Disney wouldn't just take their ball and go home completely. They will reach an agreement regardless but AMC carries every movie that has Disney mildly associated with it, for Iron man you're looking at only (lol) 1/5 of their screens. For other movies that smaller theaters otherwise don't give a shit about and aren't cash cows that people give a shit about you're looking at upwards of 1/3 of their screens for flicks.

Disney isn't just going to walk away from that kind of money.

This will be exclusively an Iron man thing, which is why this is the first you're hearing of it. This isn't the only Disney associated movie out at the moment or coming out soon. Disney probably just wants a bigger chunk with Iron Man and AMC is saying go fuck yourself.

I hate AMC and I refuse to go to their theaters so I would laugh if somehow they lose big, but they wont.

This is no different then then when Fox went to war with providers, eventually both sides buckled.

rofl god you're stupid
cool story bro. Iron Man 2 domestically grossed $312,433,331. Iron man 3 Budget is just over $200,000,000. (which in on par with Iron Man 2) If you think Disney is cool with losing 1/5 of that, perhaps upwards to 1/4 you're silly. Disney will compromise.

But then you've always been pretty silly.

Movie theaters owners always get the short end of the deals because ultimately the product being sold is the movie, not the theater. This is such an unbalanced situation that distributors can almost get away with murder. We are talking imposing new equipment costs on theaters (3D, DCP, etc), forcing package deals (if you want to show this blockbuster you'll also have to show these three mediocre comedies), not transferring savings (a DCP is a lot cheaper to make than a film print), increased share of ticket sales taken for blockbusters, etc... To the point showing movies is really not the business of movie theaters. Movies are really only there to bring people to consume at an overpriced snack bar.

This is obviously a bit of a caricature, but you get the idea.

Disney isn't going to compromise. AMC will back down. The exhibitors have no power in the movie industry.

I'd disagree, we're basically dealing with two companies. One company had hundreds of millions already spent and needs to recoup, the other company has nothing spent in this project in particular.

In the end, middle group will probably be met and to prevent other chains from pulling the same stunt the agreement will be secret.

What's this bullshit with Disney?!
As of right now you can't purchase tickets for Iron Man 3 and may not be showing. I prepurchased mine for the midnight IMAX showing. A week away from release and they pull this shit?!
Luckily the theatre I go to is neither AMC or Regal so no worries for me.

Same, AMC sucks. Last time I went there a girl in front of me wanted a refill on her popcorn so the guy took her bag, dumped what she had left into the bin, mixed it up and refilled her bag.

I turned around and that was my last time I ever stepped foot in an AMC.

If AMC doesn't show Iron Man 3 can't most people just drive 10 minutes further down the road to a different theatre and give them our money?

They can, though in Northern MN where I used to live that requires a 80 minute drive to do so.

But for the most part yes, that's possible but it will slow down their return a lot and they would lose some in the long run.

Like I said, I hope AMC losses it. Fuck AMC.

Thankful we have more options than we used to in Vegas. Used to be predominantly Century, now we have Regal in several casinos, since AMC bought Rave we have a couple of those too, and a Brenden in the Palms (our onlyDolby ATMOS theater, so awesome).

Now this opened on my side of town... aGalaxy Theaterwith draft beer, wine service, recliners, and when you buy/order tickets you pick your seat like a concert.

I've never understood why we don't do this at normal movie theaters in the USA. When I was overseas this was standard: you'd buy your tickets and you'd have a concert/venue style screen where you could select the specific row and number you wanted to sit in. That meant you didn't have to show up to a movie 30 minutes early to make sure you got a decent seat. I wish this would become common in the States.

I remember going to see Thor a couple years ago on a Sunday afternoon shortly after opening and even getting to the theater 30 minutes before the start time resulted in shitty seats towards the side of the theater.

in my area we are pretty AMC dominated. though we have a couple of showcase cinema's "nearby" (20 minute drive ~15 miles)

and we do have a chunky's movie/restaurant 30 minutes away nothing beats showing up hr before a movie getting beer/drinks and dinner, then watching the movie-without moving from your seat

We have both in the UK, which leads to problems. Basically you turn up with your ticket and see that someone came early and sat in it, then you need to decide if you are British enough to take a different seat or ask them to move!

The Megaplex theaters do that. At least the ones around here do.

Not sure if this was mentioned before... but as I am in China, I will get to watch an extra 20 minutes of Iron Man 3... apparently there are some chinese actors getting some extra screen time...

Normally China gets shortened movies (nude or inappropriate things cut out) not extra long ones! If its 20 minutes of propaganda, I would not be surprised! If its not posted all over the net before I finish seeing it, I will make sure to talk about it here...

AMC and Regal can suck a fat one ever since the fake IMAX debacle (which is still happening).

Brand new Regal opening near me with an IMAX*? Who cares

* Digital Projector made by IMAX for smaller screens.

I feel like this is the same bullshit that happened with preproduction of the Hobbit. I cant remember all of the details, but it was basically a bunch of hype over what people were going to get paid and where it was going to be filmed. The media was making it out like it was some kind of J. R. R.mageddon and the movie was never going to be completed. In the end, it all happened and pretty much on schedule. I really dont remember any side being terribly unhappy in the end.

If it did have to go one way or the other, I see AMC/Regal being the ones to fold. You are correct, Disney wants to recoup what they have spent and they know they will with or without those two chains. AMC and Regal need to decide at this point if they want a small piece of the pie or none at all.

That's odd indeed. That might have something to do with the antagonist being The Mandarin. Maybe the chinese version adds some scene to make it more... culturally sensitive. Or have an actual chinese actor play the part instead of Ben Kingsley?
