On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te'o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

Not buying that bullshit.
^^ What a load of shit. So she was his girlfriend for a year and he never fucking met her in person? Yeah fucking right. There's a lot more going on than this, sounds like his shit got found out in December and they gave some BS story to the school in a panic.
Yeah that press release is 100% bullshit.2010-2011: Te'o and Kekua are friends. "She was gifted in music, multi-lingual, had dreams grounded in reality and the talent to catch up to them" (South Bend Tribune). "They started out as just friends," Te'o's father, Brian, told the Tribune in October 2012. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there."
As a life-long Notre Dame fan, I find this truly bizarre. The University's statement really doesn't sync with what I know of his "girlfriend". As you'll read in the article, Te'o has said before that he's met her more than once in real life. Unless the perpetrators of the hoax got a girl to fill in as his "girlfriend" each time, Te'o was in on this whole thing. So so strange. It really does remind me of the Evelys thing; what started off as harmlessly pretending to be a girl turned into an uncontrollable situation once Evelys created the site. Te'o probably never expected the "girlfriend" to gain national attention, which is exactly what happened as Notre Dame continue to win and Te'o entered the Heisman picture.
