I'll laugh if my DAL call at 33$ ends up safe by the end of the week. Also glad I sold all my CCL at 19

Moderna will likely be reporting efficacy data soon for its COVID vaccine. If you feel like gambling, this could really swing things up or down in the coming days (weeks?) depending on their efficacy numbers. All their data so far has looked great, but with such an early readout from a small number of positive cases (probably less than 100), a few patients can really affect the protection numbers. They'll be shooting for at least 90% since Pfizer kind of set the bar high. I can't remember if the testing criteria are different for the Moderna vs Pfizer trials.

FWIW I was reading about some issues with Pfizer’s vaccine such as needing to be stored at super cold temperatures prior to use that make me think it will not be the ideal choice unless nothing else works.

People have already been speculating and playing investments into the cold storage chain.

Pfizer Vaccine Success Opens a Hot Stock-Market Trade

  • Pfizer’s vaccine needs to be stored at -70 degrees celsius
  • Shares of firms offering industrial cooling solutions surging

The news about Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE’s Covid-19 vaccine has spurred a speculative frenzy in a relatively niche corner of Asia’s stock market.

In South Korea, freezer and cooling circulator maker Daihan Scientific Co. and deep freezer supplier IlShinbiobase Co. rallied further after surging as much as 30% on Tuesday. In Japan, kitchen refrigerator maker Hoshizaki Corp. has added almost 10% over the past two sessions, while peer Fukushima Galilei Co. rose the most intraday in more than two years on Wednesday. Over in India, Snowman Logistics Ltd. was up again after jumping as much as 15% on Tuesday.

Shares in freezing firms are hot on speculation over vaccine logistics

Unlike regular vaccines, Pfizer’s messenger RNA-based shot must be stored at an ultra-cool temperature of around -70 degrees celsius (-94 degrees Fahrenheit) to avoid it from going bad. While logistics firms around the world operate cold chains, they run in nothing like those temperatures.

In many regions, no one’s quite sure yet as to which companies have the requisite capabilities and would thus stand to benefit from handling the product that almost everyone in the world would want to get their hands on. That seems to have put the focus on firms offering industrial cooling solutions.

“Investors are speculatively buying these names on the logistical difficulties of delivering these vaccines,” said Masayuki Otani, chief market strategist at Securities Japan Inc.

Given the bets the market has already seen in different phases of the pandemic -- from makers of ventilators to suppliers of medical gloves -- it’s no surprise this new phase is attracting attention. But it’s unclear if the private sector is equipped as yet to meet such a demand, and whether it makes sense over the long-term.

Twinbird Boxes

Private firms “would have likely to invest, as none of them would be ready for the load,” said Sebastien Galy, a senior macro strategist at Nordea Investment Funds SA in Luxembourg. “For private companies as a one off cost, it may be too large.”

Existing solutions may be best, especially when it comes to getting the vaccine to developing countries. Japanese consumer electronics maker Twinbird Corp. has soared more than 50% in the two sessions since the Pfizer news broke. It makes freezer boxes using a helium-based technology in collaboration with Global Cooling Inc. Similar boxes could be one solution, UBS analysts wrote in a note this week.

“These are easily available,” the analysts wrote, “and could reach temps low enough to transport a vaccine with the aid of dry ice.”

Trane Technologies Inc. and Carrier Global Corp. are among U.S. stocks that offer such boxes, according to UBS. Makers of liquid nitrogen could also be ones to watch, Securities Japan’s Otani said.

I know people are securing profits on PLTR now, but I don't think I will hold through earnings. DL is much different than a big stink IPO but while I do believe this a grower...

I can't see how they would have anything that would keep this going at this pace. Will reevaluate post earnings. I don't mind being wrong on this one anyway, very happy with the profits. A lesson I wish I learned 5 years ago. Secure profits and chase the next swing.

If PLTR was any other stock I would have sold my calls and ride the train no matter what happens. What PLTR needs to explode is to pick up more non-govt clients. My understanding is the CEO spent 200 days this year doing nothing but meeting potential business clients. They don't need to make big earnings tonight. I think the estimate is a few pennies. They need to show non-govt client growth. Thats the key to this stock being one of the specials. I'm up like 60% or so and I'm willing to throw the dice. Worse that happens im wrong it plunges back to 9 or 10 and I'm still invested in the only conservative leaning tech company. I'm ok with that.

I agree with that sentiment. Hell, I may even re-enter post earnings but I do expect it to drop. Magical sky faeries told me, thats what I tell myself anyway.

A cost to revenue chart for SAAS companies. PLTR is number 2 behind CRWD. Now granted that is skewed by their govt customers who aren't going to a competitor.
