I have a Surface Pro 3 for a work laptop, so I haven't owned a personal one in a while, but I've usually owned MacBooks. My main device at home these days is a 12.9" iPad Pro. I does just about everything I want it to do except PC gaming. So, I picked up the new 15" MacBook Pro the other day (I only do light gaming). It's a great machine but I can't justify the high price for the little bit more I need. I'm going to return it.

Best Buy had a BF deal on the HP Spectre X360 that I've heard good things about. I got it with an i7, 16GB ram, 512 SSD for under $1200 after tax. It's a great little machine. Windows Hello is rather neat. I'm going to see how Civ 6 runs on it. I may keep it if it can play it at decent settings. If not, back it goes, and I look for another thin and light laptop.

Looking for a solid gaming laptop for about $1,000.

Was considering

HP - OMEN 15.6" Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M - 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD - Onyx Black

or

https://www.amazon.com/GL502VT-DS71...qid=1480191276&sr=1-28&keywords=gaming+laptop

any suggestions? Was hoping to get into a 1060 GTX, but that doesnt seem to work. Leaning toward the Omen because of the SSD

Browsing slickdeals I saw this. CyberpowerPC Vector 17 VR 17.3" 1080P IPS, i7-6700HQ, 16GB DDR4, GTX 1060 6GB, 480GB SSD, USB Type-C Gen2, WiFi AC, HyperX Could Stinger @ $958.55 with F/S 11-27-2016 Has a 1060 GTX and a decent sized SSD. I cannot speak to the quality of the cyberpowerpc laptops though.

My wife has trashed her laptop to the point it's fan and charger don't work half the time so it's looking like we need to get a new one!

We're mainly after a budget one as she does her paper work on it at the weekends and watches YouTube etc. I'd like to get one that is capable of playing WoW when I get the urge every 9-12 months. Would a modern budget laptop allow me to play WoW as it's an older game? Her old laptop (6 years old and budget back then) played a WoW but when I would raid I'd pretty much just stare at the floor and mash buttons to avoid graphics lag.

We're thinking something like

HP 15-ay170sa 15.6" Laptop with Latest 7th Gen Intel® Core™ i3 processor - Silver

Question!

If a laptop has a GTX 1070 but the laptop's display is just capable of 60 Hz and 1920 x 1080...

can you hook it up to a better external display using the HDMI and take advantage of a better refresh rate and better resolution?

Yes. Just about every laptop I've used has a monitor jack.

Sister in law looking at a new cheap laptop. Used for school, so MS Office, some Youtube videos, and that's about it. She found this one and asked recommendations. Anyone seen a better deal?

Amazon.com: Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM 15.6-Inch Full HD Notebook (Intel Core i3-7100U Processor 7th Generation , 4GB DDR4, 1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive, Intel HD Graphics 620, Windows 10 Home), Obsidian Black: Computers & Accessories

I'd look at this.
Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad E460 (20ET0014US) Intel Core i5 6th Gen 6200U (2.30 GHz) 4 GB Memory 500 GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 520 14.0" Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit (downgrade from Windows 10 Pro) - Newegg.com

I'm a big fan of 14" as a laptop size, I find 15.6 to be too large for lugging around, especially if your doing schooling and opening it on a desk. 14" and 13.3" are the perfect size for a laptop to bring around, but still large enough that you don't hate staring at them for hours straight. It's not 1080, but honestly on the smaller screens its not as noticeable.

I've mentioned it before in this thread, for something like that I recommend chromebooks. Can do word processing thru Google Docs, play Youtube videos etc. Most are smaller sizes and easy enough to carry around for school. The price just can't be beat if she does want to go cheaper.
