I think part of the misdirection is we kept getting scenes with Ads, so the “lack of black people” wasn’t really noticeable.

The second part is that when I see a cast, I never am like “ok is there at least one black person on screen? Cool.” Because normal people don’t judge characters based on color but their acting ability and character. Only sociopaths look at skin color first.

Third, when it IS perfectly diverse, it’s hella jarring. Disney’s most recent movies where it’s a medieval kingdom but they have an Asian, a black, a Latino, a white woman, and no straight white men in an English speaking Western European medieval country IS jarring because it’s so immersive breaking. That’s not how civilizations are. At most youd have predominantly 1 skin color, and then a small subset of nearby color. Like a Portuguese kingdom would be mostly white then a few Arabs from North Africa. MAYBE a sub Saharan black person but even that was extremely rare in medieval europe. Let alone having Latino people in Europe before the discovery of the new world. That’s some Graham Hancock level world building.

yet James Gunn is pointing the finger at the audience like, “YOU DIDNT NOTICE THIS? You bigot.”
Targeted demographics have been a thing in both Hollywood and advertising for a very long time. As a way to get through commercial breaks (back when I used to watch TV with commercials in it) I would try to figure out the various targeted demographic. Basically, if you don't see someone that you can identify with, they are not advertising to you.

Eventually applied that to movies. Office Space was made for my demo, while Friday was not. Regardless, I liked both movies.

Once identity politics infected everything (especially in the last 10 years) it's been hard NOT to notice how Hollywood operates when it comes to demographics. Hell, the Academy Awards has diversity quotas that must be filled to even be considered for an award.

I remember seeing criticism a few years ago about how racist / bigoted academy awards were because they weren’t accurately representative.

Americas black population is 15%, and I remember when I ran the numbers for the academy awards were winners that year, it was 20% winners were black. The criticism was right, because it was accurately representative, they were over represented.

I mean academy awards and award shows are run entirely by money, though. It’s not a democratic process. Winners are selected by a select, small panel, and those in the panel are given gifts and special privileges “for their consideration” of certain movies. The awards are pay to win.

Now a days, I know if something is an academy award winning movie it most likely won’t be fun, won’t be a blockbuster, and I probably won’t like it. In the last 25 years the only academy award winners I can think of that I liked were the lord of the rings and parasite.

How did you like Friday? I don’t understand. You have to be a black American to enjoy black American movies. If I learned anything from social media, it’s that a white man cannot enjoy or begin to understand the perspective of other skin colors.

meanwhile every kid I know from every single skin color could related with Goku

Million percent of the time you can always tell if it’s a “black people” movie and then instantly tune it out and never think of it again
