BDO is more popular and less P2W than ever, unlike most other KR games.
While BDO is pretty fun and definitely playable without paying, it uses the same system of "soft P2W" or something like that as many KR games adopted in the west, which seems to fit the description of this too. Like you can play without paying(although there's some strong incentive to at least spend SOME money, for example the tent, some additional maids, a cooking costume, char slots because there's so few and so on) but you can also swipe the card a bunch to progress much faster and skip a lot of the grind. BDO at least caps you per week so you can't just swipe from newb to god instantly, but the amount of ressources you can accumulate every month from swiping your card a bunch is pretty massive once your family level is high enough to have the bigger cap.

It's not as bad as it was at launch though from what I understand. You're given several pets for free in the story, as well as via events so you can actually never buy one and be fine, same for mount, and even same for costumes, you can get some pretty nice looking armor for free out of the last few story questlines. So if you're not concerned about progressing as fast as possible, spending like 40-50bucks(which is a reasonable amount since the game is cheap/free, so it's basically like buying the box) will get you comfortable enough.

I don't know how much of that will be true with Lost Ark, but from the sound of it, it will have the faster progression as you spend money thing. Some people just don't like the idea that whales will progress faster, even if they themselves don't have to. I doubt it'll be actually P2W in the original sense of if you don't pay, you can't actually progress at all, this type of game doesn't sell at all, but I somewhat expect you'll have to spend 40-50$ for a basic level of QoL(pets, costumes and such) and then you'll be able to keep spending to progress faster if you want.

Yeah, about pets. They auto-loot for you, but wait, there's more! If you pay the blue crystals (get a few as rewards for leveling up your legacy or you can buy off cash shop, OR you can buy for gold from a player who buys them off cash shop. There's a separate AH just for this. Pay those crystals and your pet gives (temporary, 30 days at a time?) you AH access anywhere, repair access, etc. Plus a couple random stat boosts that you can spend to reroll. Also, costumes aren't just for looks, like pets they come in rare/legendary types and give a % boosts to your main stat, which increases your attack power, and lets you reach the (HIDDEN) AP gates in endgame content. Yeah, all endgame shit has a gearscore entry requirement, but if you try to do that stuff immediately, your attacks will be doing like 60% less damage.

Yes..ok. The costumes give you a minimal stat boost that won't keep you alive, and not having one isn't going to stop you from doing content, lol.

I never said it would keep you alive, or that not having it would prevent you from doing any content? Why the fuck would more Attack Power keep you alive? lol Costumes are just an easy way to reach the AP gates. Never stated or implied that anything from the cash shop was required to play the game. Fuck, I've played RU since day one and until 2 months ago hadn't spent a dime. Finally did just because I needed a couple more char slots for Scouter and Reaper, and figured since I was doing that anyway, might as well buy a couple level skips.

All I'm saying is the core design of the game is built around making money. You can play for free just fine. You can log in for 2 hours a day and do your dailies and weeklies and spend your meager amount of gold on gear upgrade attempts and then log out and play something fun.

The only part of the game that is actually well designed is the arena PVP. Completely normalized, and if they have the addition that RU got recently, you get access to the max skill points now too. So, if you just want to pvp, all you gotta do is hit level 50. No money, no stupid grinds, like the hoops they make you jump through for the last 40 or so SP. Still gotta do the ridiculously long and boring quest for your second Awakening skill though. Not as bad as it was before Season 2 though, when you needed to complete 20 island quest lines to get a specific sailor for your ship to be able to reach the final island and complete the quest.

It's a fun game to play with friends. We were just G-ing through whatever quest dialogue and whatever there was and just having a good time wandering around beating shit up while chatting on Discord.

Shame the actual release is so far off

Perhaps he means remapped? I was struggling until I moved all the action skills to be numbers so I could NAGA it up. While the game feels very 'spam everything' at first you soon realize that you actually need to be somewhat tactical with your rotation and combination of abilities / perks in order to really be effective.

I played the hell out of this on the RU servers a long time ago - before the assassin classes were even added. Definitely in for this in NA, as having to switch regions, create RU e-mails etc was just a massive PITA. I had 3 classes at 50 then (Berserker, Bard, Infighter) and enjoyed the journey to 50. I have a hazy memory of end game but kind of remember burning out for some reason.

Fired up last night to finally play Demonic and Blade - all in on Demonic. Really looking forward to release now - definitely a fun game to group up with others - will have to friend some of you punks to mow down raids with.

Honestly at this point I don't care about endgame or whatever, just having fun leveling classes, combat is definitely fun.

Right. There are those in this thread who have expressed fear of the game being the "bad" version of p2w, and your posts seemed (to me) to inflate the effect of the Shop on a players experience with the game. I'm going into this knowing I'll dislike that Amazon/SG will be selling ways for people to bypass the ingame limits on content... I really hate that being a thing, but it won't effect how I play.

I see myself playing this exactly how I've played WoW expansions for years and years. Get a character to max level, run all the dungeons up to Heroic, but not be interested in raids or mythics at all. So if I hadn't bought a Founders pack, I could see myself buying a pet and costumes, and if its going to be in this version maybe some crystals for extra if I need it to upgrade gear.

Also, apparently a dev made a post on their forums saying that a 15th class will be revealed for the upcoming Beta. This beta will be after some festival that Lost Ark has showcasing upcoming content, and this year one of things they will be showing off is the Elementalist class....so maybe that will be the 15th class we get. Would be funny.

So each of the base classes (Warrior, Gunner, Martial Artist, Mage, Assassin) is missing one of the advanced classes that are currently in the Korean game? This is on top of the 6th base class not being present at all.

The naming convention / localization is making this weird since in the NA version they refer to the Gunner as a Specialist in their prologue story but Specialist is the translated name of the 6th base class in Korea.

I get what you're saying. The term "p2w" is just overused and mostly misused, I pretty much ignore it outside of straight pvp focused games like Archeage etc. Lost Ark is just basically "pay or grind, oh and your grind will be arbitrarily limited" which I hate. And I only have so much hate for this (and other crap) in this game because it has the foundations to be shitloads better. I'm still trying to decide if I even want to play this version. There's SO MUCH boring tedious side shit that I've already done on RU that I don't want to repeat, including the borefest of getting to 50.

I would love if they announced Scouter or Reaper. Getting Elementalist before even KR would be weird. Maybe getting Striker before RU might be more likely. Already strange that NA is getting Gunslinger before RU.

Let's see. Warrior is missing Destroyer (?) the hammer guy. Martial Artist is missing Lance Master. Gunner is missing Scout. Assassin is missing Reaper. Mage is missing Gambit, I mean, Arcana. The Specialist classes is something that's just been talked about. I think when they decided to starting gender bending that got pushed back. According to the Wiki they are
  • Specialist: Astrologer, Musician, Alchemist.
I assume they were originally going to be the male caster classes.

Also, I didn't play much of the alpha, but the translations were all over the place, and didn't match the voiced dialogue half the time, lol.

Written dialogue not matching voice is pretty common early on cause they have either an earlier or later script to do the voice acting. There were a bunch of typos and some stuff that were called by 2 different names so yeah it's definitely early work for the translation, but from my understanding most of the game is already available(well what they're expecting to launch with), so it's a bunch of stuff to translate versus a capped alpha, so not too surprising. Several months to fix the script which should be plenty to get it to passable levels.

Can't wait to check out how the dwarven continent end quest song and dance broadway number turns out. Wish I could find a video of the Russian version. It's so ridiculous and over the top.

This is just what we needed to have a game to play and chat...

But we need it now and it won't come out until October. This whole year of quarantine has been a collosal missed opportunity for MMO and CO-OP devs.

Other affected industries managed to all-hands-on-deck with this once in a lifetime chance to shuffle the marketplace and yet game devs just kinda sat around doing nothing.
