Honestly, I doubt that the idiot girl and her boyfriend set out to scam him. It's probably some sort of fucked up misunderstanding that spiraled out of control. Scum bags like them are very adept at imagining the whole world being out to get them (hence why their lives are shit, right!? It's not their fault!). It's likely that in their minds Onoes was out to screw them, some how or way, by holding on to the plates. And they only cleared a couple thousand because of the lien, and that's probably his fault too! The car was worth way more than that! So fuck him! We'll show him what's what!

And thoughts like that is why you'll never be a true criminal mastermind!

My guess is that addiction factors into this somehow because it's just so absolutely dumb.

Something is extremely fishy here. I'm sorry, but you are omitting a shit load of details. I feel like you told her as soon as you got home you'd mail the plates. On your way home you went "Oh shit, I don't have any proof I bought the car, so I'll keep the plates until I get the title" as if that somehow proves anything... She got extremely pissed off and basically said to herself fuck this guy I'm not sending the title if he isn't going to keep his side of the bargain.... Stupid shit ensued, and the situation is now where it's at.

To summarize I'm pretty sure you rationalized not keeping your word, and holding onto her plates. She was pissed knowing it would cost her a fine for whatever reason, and decided not to send you the title. You then felt like your concerns were justified at that point and continued to refuse to send the plates.

The few messages you posted corroborate my theory. Not to mention all the other dumb shit that's out of wack. Why would the TitleMax guy know her boyfriend was in jail? Why would he know that money was used to get him out of Jail? Why would TitleMax not let her pickup and sign the title over the day it was paid off? Why won't the cops get involved? I had an incident where I bought an item off a forum for a few grand and the dude never shipped it and never intended to. Called up his local PD after finding his address, and they called to harass him, and one week later I had the full amount mailed to me in the form of a check.

A+ post for entertainment value though.

For anyone curious you can go to TitleMax's website and live chat with a rep. I just did and the rep said most titles should be received same day as payoff. Obviously not super conclusive, but interesting none the less. Makes me wonder why you didn't just say ok i'll come back when the title is here and will finish the deal...

These two points I think aren't that odd. People run their mouths constantly. Its entirely possible that the employees had seen this woman more than once, knew her whole sob story and talked about it behind her back.

Otherwise, your post makes a lot of sense. I could see how this is all Onoes' side of the story and he basically fucked up worse trying to backtrack his own fuck up, and they responded with some stupid backlash that exacerbated the whole thing.

Once again dude. These prove my theory. Both of you are stubborn idiots. Here's a tip. The plates don't help you. They are not leverage in a car sale. Obviously she's a dumb bitch, but next time mail her the plates! The very fact she thought it was ok for you to keep them, and then realized later that she would incur a heavy fine is proof of this. Obviously she should've just shot you a bill of sale, but you also should've just mailed off her plates.

I mean come on. What kind of scam involves getting their plates? Fuck if anything her having the plates helps you, because it's like "Oh yeah I stole the car, but then I mailed her the plates!"....

FWIW I think most cell companies will provide you with certified copies of all text messages that you want for a fee. Probably better than printing them yourself (for court)

And I should say that on Judge Judy or whatever, I've seen stuff like this before. Some guy will go "well this person wouldn't send me this, so I withhold their 'other thing'" and they get reamed out for it because that's still illegal. You always do the right thing and this will make them seem more guilty in the long run. If they needed plates to avoid fees you may be out those fees now.
