i kind of assumed its because most alpha players been playing a long while and are 'past' a lot of content. not a fabulous way to test low end changes.

They need to make sure you are of childbearing age in case anyone in the guild has aspirations to take over an existing MMO studio, because how do you run an MMO studio without breastmilk?!

Considering how few people are in the alpha, you're probably going to need some method of coordinating with people outside of the game to get anything going inside the game.

The Alpha is closed? I thought it was the same build as the public test servers and they have been running multi day tests on them rather often.

There's an alpha (formerly friends and family) server that runs all the time, except when there's an open test ongoing.
