That "just play whatever is fun, who cares if it sucks!" mindset really only works in games that are largely solo experiences. In something like Black Desert Online, where 99% of the content is solo-oriented, having a weaker or less efficient class doesn't meaningfully impact anyone else. If your class underperforms, you're mostly just affecting your own progression, so the game can get away with shitty balance.

But in a game like Monsters and Memories, which is built around group-centric gameplay, that dynamic changes completely. Your class choice doesn't just affect you, it'll directly impact the efficiency, success, and overall experience of everyone you're playing with. When players are investing significant time into forming groups, traveling, and tackling content together, they're naturally going to care about optimization to some degree. Not necessarily in a hardcore, min/max-at-all-costs way, but enough to avoid situations where someone's class choice becomes a liability.

That's where class balance becomes far more important. If certain classes are noticeably weaker, less useful, or bring less to a group, players will inevitably gravitate toward stronger options. Or worse, start excluding others. That undermines the whole "play what you enjoy" philosophy, because social pressure and group expectations take over. So while the idea of total freedom in class choice sounds great on paper, it only really works if the game's structure supports it. In a group-focused MMO, balance isn't just a "nice-to-have" it's foundational to making sure players can actually play what they want without feeling like they're holding everyone else back.

Most players are reasonable people when it comes to this. I'm fine as long as say the DPS is somewhat close. RIFT was bad for this, all these different soul builds, but most were terribly balanced and actual garbage. When the same class as you is doing 80% less damage than you, but insists on playing that style because 'fun', well, not in my group lol

I'm getting this in Pantheon now with a few RL friends. Necros can CC, my summoner can't. If Mr. Necro can't make game night, we'll punt it down the road and meet up later because you need CC in most dungeons. If I can't make it, well, enjoy being behind in levels now with your loser summoner lol.

Hmm… so much for all the nerds raging that “they don’t even care if they make money in this super niche game it’s a hobby project!”

bonus points for an actual lawyer being involved and not just a forumquest lawyer!

This said basically nothing, then says it dispelled all the popular rumors

My sides.... I can't believe Reddit is still a thing....

I mighta missed it in that Reddit thread, but where does it say nick was fired from charm imbalance issues? I don’t see it anywhere. I’ve heard rumors it was related to selling beta keys too but not sure I believe them. I think the real story is going to be far less interesting.

It’s funny you mention selling beta keys.

I was watching his stream while he was giving away keys. Left it on while working for maybe 3 hours with no luck. On a whim I subbed just to see what happened, and his next giveaway I got a key.

He died for the sins of Shawn!

I'm sure there's a little more circumstance to it

But if I was an investor I'd be pushing WoW clone cash grab and get out

Something Nick was always adamant I think on not doing

One of them said "I can't put grief in a box and sell it" at some point which I get....

But hey there's some really sick, specific stuff that ground swells into multi generational IPs - risk ahead ofc

Imagine if I sat at a bar today. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hasn't been invented. I pitch the idea to some other educated well to do escaping things. What's he gonna tell me?

"Sounds too weird, and there's plenty of cartoons already. Plus similar things have been tried and of course either failed or produced mediocre results. The idea is outdated and a bit generic."

Then what?

Well I think it would succeed even it's original form today. Maybe even be more popular. There's a difference between it's predecessors and successors however. Immersion is the secret ingredient. It was created by people who were truly interested and had a passion for what they enjoyed creating. You can't squeeze this out of a tube made in a factory. There's attention to detail present that doesn't have to be asked for. A quality of things that be left unfinished yet praised as leaving things to the imagination. Once something is engrossing or has enough of this element present, this is the natural reaction whereas something trite will simply already be found bland to the palate and not given any benefit of any doubt.

MFF assured me the forces that be would get their fingers into this. He's got a solid radar especially compared to most around here. Even if Nick was there, it's a given something like gamma slider night time woulda got pitch fork mobbed in. I guess the silver lining is his influence is always going to exist or be detected for the long haul which is the best thing that coulda happened to it. What someone like Nick probably brings is something you can't put on a burn down chart but rather has spurts then valleys, looking inconsistent. But that's a sign of something not being forced to completion and that kind of creativity being allowed is the only way you're going to cause a quester to really be excited for what's over that next sand dune because it won't be something you immediately detect as churned out slop.

I miss the Deserts of Ro.
