We just finished the Director's Cut tonight. It has been years since seeing the last regular version so really no idea which scenes were added / lengthened. Still a badass movie though. I just tell myself it is 100% historically accuate.

I didn't know there was a directors cut. Remember seeing it in the theater way back in the day. Does it add a bunch of runtime?

Like 10 minutes? Movie is already almost 3 hours and I think this put it right about that time. It’s on Amazon Prime for regular rental cost, $3.59 or whatever.

Mel Gibson movies are only one step above Ridley Scott when is comes to history, in which neither have any real basis in reality, other than using the names.

Well, except for one movie, which is We Were Soldiers (outside of the last 10 minutes) and that was due to him not being involved in directing or writing. That movie was only half of the book, which ended in a draw (there was no offensive at the end to send the NVA into retreat). In the second half of the book, the US forces fell into a more traditional ambush and had an even worse time.

Braveheart was probably my favorite movie as a kid and once I got more into history as an adult, his molestation of it really killed most of my enjoyment of his work.

Rewatched weekend at bernies.

That movie is white boy summer in the flesh. There's one black guy and he's in the background not saying a word.

Dramas are to be entertaining not historically accurate. The genre you are looking for is documentary.

Tell that to the Gettysburg cast and crew.

Also, they can be be both, instead of almost total fiction, like Gibson and Scott movies. When a vast majority of people that watch these movies only get their "history" through them, the writers and directors are teaching people bad history. Which is a bit annoying and a large reason for me to have distain for those movies, even if it's not Hollywood's responsibility to better inform the public.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
It has zero depth, zero emotions, the fight scenes were poorly done, we don't care for any of the cast. Vilain sucked, the scene with the merovingian was cringeworthy.
1/10

Agreed. Watched that with my mom on Christmas 2021, at a time when we weren't really ever spending time together anymore, and was physically angry that I wasted a rare movie with her on it.

Gladiator 2 - Aside from having fuckin' Pedro Pascal in it, this was pretty decent. The main issue it has is that it isn't a standalone movie, and it lives very much in the shadow of the first Gladiator. The main character (Maximus' son) has nowhere near the gravitas and charisma that Maximus had. Pascal's semi-villain had some potential, but he got overshadowed by the other three villains. Oh yeah, too many villains. Denzel's character was good as the "adult in the room" who manipulates and usurps, while the bloodthirsty twin Emperors were charismatic dicks. Props to the movie for not making them in-your-face Trump allegories and turning off viewers. They were more like a couple of Joffreys. Would have been alright in a vacuum, as it was just made me want to watch the original instead. Also, good luck trying to make any sense out of the Roman Emperor continuity as it's portrayed in these two movies, since the guy who is Emperor at the end of this was actually Emperor before Commodus was, and one of the twin Emperors (who, spoiler alert, both get got) was supposed to outlive the other by like 20 years... 6/10.

It Ends With Us - Surprisingly good movie about domestic violence and shitty parents. Blake Lively is insanely hot in this, as is whoever that was who played her younger self. I expected very little out of this, and it's very much a movie intended for the "New Yorker" crowd (everyone is inexplicably well-off and live in towers, and have brunches and shit). But goddamn if it didn't end up being a really powerful movie. Would have liked if the "old love interest that ends up being the right choice" had actually been a waiter, as the movie kind of leads you to think at first, instead of turning out to be the guy that owns the restaurant. Not every goddamn character needs to be uber-successful, and her getting together with the guy with the down-to-earth job would have been cool. Small nitpick though. 8/10.

Skinamarink - Hated this. What even is this? It was a bunch of footage of an empty house, with creepy voices. I think something happened eventually but I was barely staying awake. 1/10.

Challengers - The first time I've ever seen Zendaya be hot, this is another movie I expected nothing from that ended up being damn good. Anybody who has ever done competitive sports (or hardcore physical sport) and been injured out of it will probably understand this movie on a pretty deep level. Full of nuances and callbacks and things that you recognize on a repeat viewing and go "whoa, that's clever, didn't catch that the first time". The final battle/match is a masterclass in non-verbal storytelling. 9/10.

Watched The Monkey this afternoon. Not bad for an Os Perkins movie. Definitely a different tone compared to his other films, but it was pretty good. Tried to see if there was a thread and I thought there was but no luck finding it.

Not the greatest horror movie I've ever seen but definitely wasn't a waste of time. Had some pretty funny moments.

I did a search for the monkey but nothing came up even with just a straight thread title search. Weird. Maybe it was the 2025 deal.

I was pretty sure you had already posted one and I probably had talked about it or something, and I guess I was right.

Threads made while search was down between July 2024 and April 2025 haven’t been indexed unless they’ve had activity since the fix. The only way to find them is by using the Google search trick: firesofheaven.org + "insert movie title".

The Old Guard : 7/10. Despite the glaring wokeness propaganda, I liked the movie. I like when stories take place in a setting and the setting is not explained from A to Z, we just have to go along. It lacks a "wow" moment to get a better than 7 though.
The Old Guard 2 : 4/10. This was disappointing. The ending felt weak and rushed, and the plot seemed phoned in with little effort or originality, and made little sense. I wouldn't recommend it.

Deepwater Horizon. Its not... good. Its not horrible either. Its basically 60 minutes of explosions and fires. Marky Mark, John Malkovich and Kurt Russell all go through the motions with a script that basically says "Words don't matter. Mohr explosions!!". Watch if you are bored. 4/10

Fun movie to watch while having drinks with the spouse, preferably with a couple friends over. Its fun watching the Rube Golberg ways people get yeeted in this one and its not offensively stupid. Biggest con is CGI blood and kills, but its fun, funny, entertaining and doesn't feel its length. Also a good amount of misdirection which adds some nice surprises.

like 8/10 if tipsy drunk lol

Caught it last night. It's in the top half for the franchise. I agree that a little more use of practical effects would have been appreciated. There's a way modern films look when you can tell a whole lot of what's in a scene is CGI and it holds the movie back. The opening took a while to get going but by the end of the film that penny was over with me, brother.

Tombstone. 10/10 still. Love it.
Doc references daisies a few times. Apparently being called a daisy back in the day was a compliment. It meant tough , since it's a tough hardy flower.
