my kid is 2.5 - although I tell myself she won't have a phone with internet until she's like 14 and we can have a number of discussions with her, I do really wonder how long we'll be able to make it. Still hoping something happens culturally to make her age group shun this shit

The phones come into the equation because as a parent you want your kid to be able to call you or call for help if needed. That's how it starts. It goes downhill from there.

there are plenty of bricked options with just phone/text, but ya, likely downhill from there

I had PPP dialup with raw access to the Web, Usenet, IRC and a unix shell account when I was 12, when NCSA Mosiac was the only web browser and Netscape Navigator not quite released yet. My parents had literally no fucking idea what I was doing on the personal phone line they installed for me. It might as well have been actual sorcery. They would not let me have a bike or leave the house, but totally unsupervised and unmoderated internet access? NO PROBLEM.

And look? I turned out totally fine.

You're an ongoing statistical anomaly in almost every way so...

Honestly I wouldn't be worried that much about unrestricted internet access if it was our internet back in the late 90's very early 2k (when I assume you had it). Decent shot she'd walk outa that a tech billionaire vs todays where she'll walk out a cam whore, trans lesbo, react expert, depressed suicidal zombie or more likely, a combination of all that

lol. IRC was definitely filled with creepy dudes who wanted to rape me, even back then.

I would say the thing that's scary about mobile internet is that the camera is right there, integrated into every app on the device. If I had a kid I would open up and physically break the camera connection on a phone that I gave that kid until they were at least 16.

i'm much less worried about rape meet ups vs social media at large, and porn as a secondary worry

I've made it to 11 so far, but...

I'm about to hit this.

Best advice I can give is as much as I hate iPhones, use them. They have the ability to basically mirror your kids phone so you can watch everything they do/text etc. You just gotta teach them the right way and monitor it for compliance. Wife and I have Androids but had a cheap spare iPhone to monitor my daughter's phone. An ipad can do it too.

I would almost worry less about porn than I would social media and rap music and it's culture.

I think modern porn for pubescent children is devastating - it's all hard core unrealistic bullshit at best, if you can get past the incest insanity that's plaguing the industry right now.

It's my second worry after social media as a whole.

Hard to say what kind of communication devices we'll be using in 2035...

First worry should definitely be people who want to rape your kids.
Second should be kids being pressured into sending private pictures of themselves, which is really bad, but still not as bad as #1.
Third should be kids viewing hardcore porn, but by 14 you can already assume they've seen all the worst shit. Even before internet video I remember seeing VHS tapes with girls getting rammed by tree-trunk sized objects while I played D&D with my mostly male friends, and that was probably like age 15.
Fourth worry should be whether your kid is stupid.

Everything else seems easily recoverable.

Modern rap music? It's all mumble/auto-tune bullshit, the only reason to worry about it is if your kid actually likes it, see #4.

Your kids' eyes are only as safe as the most permissive parent of any kid they interact with. I remember being put in 10th grade Biology when I was 13-14 and the teacher made me sit at a lab table with these two guys who were absolutely disgusting edgelord perverts who simultaneously thought I was cool because I was really into computers and Usenet/BBSes like they were, but would try to force me to look at really disgusting porno mags and constantly talked about wanting to rape me and murder my parents and would put dissected animal eyeballs/body parts in the hood of my hoodie.

Wow didn't take long to get into your disgusting statistically low/random anecdotes stemming from what appears to be a household probably worse than most dirt poor inner city ghetto kids grow up in. Also glad to see that you quickly went from "internet lure/meet up rape" to "just strait rape" in a discussion about access to the internet for children. That makes a lot of sense Mist. Of course I have other worries other than internet related stuff, but we're talking about a specific topic here dude.

Social Media
Porn

Those are my two internet related worries as a parent, in that order.

Gabb phones/watches are a good option to keep real phones away from kids and still allow them to contact those you designate as well as track them.

yeah, its not that I'm worried they'll see tits. Its the context. modern mainstream porn is a horror show without even looking for anything weird.

I mean, thats what I've heard from friends and stuff.

The problem isn't what you do its what other dipshit parents do and give 5 year olds fully unlocked iphones in kindergarten.
