The unfortunate thing in all this is we'll probably never truly know how much interest something like this would generate due to this abortion of a KS campaign. Despite how piss poor it is, I still expected something better than 2800 with all the talk on how there is this groundswell of interest in a game like this. And then I wonder if the 2800 who backed this game are backing it only because Brad is involved. If you had some no name dev trying to make a game based on EQ mechanics would the interest be there, even if the KS was tons better than this?

Hard to argue with any of this right now. I know for me, Pantheon is the end of the road. I wont be on here talking old school mmos again. Regardless of all the reasons why.. If this game doesn't make it, I wont be making those old school arguments.

Has there been an MMORPG launched since WoW that hasn't a) totally shit the bed, or b) been lacking in some critical aspect (ex. Endgame content)?

there is a market. just because there has been one half assed attempt at it with a KS that looked like it took 20 minutes to put together doesn't mean the market doesn't exist. by that idiotic reasoning star wars should have failed because when it released there was no market for a space opera. how'd that turn out?

2001 grossed like 200mil in 1969. There was a huge market for a space opera. The US space program had just landed a man on the moon 8 years earlier... Wtf are you talking about.

It's been weird, to say the least, watching people defend Brad needing startup costs by basically fantasizing about what the game could be.

Repeated for the millionth time. If they'd just focused on a pitch that they need help getting a studio set up with the intention of starting to build the game they want, I think it would have had a better chance to get funded instead of bringing all the THIS GAME REALLY IS GONNA ROCK enthusiasts that basically made it all about a game that doesn't yet exist.

Sometimes the simplest, truest message is the one that will get the most traction.

there was absolutely no market for a space opera when george lucas made star wars. everyone was certain it would fail (even george lucas himself and the actors in the movie). yet it didn't fail, went on to be one of the highest grossing films of all time and completely changed movie making forever. point is, if you make something awesome, people will like it. saying that "mechanics from 1999 will never ever work again" is just idiotic. make an amazing world with flawless execution, drop in EQ style game play, and it would be hugely successful.

The whole premise behind utility AI is giving mobs choices of what they do based around their surroundings and others actions. Not running scripts or making them walk in a set pattern every 2 min or stand there waiting for you to kill them.

Ya, there was no market for a high-tech sci-Fi film in the 70s, at the height of American space exploration.

I'll just take George Lucas' and Mark Hamill's word for it. It's common knowledge that they were moonlighting as cultural analysts.

i dont think anyone has a problem with radient quests or dynamic mob movement, amd im not sure why you think that and class interdependence are mutually exclusive. theyre not.

what many take issue with is everyone can be an ogre wizard rogue knight cleric, doing flying backflips with their monotized boots of thre zephyr, spamming aoe attacks with a couple random people with whom they were teleported to an instanced dungeon with.

you're confusing science fiction with space opera. there were a lot of science fiction movies, there weren't any space opera's (think of the flash gordon series of the 1930's). there weren't any movies out even remotely anything like star wars when he made it. so there obviously wasn't a "market" for it. yet it was hugely successful. saying there isn't a market for something so it shouldn't be done is complete stupidity. if close minded people like that ran the world, we'd never get anywhere.
