Forgot where I read it but just remember it being the 3d mario team, but feels more like odyssey but but fleshed out a bit more. I'm on the first real level and got almost all the bananas and it hasn't felt like a chore yet. Think it was 45 or so bananas. And each banana helps unlock a skill point.

Feels good overall and think I'll enjoy the whole game.

Saw the videodunkey youtube on his reaction and I felt similar, but only watched 5 min so I can do it myself.

DK just arrived in the mail finally, going to plow through it in the near future. They need to give us a release date on Metroid Prime 4 because I've got a feeling this one isn't really gonna tide people over for too long.

How does DKB compared to AstroBot? AstroBot is the most Nintendo-like game I've played on the PS5.

I've only played a little bit of DKB, but I'd say Astro Bot is waaaay better. It's basically a perfect Mario game and feels very focused at all times. DKB on the other hand feels kind of unfocused, there's too much going on, and running around smashing everything gets old quick (for me anyway).

Would have definitely preferred a more standard DKC game with incredible music and maybe even 2D (or 2.5D) levels, like a Tropical Freeze sequel.

i was hooked 5 mins into Astro bot, i've played DKB for an hour or so and get bored within a few mins. Not really the same at all imo, its a fun game but its more linear and minor progression whereas Astro bot felt like I was seeing new crazy cool shit every hour.

Visually its no comparison at all, Astro bot is a ferarri and DKB is a toyota camry

end of the day DKB is a kids game that adults can sort of enjoy whereas Astrobot is a technical marvel. DKB does support local coop play (i dont think astro bot does) so if you have kids around that is really the fun part. i'm basically waiting to play DKB until my grand kids visit next month

Playing DKB for real now. I was hoping it'd be more like Mario Odyssey, but instead it feels unfocused/chaotic. So far I don't like it that much. Not sure if I'm actually going to finish the game, and it might be destined for Ebay unless there's a specific area where it clicks and gets good.

Also, did they seriously include "a young Pauline" (the hero here is the original DK) and then immediately say it's "a different Pauline from the one in the old games"? The fuck is the point of even saying that, or naming the character that? Nintendo might be the worst game company on Earth at continuity. No wonder they're getting ready to put out the fourth Metroid game of a sub-series "that takes place between Metroid 1 and 2" as we speak.

getting more into donkey kong bananza as well after 5-6 hours, I'm on level 300 (or ... level 3 lol) out of i think 14 or so total. I still get bored fairly fast and I don't think the game is comparable at all to Astro Bot which I found insanely fun and varied, DKB's mechanics are just meh in comparison but the world destruction stuff is the fun part. It is really cool being able to pulverize pretty much everything in a level.

boss fights are still weird in this game, there is more time spent in the boss fight cut scene than you spend actually fighting a boss.

anyways new nintendo direct tomorrow, the new pokemon game also looks really good and apparently uses a lot of xenoblade mechanics. i've never played a pokemon game and have had zero interest but picking this one up

Their pro controller is already overpriced for what it is, and there is no excuse for a price hike on old Switch 1 hardware this late especially considering how dated it is.

This just shows off how awful the gaming industry has become. In the past old gen hardware would become well discounted and easily affordable.

Yeah, when I was a kid in 1993, you could get a SNES for $199 (probably around 400 current dollars if adjusted for inflation) and you could get a new-model NES at any store for $50. Fifty! They were still making games for it, too. Last-gen systems plummeted in price quickly. I got a Sega Genesis in 1999 for like $20.

In 1993, not only could you get an NES for $50 brand new with the new model improvements, but you could get all of the top games for it for under $10 a piece, brand new. I really wanted an NES + Metroid + Super Mario Bros 3, but I ended up spending that 70 bucks on Super Metroid instead, which was 100% the right call.

I gave up on DK Bananza after like 2 hours, I was somewhere on level 200. Game just wasn't interesting, hardly the "killer app" you'd expect from a Nintendo launch lineup. Instead I played DKC Returns again for the first time since it came out in 2010. That game is still as good as you remember. (Note: Nintendo is charging $60 for the Switch port of it LOL)

Yup I remember always picking up a late model of every console from pretty much the PS1 through the PS3. PS4 One era is when that all changed. I just stopped seeing the point and they got totally replaced by their successors when it comes to compatibility and performance. Like it made sense for me to buy a late model PS1, 2, and 3 because they could all play games right off the disc, they had their own thing going for them and were well discounted compared to launch prices. The PS One had that cool LDC screen attachment, the PS2 Slim is just the GOAT classic disc console, PS3 super slim had top loader reliability and ran quiet. PS4 however, it's like I could never justify a PS4 Pro as it never really got discounted and the PS5 made it redundant anyways. I got a One X and One S though, only because Xbox backwards compatibility was so great and I liked their HDMI passthrough (a feature I would wish became a standard).

Going from Switch to Switch 2 however feels like less of a straight forward improvement. Compatibility is hit or miss, and some games look a lot better while some might run worse. Seems like a lot of people might as well just stick with the old hardware for a while unless they got the money to spend.

Kids really wanted a switch 2 with Mario kart. I really didn't care, but no way I was gonna spend a retarded $500. So I made a deal with them and we went halfsies. I could stomach $250 and they feel a sense of ownership with it. Mario Kart does look nice, but man what a boner killer of a system launch title.

Also, and I know this isn't new, but wtf is up with Mario kart and kid gloves. Seriously you can't crash into walls or get completely turned around or anything. You can basically hold the gas pedal and just not steer most of the time

I'd recommend trying to go a bit further in DK Bananza honestly, I think you're missing out unless you absolutely cannot stomach it for some reason. I bought it because it's a AAA Nintendo game and I like DK well enough I guess but I'm not a huge DK fan or anything, but goddamn this game is amazing. The levels get better and better for the most part except for like a couple that are a little gimmicky but they are short, and the transformations (or bananzas) add a ton of fun to the game. The last hour alone is just epic, it's really gone from "eh this could be cool I guess" to "wow that's an amazing platformer".

You definitely feel the team that did Mario Odyssey is behind this, there's a lot of similar feel to it but with a twist thanks to all those different transformations and associated powers. A big difference with Odyssey is that you don't HAVE to collect bananas or other currencies to advance, you can actually skip all bananas almost because they're only used to get points in your skill trees but none of it is absolutely required to beat the game, it just makes it easier or makes you more powerful and durable, so you can definitely play it to 100% it like I am, or breeze through it if you just like rushing and jumping all over to get it done quickly, it's up to the player and I like that.

I really like how the game lets you handle situations in very different ways with different powers, even boss fights don't feel contrived because if you're good enough and use your powers in a smart way, you can literally beat some of them before their mechanics kick in or skip entire phases of them.

On a side note, there's also a ton of callbacks, cameos and homages to the classic DK games all the way back to the arcade classic.

There is a setting and you can turn off the assist that stops you from hitting walls.

Buying a $500 system with half your money and half your kids' money that you gave them as allowance is a fun way to just buy a $500 system yourself with extra steps. But I do applaud the parenting trick.

It was birthday/Christmas money, but this is how I feel when my wife buys me presents.
