Dunno if it's just a Canadian thing, but what do pet stores look for in potential cat owners ?

My mother went to a 'Pet Valu' store to looky loo because they got in a cute cat, but she said a lady was there complaining that they refused to let her adopt it because she already has two old cats and an old dog, so it would be a "bad environment" for a young cat.

The lady also told her a man was refused a cat adoption while she was there the first time, because the staff told the man they don't believe that he's a good fit. Every cat I've known just lies around mostly, is there really a need to be that stringent ? I'm considering walking in there with a MAGA hat to see if they call the police.

I think the correct strategy is to go to a different pet store and never return to this place.

Cat stores here I believe just look for $$$. Dunno we got ours from the litter my in-laws had. They got their cats free at an animal feed store I believe.

There are thousands of cats in shelters/pounds looking for homes. The SPCA is just a few miles from my work, and so far 3 of the 4 cats I've owned have come from there and been amazing.

One of them, about 10 years ago, was $40 to adopt (I hear it is $60 now). They called me back later that day and said they fucked up, it was during a sale to try to get more cats adopted and it was actually only $4. They offered me the $36 back if I wanted to come pick it up. I told them to keep it because they put way more than $40 worth of work into each cat anyway.

But seriously, fuck pet stores. They are probably getting their animals from puppy/kitty mills anyway. The SPCA spays/neuters them, gives them their shots and a checkup, gives you a coupon for a free checkup as well, and has a 30 day return policy if it gets sick or you just can't get along with it. And I bet it is cheaper too. Not much more you can ask for, I feel.
