If you just want to play some limited and ease your way back in while accruing cards then $15 a week ftw.
I've been doing this for a few months now after a long absence from the game and have had a very enjoyable time. I look forward to it each week.

Yea, it might cost $200-300ish to have a certain Standard deck, or half way decent collection to make multiple decks from, but you don't need to spend that all at once, or even at all sometimes. See the comments about Draft above. Considering you were good at Limited before, it can be a much cheaper way to build up your collection then just buying singles.

Also, there's a couple very competitive decks right now that you can make for under $100. The Jeskai Heroic Combo deck is legit, and other then about $60 in lands that are good to have if you want to make other decks, it's all commons/uncommons really. Or, Boss Sligh, R/W heroic, or U/W heroic are all decks you can make for maybe $50-100 just buying every single card from a website.

It's all a matter of how much time you want to spend. If you play drafts (well), make decent trades and pay attention to the overall meta going on.. then magic is maybe a $20 a week hobby.

If you want to immediately buy an entire deck outright, you'll likely spend closer to $200, yes.

I always suggest to newer, but smart, players to wait for a pre-release weekend and try to keep up with the sets from that
point on. Wait a bit to get into Standard as you build up cards from Sealed and draft, plus get used to the cards in those formats so you have a good idea of the card pool at the time.

Another good tip is find the weirdos at your LGS who lose their shit for foils. Turn their obsession into your collection!

Man I feel bad when I hear people's LGS still charge $15 for draft. Haven't seen that price for it in a while now. (See $10-$12 here locally.)

But I recommend draft overall helps you get cards, give you new card knowledge and build on your skill level.
What's the payout on those drafts? LGS here is $3 credit in pool per player. Which is a little low imo but I'll take credit over pack payout all day every day. I'm also a little biased because I'm... very good at drafting and have a crazy high win % in paper.

Mono White Heroic is about $15 (ask me for a list that doesn't suck), you can upgrade it to U/W Heroic or Jeskai Heroic Combo for maybe another $15-30 if you use common lands, then you can choose to upgrade the lands for $100.

$100 is a fine investment for UW heroic, since Flooded Strands are not really ever going to go down much in price.

Don't buy the Mana Confluence, it isn't even needed.

Anyone familiar with the Magic scene in the Denver area? I'll be out there for work this coming week and debated packing a deck.

Actually, yeah, their whole little dev studio is based in Denver now. Luckily Michael Jacobs (darkest_mage on twitch) doesn't actually ever leave his house other than to go to work, so you won't have to actually interact with him at a local store.

Is Jacob a dick, or something? The closest I get to following any pro players is reading guys on SCG.

Apparently Above and Beyond Games is only a couple miles from my hotel. They've got a Modern Thursday and Standard Tuesday. May check it out.

Above and Beyond is actually my home store. It's usually a pretty good group of guys there, about half competitive. They do draft on Tuesday, Standard on Wednesday, Modern on Thursday (which is their SCG game night), and FNM has standard and modern.

There's another store right beside them (I Want More Comics) that does Standard on Monday night. And there's several other shops around town, notably Game Heroes is probably the most competitive store in the area and they do Legacy on Tuesday nights now. Black Gold down in Littleton does Modern on Tuesday I think. Basically, there's a ton of options for playing in Denver.

I'm in NJ right now for the GP and will be traveling for work through Wednesday of next week, but let me know if you plan on playing some standard on Wednesday night and I'll try to be there. Feel free to ask any questions in the meantime.
