Guess it's never too early to start prepping for July 31st. Article from Anthony Castrovince on some trade deadline predictions. 5 very early predictions for the MLB Trade Deadline.

Gerrit Cole to the Yanks - Find it very possible. Yanks have always been enamored with him, and originally drafted him. Some recent injuries probably keep Cole's price from being astronomical as well. Could see a Frazier & Sheffield package along with a bottom Top 10 guy from the farm fetching him.

Cueto to the Astros - Could also see this. The Bumgarner injury blows, and the Giants won't completely blow up by any means. Cueto has an option at the end of the year, so he is essentially a rental.

Darvish to the Cubs - Would be a rental, but sadly the Rangers have been bad so far. Cubs finished 2nd in the original bidding and his stuff could dominate in the NL. Cubs also have two major prospects (Jimenez & Happ) that are blocked on the big league level for quite awhile. Makes sense all the way around.

Cain to Indians - Guess the front runner in the house for Lorenzo Cain has been the Nationals after the Eaton injury. Guess we'll see. Cain would be a major upgrade defensively for the Indians, and I'm not sure how much more the Nats could give up after spending a shit ton of assets on Eaton.

Quintana stays put - Who knows.

While that is intriguing, the Astros will stay away from that kind of money, especially if it is a player option, not a club option, with Altuve wanting to renegotiate, Springer coming due to Free Agency, and Correa with 3 to 4 years left of club control.

Johnny Cueto rhp
6 years/$130M (2016-21), plus 2022 option

    • $5M signing bonus (paid in $1M installments each 1/15, 2017-21)
    • 16:$15M, 17-21:$21M/year, 22:$22M club option ($5M buyout)
    • assignment bonus: $0.5M for first trade, $1M for subsequent trades

Yeah I think they'd have to: A) Still be in command of a playoff spot and B) Fairly certain that he is going to opt out. If he pitches well enough in the first half I imagine he would.

And Jesus, that Athletics ticket deal is fucking insane. That should help fill the park.

Interesting promotion, since it's just guaranteed access to the game, not to a seat. If, for some reason, the game sold out through traditional means, you wouldn't have a seat. Obviously that's not a huge threat, though.

The stadium has only been a third full for even the best promotions this season. Highly doubt anyone who participates is in danger except for maybe Yankees and Red Sox games.

A lot of the local talk points to Cueto getting another contract with the Giants.

Oh damn, that was hilarious.

Freddie Freeman out 10 weeks, which is a shame. Ever since the all-star last year, dude has turned into a monster.

It cracks me up that Blue Jays' fans wonder why they are so hated. Fuck that team. It's amazing how they managed to build a roster full of nearly complete douchebags. Donaldson, Bautista, Tulo, Pillar all are massive tools.

Can we please send Soler to the minors now. How long can we tolerate a mid 100 batting average and a propensity to turn singles into triples on defense?

And Donaldson is a little bitch

That royals lineup for the second game is the worst lineup in the history of lineups, maybe ever.

Scouting Shohei Otani

So, this is the current "Golden Goose" of MLB. Long story short he is a 22 year old, 6'4" Japanese two way player who throws 102 mph (97 at ease) with multiple plus-pitches and a much better "feel" for pitching than say a "Darvish" according to scouts. Scouts think he can legitimately be a worst case No. 3 SP, with a turnout of a likely ace in a couple of years. His bat grades out as a .275 25-30 HR (with a high walk rate) type bat if he played DH on days he didn't pitch (Granderson-esque). Not to mention, he also has above-average speed (60 on the 20-80 scouting scale). Dude is an anomaly.

From Scout C: “He’s a freak of nature. His running ability, his raw power, his arm. He has everything. This guy … it’s unbelievable what he can do and what he’s capable of doing. For me, he’s a once-in-a-lifetime type player.”

He'll probably aim for AL teams for the ability to play both ways. It was originally thought he'd get $250-300 million, but he falls under the new CBA rules that limit him. He could do two or three years at the $11 million-ish, and then hit FA. He apparently idolizes and loves Darvish, there is some rumblings around DFW media that he may follow Darvish at first. He will have free roam to choose his team, still remains to see if he gets posted by his Japanese team.

Wouldn't he prefer to play in the NL since he would actually be in the lineup?

He'd want to hit more often, so everything I have seen echoes the AL for the DH. Teams are reluctant to do two-way, obviously, but he is going to have huge bargaining power.

Quick clip of him pitching. He also has about 520 innings pitched on his arm. Tanaka & Darvish both had well above 1,000 by the time they came over.
