Mostly because maynard has been phoning it in since about 2001.

I saw perfect circle before their big hiatus and after and they were the exact same fucking setlists. Come to think of it, 3 of the 4 worst concerts I've ever been to have had maynard involved.

And yes - seeing bands past their prime completely ruins them. I saw Megadeth for the last time in like 2013 with Amon Amarth and they were old and slow then. Every song was down tuned for Dave's voice and was a half step slow. Why the fuck would I want to see them a decade later?

So happy I skipped out on what became the last Type O Negative tour. I don't have to have a memory of Pete reading the fucking lyrics off while not playing bass. Super happy I never saw Slayer post-Jeff.
Slayer live was fucking amazing. Didn't think it would be good since I didn't really care for Slayer but man that was a fantastic show. Ended up seeing them twice right before they "retired". Megadeth I'm sure will be disappointing but when I saw Iron Maiden in 2016 they were still fucking awesome.

A lot of this stuff just comes down to the venue. I caught Tool at Aftershock in 2019, right after Fear Inoculum dropped. They debuted the live performance of both the title track and "Pneuma", and it was unreal. Perfect sound, insane light show, the whole nine yards. Absolutely phenomenal.

On the flip side, I saw Chevelle in Portland back in 2017, and it remains one of the best live shows I've ever experienced. I wouldn't even call them a top-tier favorite of mine, but that night they were absurdly good. Then I saw them again at Aftershock in 2018 and they sounded like straight garbage.

It really does come down to acoustics, mixing, staging, and all the behind-the-scenes stuff. A great band can sound god-tier or like a garage rehearsal depending entirely on the venue.

I'm not talking about sound. I'm talking about energy and ability. I understand garbage sound. I've been in plenty of venues that have shit sound. But if you're phoning it in or you just don't have it anymore, or are fucked up on drugs/booze/whatever, it's pretty easy to tell

I saw NIN at Lollapalooza in 2013, which was pretty fun. I bought a 3 day pass just for that show, but I ended up going back on Saturday and Sunday. The sound was ok, but it was nice singing along with the crowd. Next, I liked Smashing Punpkins at MSG in 2018. The show was a spectacle in the best sense. They played for like 3 straight hours. Then in 2022, I saw Asian Kung-fu Generation at Hibiya Yagai Ongakudou. It felt like a very formal setting with assigned seating (most likely to compliment where they are in their careers). Still a solid show, where they played all their greatest hits. Honorary mention: Saw the Queers at Reggies in Chicago in 2009. That was hands down one of the most fun show's I've ever been to.

Some bands I wish I could have seen:
Metallica, Tool/Perfect Circle, AC/DC, Glass Animal, Warrant, Guns N Roses, PM Dawn, Michael Jackson, Muse, System of the Down, Portishead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Danzig, Rammstein, Iron & Wine, Ellegarden...

Thread necro (surprisingly). Going to see Iron Maiden next year in San Antonio. Didn't think I'd get to see them again (last was in 2016) but when my bud brought up traveling to see them it was a no brainer. Got a friend that lives out in New Braunfels too so can knock out visiting him which will be fun. Think Megadeth is opening for them.
I saw them in Chicago in 2023 and it was a great show. They are coming back next year and the set list looks amazing so might see them again. The only guy who seemed to phone it in was Janick Gers. He just stood around most of the time and played his guitar vertically which I guess he thought looked cool. Bruce and especially Steve Harris run back and forth like maniacs the entire show.

Fair enough. I saw Marilyn Manson in 2018 and it was obvious he was fucked up as shit on stage. I did enjoy somebody from the crowd yelling, "YOU LOOK LIKE YOU FUCKED A BIRTHDAY CAKE!!" because Manson's makeup was all fucked up.

Peter Steele of Type O Negative was really into cocaine and everything else. The whole Life is Killing Me and Dead Again albums are about his entire addiction problem and it got to the point where he was so fucked up he could not stand and play bass and was reading the fucking lyrics to the songs on their last tour. A real low point for sure. There's videos on youtube, it's pretty hard to watch. I skipped that tour because I heard that's what was going on and didn't want to see that shit. Then he got clean, changed his life around, was looking good and feeling great, and they were going back into the studio to write another album and he just up and died in his sleep one day. I felt shitty for a long time that I missed their last ever tour, after seeing them literally every year from 99-2009 or whatever it was, but the older I get and the more bands I see decline, the happier I am that my only memories of Type O are of them being absolute monsters on stage and crushing it every night.

I miss that fuckin band.
