99% of the women magic players I've seen are just there with their boyfriends and/or looking for a new nerd boyfriend. They always play tribal decks and or just play the game to kill time.

This is correct. Chicks play Elves or whatever to placate their boyfriend. I can count on one hand the number of actual, vested girl magic players I've met in my like 23 years or whatever playing the game.

And yea I don't doubt that there is a decline currently and I'd agree that it's almost entirely the fault of standard being such butt for so long.

I've come to associate the people that make such statements stupidity, frustration, poverty, or being very young and shortsighted .. given this forum I don't suspect you are 8.

How do you keep people buying boosters? You have a rotating or expanding format.

If you go for rotation, you need something to keep the cards valuable after they do, because if they don't noone will want to buy boosters at current prices anymore

If you go for an expanding format, you need can't have newer cards be too strong, since that will also result in cards going to zero value, which will ruin consumer confidence and .. crash your booster sales

Maybe you've come up with some magical model where cards go absolutely worthless yet boosters sell at prices good enough to maintain a game like MTG? They hardly have themselves, so I'd really like to hear your great plan.

There is a single whale that visits regional legacy events, and has for the past few years.

6 months ago i was hungover but decided to go and play anyway, her shrieking voice was heard from 4 tables away in a venue with over 100 people present, I ended up getting so annoyed I dropped after that round and went home to enjoy the rest of my day.

I can't remember a single person being remotely as annoying and I've played since the late 90s. Fucking shrieking whale.

There’s one other chick I see regularly at EDH nights and she always seems bored as fuck and plays hearthstone on her phone at the same time. It’s fucking annoying as hell.

Also fuck everyone playing elf tribal. I don’t know if it’s just the people at my store, but every fucker that plays it takes 15 minutes for their fucking turn.


As for card art worries, we need more cards like City of Ass, but given today’s climate I doubt we’ll see it’s like again. Makes me sad.

I can really only say I was heavily into playing in RL events for 3 relatively short stints over the entire lifetime of the game. Even then, I've played very few qualifying events, maybe 3 PTQs and 1 regionals (back when regionals was like 300+ people, played Replenish combo, worst MTG experience of my life.) Never been registered to play in a GP and only even visited one twice to sell some old cards. If it wasn't for MTGO I would have probably abandoned the game completely.

I've played a lot of prereleases, drafts and FNMs but that's about it. And MTG is my favorite game of any kind of all time, by a large margin. I could say its the community that discourages me from playing more, but it's mostly that I'm a hobbit that's afraid to leave my house.

PS: As far as black people, in the Northeast I've seen more black people playing magic than I normally see black people in general, which, living in Southern RI, is basically never.

Black folks do play magic but not nearly as much as Yu-Gi-Oh where they steal Rob and cheat from each other dairy.

Also Hobbit as in antisocial or like are really tiny? Is that why you don't play live events? I fucking hate magic online I think it's the worst piece of software ever made. But I also hate shitty game shops and even shittier smelly magic players.

This. If MaRo wants to attract women, he's going to have to start by mandating forced hygiene and delousings as these mongoloids enter game shops. It'll have to look like a prison check in.

And then he'll have to replace 99% of the male player base with male models. And dumb the mechanics down so far it'll make eating glue look like a competitive art sport.

Who am I kidding, women don't give a shit about social games that don't involve alcohol and gossip and belittling each other while spending someone else's money on ephemeral things.

Magic seems bigger than ever in Dallas/Fort Worth area. There's 50 something stores in the area now, and all the ones I've been to have 40-80 person FNMs (split up between Standard, Modern, Draft).

I can remember even 5-6 years ago there being maybe 10 stores in the Metroplex worth going to.

It's funny to laugh about but that really is why so many people shit on "nerd culture" for a girl it's just another place/hobby for them to get into.

Some of these nerds have no place else to go and are even shunned by other nerds. Once they get kicked out they go full on incel serial killer.

Weird - not touched in person MTG since coming to Florida - but last I saw it happening up at my old store in MD they were super embracing of women at that one. (Of course they were some lookers too)

I've yet to run into any kind of misogynist type shit any time I've gone to play on Saturdays at my LGS. Plenty of dicks sure, but that's just general aspie dickdom and there really isn't shit you can do to get rid of that. I do really wish they'd cut out with trying all the inclusive BS, though. Companies need to get it through their heads that there's just some shit girls aren't going to be into and trying to lure them in is a losing proposition. The ones that want to play will come on their own.

And that's on TOP of all the positive social press they either get for being inclusive or the drying up of the negative.

Not sure how following the money is hard to grasp. Even discounting the negative general public press (or even counting it as a minor positive in a HURDUR SJWs R Crying! way), limited consumer bases are never good for long term company health. People get older, RL happens, and in dribs and drabs they quit spending. Clearly the new crop of youngins have different sensibilities than the older/original generation; AND the company's now competing in a crowded field rather than being the only game in town.

Adapt or die. Person or corporation; last, this, or next generation; is has always applied*

*Barring the companies playing the grow till I can get bought out game, or the ones whose only growth comes from buying and stripmining other companies.

It doesn't fucking exist. Stop being blind to basic biology and neurology. Marvel is fucking tanking their comics divisions right now by trying to "crack the code" and has realized the error of their ways.

Following the money is fucking comical from a bunch of thirsty beta and gamma males in charge of a company. They're trying to cuttlefish their way into vaginas they can't get. So they try to answer the loud horking seals on twitter, all 10 of them and their equally subservient horking male allies who are signal boosting, and proceed to lose 50% of their existing player base silently because they couldn't be fucked to even try to tell them to "fuck off with this nonsense, you're ruining your brand."

And then months later, "What happened? We just wanted to get rid of all the evil mysognists who were preventing the millions of nise ladeis from playing?!2131"

Because when you try to let a company know that they're being run by fucking morons and trying to target a market that doesn't actually exist, you get called a nazi and ostracized. So having a valid viewpoint based on facts instead of feels just gets you shit on the by the people you're paying money to and investing your spare time with. Awesome way to get paid back as a loyal consumer.

It's a good joke but it's also true, because the smell at larger events was actually a large reason when I stopped playing any events larger than like 20 people, back in 2001 or 2002 (whenever Invasion was in Standard) and had quit completely by the middle of Odyssey block, to spend more Friday nights playing D&D with my relatively hygienic friends.

Life had it's ultimate karma though, because the NOC I work in now has that same exact smell (fat nerd stress in a large, windowless converted-warehouse, just like old-time MTG events) all the fucking time.

The only tour I ever attended in San Diego, way back when during Urza's Saga was pretty bad for that. And the random comic cons I've had the displeasure of being in major cities while they were happening (San Jose, San Francisco) only further cemented my desire to never attend a "con" of any kind that was nerd focused.

I was buying some singles at my local shop and one of the "regulars" walked by me to look at dice and I wanted to gag. He also then got a couple of dice out to buy and couldn't afford the astronomical $1.75 total they wanted to charge him for them.

If MaRo wants to get women into game shops playing cards, he's going to have to drug them against their wills. Has he ever played in a card shop?

I mean, we've got about a twenty to thirty women playing magic locally, but it's the middle of nowhere midwest, so they don't exactly have thrilling other life options available.

80% of the population around here is the same rolly polly amiable//passive-aggressive fat white person regardless of gender or activity.

City of 450k people has 13 (plus random ephemeral stoner shops that open and close constantly) active CCG/Boardgame/Wargaming/D&D shops, because there's enough boredom to go around for everyone~
