were new tires (another $397) and it was good to go. Getting plates + a year registration was $22, and adding it to my insurance upped my rate by $64 a YEAR. So, all in all, the Truck cost just under $1800, and was a super easy, painless process.

I paid $8300 up front for the car, and dropped it off to get detailed (try to get the smoke smell out of it) as soon as I came back, another $150. The inspection at the Ford Dealership cost $98.

So yeah, as of right now, last month I spend around $10,300, which was almost entirely my savings, still leaving me with money in my bank account.

I spend a good portion of last night / this morning just taking groups of kids on rides in the Truck, because every single kid who see's the truck loses their shit. Not to mention when I came out of Safeway with ice and supplies yesterday morning, there was a group of like 12 people around it taking pictures, it's just funny as hell. I'm totally happy with that purchase.

I forget what else I was supposed to answer.. Was it just "Strapped for cash, why buy a jurassic park truck?!?!" At no point do I recall saying I was strapped for cash, I'm doing just fine, shit I think I'm doing pretty great, doesn't mean I'm happy to have thrown away a couple month's worth of paychecks. Before I left to go camping I made hotel reservations and bought tickets for Wet'n'Wild in a couple weeks, money's not tight, I'm just trying really hard to not get back in debt.

As far as people bringing up credit over and over. I've had plenty of debt in the past, never missed a payment. I'm sure I'm in the 800 range, assuming that's still up where it maxes out. For the last 10 months I've gotten to where I am paying every single bill and transaction on my credit card (Around 3k a month), and then paying off the credit card in full every month, to keep a rotating balance on it without ever paying any interest, while also maximizing my bonus points on the CC (Pretty sure I could cash that out for close to 1k right now already). Financially, I've got my shit together I think, other than the fact I'm not investing anywhere. So yeah, again, I could go finance a car right now, I would just rather that $350 payment a month go directly into my savings instead of towards interest on a loan. Not sure why I'm getting so much flak on that, I'm thrilled to be at a point in my life where that is an option.

Also, I took the wife and kids camping with me, we heard gunshots throughout the night, was this dumber than the craigslist thing. I'm really not sure why so many people are unbelieving I would go to meet strangers for a transaction, in a shopping center parking lot, during the day. I can't recall every hearing about a craigslist murder fitting that description. :p

Speaking of getting murdered, my wife needs help with housework. I'll check in later. Thanks for all the advice everyone, and I'll let you know what happens tomorrow, it should be the interesting day.

Tldr most of that, but I still don't get why you'd pay 8300 under shady circumstances for a shittier vehicle you paid 1300+390 for?

Hope you had a good trip man. Next week should be fun!

Just fuel statistics. I was curious how much a commute like that costs.

2009 Ford Focus SE:28 MPG
Tank Size:13.5 gallons
Median price of gas for your area:3.50
Average Daily Commute:120+ miles

Total to fill tank: $47.25
Miles per tank: ~378 miles
Miles driven per day: 120+
Number of days till empty: ~3 (3.15)

Let'say you do this Monday through Friday for a month (20 Work days) = 6.35 tanks of gas
$300/month gas
$3600/year gas
Does not include weekend driving/gas price fluxuation.

For lulz the GOVERNMENT website says your annual gas price for said vehicle is $1950.
I couldn't imagine driving 60 miles to work then 60 miles back. I mean you probably live where traffic isn't so bad but in the Dallas area I would have to drive through 3 or 4 cities worth of rush hour traffic.

Yeah, and to be honest it's actually closer to 150 miles per day, because once I get to work I tend to have to drive to various buildings all day. Typically I fill up on the weekend, then again Tuesday night, again Thursday, and again on the weekend. Rinse and repeat. The drive itself is pretty flat and straight however, a few turns here and there, but I go a couple 20 minute stretches where I'm literally just driving straight with flat desert all around. I typically pass 1 to 3 cars each way, although some days I never see another soul, and others I get stuck behind massive groups of motorcycles cruising route 66.

The drive sucks, but Kingman is a small town, and finding IT jobs here is a bitch, and wages could literally be $9 an hour with 10 years experiance, it's terrible, hence the commute. Someone mentioned me sounding super cheap earlier, and yeah, I'm sure as fuck trying to be. The more money I have saved up, the greater chance I have of convincing my wife to move somewhere else, in fact, I started a thread asking about New Zealand in the travel thread, as thats kind of a pipedream for me. So yeah, I'm not a car guy, if there was some public transportation option, I would hop on that, but as it is I have to have one. I just hate throwing away all of my savings on it, and hated the thought of using that all on a down payment while owing 10k more in payments, even though, yes, that was\is an option.

No matter what happens, it's not the end of the world, I just flipped out Friday and wanted some outside viewpoints, suuuuuper surprised the thread got more than 3 responses honestly!

DO NOT MAIL THE PLATES TO ANYONE.

She has the title, meaning she legally owns the car. The second Titlemax has the plates she can go in and just demand them. I would not trust some sketchy loan shark to handle arbitration.

Unfortunately this is something people on Craigslist do a lot. They negotiate for some price and then when you get there try to screw you around. I once had a guy contact me about a speaker cabinet I was selling on Craigslist. We made a deal for him buying it for $350. It was in mint condition, never left my bedroom. When we met up (At burger king), he said he'd give me $250 at most for it. I think he figured that I drove all that way, I'd probably just take it. He drove around 40 miles, I drove 2.5. No deal shithead. Anytime I deal with people on Craigslist and they try anything that isn't what they originally said I back out.

Anyways, the credit/loan thing is neither here nor there because at this point the damage has already been done. I truly hope the lawyers can straighten this out because honestly I cringe when I read about this. No matter the red flags, nobody deserves to have to deal with shitheads like this. I think people are generally cheering for you, but a little confused on why you didn't back out or go another route.

Your surprised? Really? Look, I am not trying to be harsh here, but the level of stupidity in decision after decision you made in that scenario would rustle anyone's jimmies. Oddly enough, you do seem to be taking this well for someone who lost $6k-$8k.

Thanks for being the 30th person to post what he already stated in the thread title.
