We made it a movie night last night and continued with our Daniel Craig 007 movies in Quantum of Solace. This movie was all action due to a writers strike but was still a decent flick. Beautifully shot (even the parts that were supposed to be Haiti. Oona Chaplin (of I'm all nekkid GoT fame) made an uncredited appearance at the end. 7.5/10

On a related note, I told my wife that I am scared of what Amazon is going to do with the 007 franchise as they did so well with Lord of the Rings.
The Daniel Craig trilogy of Bond films is so good. Genuinely love Casino Royale - Skyfall.

I have seen Spectre and No Time to Die once, and have no desire to watch them ever again. The only part of NTTD that was enjoyable was the introduction of Ana de Armis’ very rookie character and her ad libbed dialogue they kept for the film.

Daniel Craig said to Ana de Armis (the actor not her character) that she was doing great, and the actor said, “thanks! It’s my first day and I’m still getting the hang of it” or something similar. They liked the line and used it for the movie.

Watched a Gary Oldman movie that got by me; Darkest Hour. He plays Winston Churchill in his first days in parliament when the world didn't know what Hitler was going to do. This movie was outstanding, and I highly recommend it. 9/10 would invade again.

Edit: Also, the woman in slow horses who hates Gary Oldman's character plays his wife in this movie.

Black Phone 2

From the trailer it reminded me of A Nightmare on Elm Street and it wouldn't have taken a whole lot to have turned this script in to another one of those. Overall it's fine but it's too long. Once it gets up to speed in the second half it's decent with some solidly fucked up shit but the first fifty minutes are just dull. You cut the 110+ minute runtime down to it's best 90 minutes and it would have been pretty good. I saw this at home. As a theater experience this would have been terrible but I didn't do that so it's a C+. Someone less familiar with movies in which a supernatural slasher gains power from his victims that he uses to come at you in your dreams might like it a bit more but this isn't my first rodeo.

I watched the first one earlier this year, but for the life of me, I really don't remember much about it other than Ethan Hawke wearing a creepy mask and a ghost phone.

How was it compared to the first one?

I don’t remember Joe Hill writing a follow up to Black Phone so I’m guessing this one is all original? I wasn’t super impressed with the 1st movie but would still give a sequel a shot.

It's a little worse.

Yeah, Joe didn't contribute anything to the writing on this one. Something that is present in his books is the "special powers = cursed" trope where people who use their gifts are slowly killing themselves or driving themselves mad. Our character's mom had the Shinning, it drove her crazy, she killed herself, the sister has the Shinning, she's going to go crazy too because that's just how it works with Joe Hill. It's a little ugly subtext in the novella and then is in the first film as well. The writer and the director must have feelings similar to my mine on the subject (it's lame) because this movie fixes that whole idea.

Sounds like it ruins the premise of what made the first one a solid film.

The novella is sorta Cole Sear (the sixth sense kid) versus John Wayne Gacy where the ghosts of Gacy's victims aid our hero. Most of that comes across in the movie but I hate bolting on the useless abusive drunk single dad character on to a story. It's not in the novel and I'm just beyond done with it as a trope.

The sequel has The Grabbler obtain quite a lot of the powers of Freddy Krueger with the sister being the main character. Some good visuals but just too long. I can't say it ruined the premise as much as it is a different premise entirely.

Black Phone 2 popped in to my head a few times today so it's probably a little better than I was giving it credit for.

A little.

Even though he was/is considered to be a "second rate" director in his prime, his works hold up. He will be remembered fondly as a film genius. (John Carpenter).

Last nights movie was Skyfall. I watched it originally in a theater with my wife and last night in our living room. Great movie. Trivia says it was inspired by the 2nd Chris Nolan Batman (another amazing movie) and since I knew to look for it you can definitely tell. Beautiful movie (watched it in 4K) and a lot of action. 9/10

Wow- I just watched it (Skyfall). Man... I dunno what to say.

I just HATE James Bond in the 21st century. It's like he doesn't belong here. Think Austin Powers.

When you TRY to force the character into the moral background it just doesn't work at all. Just get rid of the idea of James Bond entirely. Please. We have Matt Damon/Jason Bourne to usher us into this century's spy movies.

It's strange how you can adapt certain core characters (eg., Jack Ryan) and they can survive the cultural and political movement. Watch "Patriot Games." It still holds up despite the political/social climate shift. (Plus, I still think that Harrison Ford played him "right" despite all the weird and seemingly random deletions from the text to the film.

I despised Skyfall and couldn't wait until it ended... James Bond has no ego-identity or ID or underlying psychopathology. "He's a [REAL] man, baby!" Just from another era.

It's my favorite film by him next to The Thing.

Fuck yeah! I do like Prince of Darkness quite a bit, and of course In the Mouth of Madness. Along with Escape from New York, that's really his best 5 hands down.

A truly excellent bit of dialogue.
