I'm trying to think of the last time being a super early adopter actually paid off when it comes to consoles. Maybe PS2? Perhaps Gamecube? It certainly hasn't been any of the other consoles/handhelds since.

Oh wait, PS3 with the built in backwards compatibility that they engineered out after the initial release. That's the last time being an early adopter was actually beneficial, I think.
man i remember my ps2 pre-order was $10, but in order to "buy" the system i had to also buy 3 launch games
tekkan tag
armored core
the summoner

is what i got

in hindsight walking around nyc w/ a huge ps2 logo bag was really stupid

Yeah the first run PS3 that can also play PS2 was something I really wanted and just missed getting. To this day it still bugs me because I've got a PS2 taking up shelf space and it's a bit of an eyesore.

I'd agree that was the last time being an early adopter made a whole lot of sense, outside of FOMO from some mega-game close to launch (BOTW is all that really comes to mind).

Carrying a new system down the street is such a "back when I was idealistic and thought the world was a friendly place" relic of a memory. I can't remember the last time I did that. Just going from Best Buy to my car with the Switch 2, I was making jokes about how we were all going to get mugged.

Armored Core 2 is absolutely what I would have gotten with the PS2 in the alternate universe where I got a launch PS2. Got one about two years later for Final Fantasy X and had to carry it home in a backpack during a rainstorm that rolled in on the walk over to the store. Was a big fan of the first Armored Core on PS1 and then completely fell off with the series until AC6, but in some alternate universe it's what I got with the PS2 and I stayed a big AC fan for years.

I think when I purchased my PS2 on launch day it required only one game; Software Etc in Redding, CA. Went with Tekken Tag and it was objectively the superior choice at the time I think haha.

Yeah; I think the whole bundle was 1 game, two controllers, and two memory cards. For like 400? It was like their only pre-order deal. Or maybe more. Honestly it's been a long ass time; can't remember haha.

But really, if I could decide the direction of the Zelda franchise as a whole, I'd prefer they went back to the roots of Zelda, even if they make some remasters/remakes of old games to make some money, I'd really love a remake of A Link to the Past similar to what they did for Link's Awakening, or even a HD port of Link Between Worlds that was only on 3DS, on Switch 1/2. I think they also would make a TON of money from a strong full remake of Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask, and I am probably in the minority but I'd buy the shit out of a Zelda 2 remake, in 2D with 3D graphics like they did for Metroid 2 (Samus Returns) on 3DS. I prefer to play "smaller" Zelda games, they can be open a bit (like Ocarina/Majora were) but have clear direction and to-the-point, not endless aimless wandering because you can climb everything, run everywhere, fly and such.. it's not how I prefer my Zelda. I like dungeons and bosses and classic items.

Things Nintendo should be doing:

Zelda
-Ocarina of Time full top-down 4K visual remake (Demon Souls style)
-Zelda 1 HD2D Remake
-Zelda 2 HD2D Remake
-Link to the Past HD2D Remake
-Phantom Hourglass + Spirit Tracks HD remaster dual-pack with normal controls
-Link Between Worlds Remastered
-Majora's Mask Remastered

Mario
-Super Mario 64 full top-down 4K visual remake
-Mario 3D All-Stars II (Mario Galaxy 2, Mario 3D Land, both in HD to mainly fix the latter's resolution)

Metroid
-Metroid Prime 2 Remastered
-Metroid Prime 3 Remastered
-Metroid Fusion Remake in the style of Dread

Leave Super Metroid alone, it's perfection and needs to have the exact physics and mechanics that it has now in order to continue to be what it is.
