The problem with most formats is that there’s like a billion cards that they never planned future interactions for, so most of them are literally 2-3 turn games if played competitively. You have to find a group of people that willingly don’t abuse combos to play with to get anything like what you remember. Commander has brackets which sort of help, you all build for a certain bracket but even that is far from perfect. Standard at least tries to maintain balance, but with so many sets so fast it runs into some of the same 2-3 turn game problems. Commander adds new cards every set yea, but for the most part if you’ve built a deck usually at most there’s a couple of cards you want to grab which makes it reasonably cheap to upkeep, at least after the initial build. Very few new set cards in their standard art go for more than like $20Used to play magic (mono blck standard) back in like 1999-2004 a lot. Started getting back into it this week by playing maybe 4-5 hours of Arena on my computer. Haven’t bought/built a new mono green deck yet but am gonna play commander with some friends soon.
tbh, I prefer standard over commander but my friends all play commander so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and I’m borrowing one of their decks.
I watched a “why I quit magic” video today just to quality control myself, and I realized that… magic isn’t exclusively magic anymore. There’s all these other anime and comic book stuff in it.
are there any game formats that exclude expanded universe / universe beyond / multiverse shit?
I’d prefer to play standard but with a game format that doesn’t expire cards. I think pioneer does that? The only thing appealing about Commander to me is that the cards don’t expire when a new set comes out. That just makes the game hella wasteful and seem like a subscription rather than a fun card game. I think “pioneer” avoids this rotation.
Thanks for the breakdown. The problem with most formats is that there’s like a billion cards that they never planned future interactions for, so most of them are literally 2-3 turn games if played competitively. The comic book shit you are talking about is Universe Beyond sets, which don’t bother me much but a good amount of people don’t like. I think some of them fit at least reasonably well with magic, like Final Fantasy, and some are retarded (like SpongeBob or Furby from Secret Lairs). Spiderman was the second most recent and by all metrics seems to have failed massively. Avatar the last airbender is the newest and it’s still yet to be seen as to how it does. Final fantasy probably made them more than enough to make up for those though.
I was thinking it would be cool to play and limit cards to a certain set, like you can play any card ice age or earlier.
Anymore I just collect, but the market is kinda retarded now and any of the interesting secret lairs are sold out instantly. I literally can’t sit in an online queue on Monday mornings, seeing as I actually have a job unlike most people apparently.
Turns out one of my buddies has 2 decks, and another (who he doesnt know), has 7 decks. And we're all going to get together to play at my house in a week. I mean, I like the standard gameplay format, but it just seems like a lot to keep up with.Sounds like the move is just to play your friend’s commander decks when y’all play and not invest yourself if you don’t like the setting or direction. I’ve got three buddies who all love building decks. These guys have 30-40 decks each so I just roll a die and select randomly and hope for the best. Can still have fun with friends without chasing the next thing.
When treasures made their debut I realized I just don’t have the drive to try and keep up, so bounced early and only built a few commander decks. Blue Black tribal ninjas is my best deck and it’s annoying but mostly outclassed at this point.
It's really jarring to be playing a green mono spider deck and then have to face off against . . . Optimus Prime and Spongebob combo deck. How it is now with all these franchises all mashed up together just feels like Magic itself doesn’t really exist anymore to me and kind of helped push me to not want to play anymore.
