so based on what nirgon is saying, VR made an announcement that if you got the $300 alpha pledge you could play the game. Collected a ton of money from a bunch of new pledges, and then at the last minute said "oops we just realized our MMO doesn't function with an actual player population, testing canceled, thanks for the money"

And they weren't even in the game yet. Not like they crashed the server from playing it but, what, cratered the DB from registering accounts?
