Something like 3% of the general population have served in the military, I bet 50% of the people on this forum have.

I know the old site used to have a huge thread on service, did it not make the transition over?

I'd bet it's a lot less than 50 percent but still significantly higher than the 3 percent figure.

I do seem to recall some kind of service thread I thought that shoulda been on the newest iteration of the forum. Might be in grown up rather than say screenshots.

I wasnt military, but half my guild (Magister) was either Navy, Ex Navy or active Army. oh and some ex AF (which for some odd reason had moved over to JDL). some were even raiding with us while deployed in Iraq. no fucking idea how they made that happen. they never talked about it out loud, but i did get a few /tells letting me know they were late for raid because they had army shit going on.

I joined in 1989, got out in 1993. I go to school at night and the school had a special guest speaker Tuesday. First time I have worn that uniform in 28 years, the fabric has shrunk quite a bit.

'MURICA!

I didn't serve but being from the south, lots of folks around have. I really should have instead of college, though I'm not sure they'd take me, being blind in one eye.

You can get a waiver for just about anything.

Yea, i kind of figured I'd get put to use in some other way. I can still shoot a gun left handed (which is fabulous when firing a shotgun), but I can't judge distance for shit.

French version here; the % is dropping all the time, but we had compulsory one-year in military service until 1997. You could delay it a bit if you were doing college/university, but you needed medical waiver to avoid it. Or be female.

I did mine in the navy. I almost got an extension, because it was the first gulf war, and you could go on the aircraft carrier (prestige post) but needed to reup for the duration. Then I got an offer for AI work so it didn't occur. I did reserve instead ("the weekend military"). My brother in-law was reserve also in the army, but he got discharged (early onset Parkinson, bleh).

Want some fucked up statistics? Look at home of records for those who served in the military.

Liberal strongholds are at the bottom of the barrel in terms of participation rates.

You're not likely to get one if you're blind in an eye but yeah. We had a guy in my Divefarer class that had many, many knee surgeries from wrecking his ACL playing college football. Reasonably sure that dude ended up getting his trident, guy was a beast.

I only did 4 years in the AF working on 15's but it got me a pretty good job without having to drag my ass back to college. I'll take it.

Okay I've expended my gung ho allotment for the year. Not even Veteran's day yet! Shit. I should at least get my free Steak and Shake.

Every day should be Vet's day, sperg out all you want, you guys deserve it.

I am ashamed to say I never enlisted. I had decided to join the Marines the summer after my senior year but that spring I met a girl we started dating and I ended up following her to college. We married and have been together now for nearly 28 years but I still regret not joining.

You shouldn't, people serve so you can do exactly what you did.

I think my generation was horrifically deceived. we were told "go to college. all these options are viable. military bad". when in reality military service would have helped more with actual training, look good on resume, better self discipline, and I could have used the GI bill to save some money.

now logically there's some professions that absolutely get some substance from their degree, but tons arn't and colleges / boomer parents smoke and mirrors you into thinking college is always good.

Dude, big reason why I joined the Army was because my mom kept telling me, "go to university or you will work at McDonald's for life!" I didn't really know what I wanted to study or anything yadda yadda.

When she didn't go to university herself. Yet she built multiple businesses and ran all of them for like 40 years before she sold them and retired. My father is a commercial fisherman who only had a degree because he got a football scholarship to Oregon State back in the early 1970's.

They were the worst examples conceivable for telling me that I absolutely had to go to university.
