There was 8/10/12 for 3080s, this would actually be cutting that down to only two.
There was no 8GB 3080 desktop card. There were 3080 8GB laptop GPUs but those barely count, that's apples to oranges.

Why have two boards for 12/16GB mem?
Memory bandwidth + cost. GDDRX6 is pretty expensive, and if you want more bandwidth you need more chips. With the 3080 variants:

3080 10 GB -> 320 bit bus, 760 GB/s
3080 12 GB -> 384 bit bus, 912 GB/s

Huh, never actually realized the 3080 12GB had more memory bandwidth, because I just never really thought about it.

It goes even beyond that, as the GPU chip is a totally different SKU.

10 GB: 8704 cores, 1440 MHz base clock
12 GB: 8960 cores, 1260 MHz base clock

But since both versions can boost up to the same speed (1710 MHz), the performance of the 12 GB version is of course better than the 10 GB version.

However, if you can get your hands on an 3080 Ti at a similar price you should buy that, as the memory configuration of the 3080 Ti is the same as the 3080 12 GB version, but with 10240 cores. Which, of course, gives even better performance. Well, if you are still going to buy a new card at the moment.

From a technical standpoint, the 3080 12 GB makes no sense, as it has the same layout and production costs as the 3080 Ti, except maybe the die yields. Which should be under control by now. It's just there to create an artificial performance step between the $699 MSRP 10 GB, and the 3080 Ti with $1199 MSRP.

tl;dr: The 3080 Ti is not worth more than $799.

official 4090 announcement 9/20, usually nvidia has shipped the SKUs a month or so later which lines up with a mid Oct release date rumor from summer

first unconfirmed leak of a 4090 benchmark

it shows a timespy extreme score of 20,192 for a 4090 at 450W TDP, by comparison a 3080 FE is ~9k, a 3090 FE is ~12k, and a 3090 ti is ~14k. It would only improve and get cooler with software tweaks and improved cooling, so seems impressive

nvidia's official release with all info will be in 3 days, 9/20 at 11am EDT

if they have been stockpiling inventory it might be not too hard to buy a 4080, since all the "spare no expense" gamers will buy up all the 4090s in the initial wave

If those #s are even close to true, I’d expect 3090s to hit $600 soon as the 4070 will be it’s equal. We’ll see, but I’m just as if not more interested in new AMD cards, power draw big factor in new tech purchases going forward.

I think that will depend on where they set the MSRP. I could easily see a $100-200 increase over last gen.

Has there ever been a leap this huge?

It will be interesting to see how the prices change after amd launches the 7000 series. AMDs bill of material is expected to be much lower and the performance difference may not be that much. AMD could try to take market share and it could be a major hit to Nvidia's bottom line, or they could just price them a bit lower and reap in the profits.

I'm not upgrading til I see how this plays out.

Ah yes, the hyper-inflated covid supply issue prices are just the new "normal" prices.

Fucking save us AMD, or hell Intel at this point, literally anyone do anything so Nvidia has to stop behaving like robber-barons.

quite a sticker shock although i guess not really, 3090 ti launched at $1999 so $1600 is actually technically cheaper especially if its way faster.

They are just missing that $400-500 tier that people are used to as a normie gamer, they are just squeezing people for money kinda sad. I'm sure in 8-10 months they'll put out the 4060s and 4070s that will probably be faster than 3090s but sucks for people now that you have to choose between something like a 30x0 at $600-800 or a 4080 at $1200

one huge problem i have to think for nvidia is the real dearth of amazing games that you want to push visuals on. Elden Ring... Callisto Protocol maybe, not really a ton of else for a while?

DLSS 3.0 is exclusive to RTX 40xx
