I saw this today and it seems like a viable plan.... I figure some parts of this will end up weaseling their way into reality.

That would be somewhat disappointing, although I think it's very possible that's what will happen, or in that realm. Retaining Granlund is cool, but that roster is almost identical to the one that just got rolled. I'd like to see a bigger shake up.

I think what we've seen through the regular season and playoffs now is that the talent exists within the players. I think the shake up might need to be on the coaching staff. Maybe HC, maybe not, but if not, then he needs to retool his coaching staff under him and find a way to get players closer to optimal output. Stop seeing streaks and flashes, especially in your big bet players like the first two lines. If you can't be a consistent value delivery , then either you shouldn't be making so much money, you shouldn't be on the first two lines, or you shouldn't be on the team.

Hoping for a guy who scored 49 points in 80 games to come back at league min + bonuses is some delusional thinking. That's the kind of thing that would lead to the league + PA getting involved.

I mean wasn't league min but Berg signed a 2m contract for the Bruins historic 22 season which is insane for a player of that caliber.

It's figuring to play on the "He wants to retire a Star" angle, the "home town discount" bit, all that. Plus if you've watched him this year you can tell the wheels just aren't there like they used to be and he knows it. He's ending up behind plays.. a LOT. Which is causing him to take more penalties than he has historically. While at the same time he's not the feared enforcer he once was. OTOH, within the Stars organization there's a reason they all but chant "Captain, my captain" when he comes into the room, he means that much.

The question will come down to two sides...
  • Has he been smart with his money, does he want to do this gracefully and probably end up with a statue outside the AAC.
  • Does his Athletic Ego insist he still has some last all star year(s) in the tank, and/or he wasn't smart with his money and needs a big payday. Which would lead to.... Is he OK being yet another old dude who went to the NHL retirement home for his last couple years (i.e. become a Red Wing).

Damnit.. now my brain made me go look things up... This looks like the best assessment I can find so far, which puts him at #19 on the top free agents list...

#19 Jamie Benn (Dallas) - Benn's massive 8 year/ 76 million dollar contract finally comes to an end this summer. Overall, this contract aged really well. From when this contract started in 2017, Benn has only missed 10 games in 8 years! His average points per season over that span is 59 points per 82 games played. I think that's excellent output from the 35 year old Canadian.
The question now is.... will he actually leave Dallas this summer, or will GM Nill bring him back for a couple more years? With just 5 million dollars in cap space for the 2025-26 season, there's no way Dallas can offer Benn the best contract he can get. Now anything can happen before July 1st for the Stars to make more cap space. Seguin could be shipped out or Dumba could be bought out, but with other big name Stars entering free agency, the older Benn could be the odd man out if he won't take a well below market value contract.
I see Benn signing a 2 year deal worth 2.75 million a year in Dallas. If he does go to free agency, he could get a 3 year deal worth at least 5.5 million a year. Teams that will be eager to bring in the Stars Captain are: #1 Vancouver #2 Utah #3 Chicago #4 Anaheim #5 Washington

So another factor would end up being "Stars can offer you half what you can make on the market, but what are your odds on getting a sniff at another cup run with those 5 teams? Caveat being that with Washington you would be playing with Ovechkin on his retirement tour season"

That's about a 100% difference in contract value. Was a 5 mil contract, 2.5 in salary(a signing bonus included there but thats getting into the weeds) and maxed out bonuses.

Expectations for Dallas will probably need to be tempered for next season. They dont have a 1st round pick the next 2 seasons and only 4m in cap space or so.

IMO they should fire Pete for blaming Otter for the series loss when the team scored 2 goals in a 3 game span. I cant recall a coach with this type of mentality and a lack of accountability ever being able to lead a group of men to a championship.
