The difficulty ramp is there and it is the best action combat system.

Until some other comparable games come out-- if you are a fan of innovation in the genre, it's a must buy.

17hrs in. the combat is always satisfying,u get to choose deflect, parry, dodge, then issen which I suck ass. deflect and parry are my usual go to.

however, I have a feeling this game is not complete in that alot of rehash and running around town again and again. and also a nagging feeling of more weapons and mobs were intended. the world def dosent opens up with the exotics of sekiro.

but for now it scratches a nice itch for such genre

Yeah if you want "souls difficulty" I am pretty damn sure if you play an Issen-only run, that should do it. If that doesn't do it, then NG+ combined with an Issen-only rule should do it for you.

It's quite fucking hard to beat a boss with just Issen alone.... It's certainly beyond me, and I 100%'d Elden Ring and the DLC at launch.

Placed an order for physical copy. Seems it damn near sold out anywhere around me and online.

I thought I was doing fine, dying two or three times against most bosses but then beating them, and able to beat them first try for the most part in boss rematch.

And then I started the final couple story missions.

I am humbled.

Part of that is the difficulty ramp. There is no indication that getting hit once or twice will be a massive problem later on. They give you heal buffs, heal charm, 2 different slotted consumable heals, only to later suddenly give you a fight that requires no-hit. Get hit once and you might as well reset the fight. Having to heal is basically a signal you lost the fight. It's a 180 from early game, where getting hit isn't really a big deal. You are led to believe there will be a gradual incline in difficulty with having to use more healing, only to run into boss mechanics that make getting hit a loss when they power up.

It's impressive reflexes for sure. But sadly I think it also makes the fights a lot less interesting visually, they're just "spamming" (with incredibly precise timing of course) the same move over and over again, no swords clashing, no deflections, no dodges, no grabs, and of course there's the health sponge problem. Even an overhead hit with two hands as a Oni takes away like 3% of the enemy's health (and it's not even a real boss). Hell, even the ultimate Oni finisher near the end only chips away some health.

It's a shame they based Carnage difficulty around Issen mostly because I think it takes away from a lot of the game's strengths (the beautiful combat and the different ways to approach it).

the bad thing is there is indeed alot of parry to be done. but the perfect block while already holding block is essential to lower boss stamina then followed by parry.

the good thing, there is alot of repeat fights of the same boss,.so you eventually nail thr timings as you progress

I’m assuming that perfect block is holding L1 then tapping X or whatever. On ps5 here. So my dumbass got told about that. So I was trying jt during multiple fights. Found out this morning it’s a talent or skill you get later? lol.

Issen man - my ass is not reflexive enough for that.

For the first few chapters/bosses of the game, you're supposed to learn how to deflect (when your enemy's blade slides off yours to the side) and dodge kicks/punches and counter grabs.

Then you'll learn how to "perfect parry" which is done by holding parry down (L1 on PS5) and then pressing X at the exact moment of the enemy's strike, which depletes the enemy's stamina bar quite well.

Issen is learned in the end game, but it's very tricky I find. Sadly it seems to be pretty much the meta for NG+ on Carnage.

Yeah. I was fighting some white lion something fucker. I’m only 25% in per the PlayStation tracker. But I had a hard time getting the timing down on some of his moves to deflect. I do like that the AI will back away to regenerate stamina. Forces you to not turtle, which is my natural tendency.

One of the bow upgrades makes your arrows last longer on the target and prevents them from regenerating stamina/stance while the arrow is stuck on them, which allows for some breathing room to heal when you're circling one another.

Whether it takes 30 or 40 attempts you eventually get the moveset down and are able to just stay in the pocket super aggressive to victory. The "unblockable" super attack that requires a perfect parry being the hardest part to time. Some bosses don't do their super attack often but the ones that do normally give you a decent indicator and you can eventually feel out the timing. You just need to be able to replicate that timing more than 2 or 3, maybe 4 times. While of course also parrying all the normal stuff which is on wildly different animations. But enough attempts and you should be able to neo in the matrix it, unless of course you are on the last boss.

I agree it's lame they went that direction and I personally won't participate in it. There's a need to appeal to hardcores to get good reviews. I can Issen in practice mode a bit, but on fresh bosses it's just not something I was ever interested in "getting good" at. Too sweaty. Even guys who handled the Ring DLC would struggle here. "Now land every single Issen on every boss attack if you are so tough". I get it-- they wanted to make sure word of mouth was the game is plenty hard. The base game is good enough of an experience for me. And I am sure sweats are satisfied flexing their perfect Carnage Issen runs. To each their own.
