I think Switch 2 is suffering from what has somewhat happened with ps5 and will happen with ps6. The desire to keep architecture the same to keep libraries compatible results in evolution rather than revolution. Combined when game dev cycles getting longer and longer, adopters can hold out.

Does anyone really care about backwards compatibility? For me, once I move to the next gen I don't go back and play older system games. Other than for nostalgia's sake.

Have they even announced Mario,Zelda, smash brothers, or animal crossing.
How do you not have a road map of your most popular games?

has Mario kart received any DLC? What are they releasing ?

Didn't they just release some Pokemon version of Animal Crossing?

Backwards compatibility matters because most of the new games are shit. The 2 or 3 good originals is not enough.

Games with spoilers or ones that will be replayed/continued over years are the only FOMO. Switch 2 doesn't have those yet so there is no advantage to being an early adopter (like so many other industries). Hell join some giveaways and try to win one for free if you can since we have time.

I care tremendously due to limited time. And I replay games I like, so it cuts down shelf space and cords.

Pokémon Pokopia is an extremely good and addicting game. If you like Animal Crossing or Pokemon, it's a must buy.

Then just play your old system.
So many games run like absolute shit or have ungodly long load times on the old system that BC matters more for Switch 2 than it ever has anywhere else.

That said, Nintendo fucked it up enough that even someone like me with a couple dozen backlogged Switch games still won't buy a Switch 2.

They released too early, too underpowered, and nothing for a killer app.

I think you're right. Architecture is being held back a little bit to accomodate old generations.

It's a bit like when a new console generation comes out and most of the first year of games are cross-platform with the previous gen. That always frustrated the hell out of me. It was especially bad in 2014 with most of the PS4 games also having a PS3 version, which I thought meant the PS4 versions were being held back. Going back and playing those year-one cross-platform PS4 games now, I think I was right. Assassin's Creed 4 is a good example, it looks pretty low-res for a PS4 game now.

I care about it because it frees up shelf space, lets me get rid of old systems. The main systems I keep room for now are PS5, PS3, and Switch 2, which also covers PS4, PS1, Switch 1. Kinda sucks that I have to drag a PS2 out of the mothballs to play a PS2 game.

What would really be nice is if PS6 would throw in PS2 emulation on top of 4/5/6 since PS2 has been so ignored. At that point we'd only need a PS3 to cover PS3 and 1. If it's a big bump to costs, then maybe relegate the PS2 BC to a special edition PS6 and throw PS1 and 3 on there too.

They could do a standard PS6 for $600 and the Special Historical Model PS6 (includes BC for PS1/2/3) for $900. I'd grab the latter. It'd probably be a rare and valuable item, like the early PS3 model that could run both PS1 and PS2 games.

Well, truthfully, consoles today are just PC components. So I guess backwards compatibility is mostly a non issue. It's not like the old days where they would have custom ASICs.

As long as they design with forward advances in mind then backwards compatibility has meaning. But if you are stuck on Switch1 load speeds and bottlenecks for all of time even with faster memory cards and better hardware then it's simply piggybacking. Eventually that it turns into "wait for the remake and buy it again for the better version" which is bullshit when it's only one gen back.
