While BDO is pretty fun and definitely playable without paying, it uses the same system of "soft P2W" or something like that as many KR games adopted in the west, which seems to fit the description of this too. Like you can play without paying(although there's some strong incentive to at least spend SOME money, for example the tent, some additional maids, a cooking costume, char slots because there's so few and so on) but you can also swipe the card a bunch to progress much faster and skip a lot of the grind. BDO at least caps you per week so you can't just swipe from newb to god instantly, but the amount of ressources you can accumulate every month from swiping your card a bunch is pretty massive once your family level is high enough to have the bigger cap.BDO is more popular and less P2W than ever, unlike most other KR games.
It's not as bad as it was at launch though from what I understand. You're given several pets for free in the story, as well as via events so you can actually never buy one and be fine, same for mount, and even same for costumes, you can get some pretty nice looking armor for free out of the last few story questlines. So if you're not concerned about progressing as fast as possible, spending like 40-50bucks(which is a reasonable amount since the game is cheap/free, so it's basically like buying the box) will get you comfortable enough.
I don't know how much of that will be true with Lost Ark, but from the sound of it, it will have the faster progression as you spend money thing. Some people just don't like the idea that whales will progress faster, even if they themselves don't have to. I doubt it'll be actually P2W in the original sense of if you don't pay, you can't actually progress at all, this type of game doesn't sell at all, but I somewhat expect you'll have to spend 40-50$ for a basic level of QoL(pets, costumes and such) and then you'll be able to keep spending to progress faster if you want.
