Despite my earlier complaints I did end up finishing the game and ended up enjoying the rest of it once I learned I could skip all the cut scenes and just go back at the end of the game and watch them in the casino (seriously the amount of cut scenes and dialogue coupled with the "This is EXACTLY what you need to do" quest text almost ruined this game for me).

For anyone who is interested on how to keep your other party members alive easily in boss fights here is a tip, don't read it if you don't want to trivialize the entirety of the game.

Get two Boneheads, get two Ullaballoons (in Old Smoky), if you get tired of trying to get Ullaballoons monoliths are a decent second choice. Keep one of each on Esther and Swaine, Oliver is fine with his mite and thimblelemur until he can get a plessie/dinoceros. Once you get All Out Defense Esther and Swaine will auto switch to the ullaballoon/monolith and hit their defend ability when you use the command, and then switch back to the bonehead when you use All Out Attack. This makes it really easy to get golden glims and also keeps both of them alive during boss fights with no issues and since they are both alive they can do damage which makes the boss fights go WAY faster.

Once you get the ship and are high enough level (probably somewhere around level 26-28 can't remember right now, go to No Longer Mine island and use the gateway trick to tame Lumberwoods. At that point pretty much nothing can kill Esther or Swaine.

Of course, once you get Tengri you can just tame 3 Dinoceros and if you already got 3 Lumberwoods.... well... nothing will ever kill any of them again AND you will destroy everything you fight.

I finished this game in the past few days and yeah the handholding was very annoying. My main complaints were those unnecessary dialogues "Eh Oliver there's an ice stalagmite blocking the path, maybe you should find a spell that could help us do something with this ICE. You know, like maybe a hot spell, that does hot things, that could help use make a way through this cold ice thing". Fuck you I could tell that before you started talking asshole. Half the time you can't even use the spell right away you need to go into the dialogue which then opens the spell menu to use the correct spell. This gets into my 2nd issue, the fucking heart quests. Why are there so many of them and why are they so fucking retarded. Everytime you unlock a new heart piece, you go into every town and there is ALWAYS one to two heart quests where the heart giver is right next to the fucking NPC, what is the fucking point of these. Adjust stamp costs/stamp gains and remove ALL of these useless one. Keep a few where you have to grab a heart in a new town and go back to an older one to complete it. And then you have to talk to the heart giver, then use the spell, then talk to the quest giver, accept the quest, talk to him against, then use the spell. This was dumb as shit.

Final main complaint is the combat and the AI. Combat actually sounded pretty cool when I started, you're alone, you have a pet that can defend, you have to cancel your attack into defend, nice it's like action combat stuff I like it. The more you progress the shittier the system is because you get the other characters and you have very little control on them.

Why are there pets which can't defend when you don't have time to swap to your char and defend with him most of the time? Even when you do, why is it you need to use your main char stats to do so? Why can't the other guys do just that, they never defend even with all out defense unless they have defend on their fucking pets? I put the girl on healing duty but she'd rather spend her mana spamming random shit when people are low instead of healing, then when she goes into healing she'd rather unsummoner and not resummon a pet that can heal and instead stay in combat herself throwing all her fucking useless buffs around and trying to hit mobs with her 1dmg harp? Like what the fuck I specifically gave her a pet that has like twice her magic attack and aoe heals but she never uses it. Or sometimes she'll take a pet out for no fucking specific reason? I have 2 melee pets and one caster, she's on "do not use abilities", she summons the caster instead of the other melee? Like once every 100times or so, why?

Why do pets walk away from the target when they're "attacking" inbetween hits what the fuck is up with that? It's especially obvious when you play a 2star speed pet, like you hit once, then it sometimes walks away from the mob, then near the end of the attack you can attack again but since it's not in melee range it starts walking toward the target and fails to attack again. Yet other times, it'll fucking punch the shit out of the mob 4times in a row. And my other chars pets do that shit too, sometimes I'd notice one of the pets on another char didn't do a single fucking thing the entire fucking fight, just stood at max range, walked closer then back. Also I like that when you click attack, almost every pets invariably start their first attack TOO FAR from the mob you attacked and miss their first attack. Literally happens 80% of the time on 80% of the pets I used, unless I manually moved into melee range before attacking.

Luckily with the very strong powerleveling options, I just ignored most of that shit and crushed the game with overleveled OP pets. But really the combat is pretty terrible unless you setup your group exactly like intended to work around the quirks like Khane described.

Story was alright, I think they could have done some changes to
make the white witch more important earlier in the game than before you beat shadar
but overall I liked it, not the best but definitely pretty good imo, at least with the setting and such. Music was insanely good and graphics were superb so artistically definitely what I expected. Pet evolution/capture and shit was pretty fun too.

Stuff I agree with
The funny thing is, this game is actually far more enjoyable a second time through because you know exactly how the combat system works and how to get around all the stupidity of the AI (for the most part) and pet collision (back out with Oliver's familiar and let the other two attack first, or just put one high damage AE spell on their trick list and leave all other trick slots empty until a boss fight, etc)

Oh and abusing the Platoon AI in the casino to get countless sage's secrets and crownberries/big babanas, etc. You can get 800,000 chips every few minutes.

Picked this up last week and for the life of me I don't know how I didn't know about this gem of a game. One of my top 5 PS3 title ever.

Ended up dl'ing this from psn after reading the comments in The Last Of Us thread and what a game so far, only 6 hours in and the attention to detail is amazing. A+ game so far.

I've still not completed this game. I just ended up losing interest as the combat is an awful combination of realtime action and turn based, with unresponsive commands, characters running against invisible walls, and retarded AI. The quests to give some random person in the world someone else's mojo were utterly pointless also. I liked the storyline, but the combat just irritated me.

Get the uber dragon guy, power level him, instant-kill everything and enjoy the story.

Is that the Dinoceros right? Is the idea to get one for each of your characters? Or just the main character?

You could get one for each, but you really only need the one. Personally I'd get two for Oliver and evolve it down both paths. Also, it's worth level capping it each time before evolving. They have low level caps and are slow to level, but have huge growths and it's worth it to min-max these.

It's better to throw support type stuff on your other party members, imo. A dino can take care of most shit on its own really and say for a boss or something if you run out of the stamina gauge thing you can just swap in your other one.

Finally got Ni NoKunifrom Amazon for $20. Should arrive in a few days....and my PS3 got the YLOD today...figures. It's about 5 years old now (fat 40gb model). I'm not even going to bother sending it in for repair, and I doubt I can take it apart and fix it in a way that would make it reliable long term. Guess I'll go try and find a cheap slim bundle.

Anyone have any luck with the hairdryer method for fixing the ylod? Seems like an extremely temp fix but who knows.

Excited to play Ni NoKuni, but is the game good enough to warrant purchasing another ps3? (currently the only ps3 game I'd play before GTAV release)

Haven't used a hair dryer, but I've used a heat gun several times on my 60GB (gen 1). I think I've reached the end of the road with it, though, because it artifacts a bit now and that's probably a signal that something got damaged last time I repaired the YLOD.

That said, NnK is a great game. I don't know if I'd spend ~$150 on a new PS3 just to play it, but I wouldn't reject the idea out of hand either.
