Aniara (2018)

Man, if you want to watch a depressing ass movie, watch this. I thought it was pretty good, but it definitely requires a certain taste. It’s based on a 1950s poem about a big transport spaceship that gets knocked off course. Passengers get lied to and fed false hope the whole way. Total feeling of hopelessness. It’s one of those movies that sticks with you afterward. I watched the English dub, which has some cringe dialogue, so it might be better with just the subtitles. Anyway, solid 3.5/5 from me.
I watched it a while ago and I agree it's pretty depressing but still thought it was a pretty good film. The subtitled version is definitely better.

Watched this as we do horror movies on the weekend in October. Still fucking legit. Brad Dourif makes the movie.
This movie fucking rules. It has a huge cult following too.

I finished Exorcist 1 and 3 the last two nights. Had never seen 3 and it is one of the few movies that I genuinely wished was longer just so we could see more Scott and Dourif. Was really incredible. Sucks it has taken me so long to finally see it but was an amazing first watch, especially back-to-back. Been over 20 years since watching the original Exorcist too. Man, that movie is fucked up today but must have been turbo fucked up for 1973.

Yeah I got turned onto it by The Last Drive In. So glad I did. I watch it almost every year. I really love Halloween 3 as well, for similar odd ball reasons.

Yeah I was like Halloween 3 just because it was different. Same actor who plays the male protagonist was also a Night of the creeps which is another great '80s horror movie, but it's pretty hard to find especially the full length cut. It's worth seeking out if you can get a hold of it.

Tonights blast from the past was a good one:

Colin was on Graham Norton promoting some marathon documentary (?) and mentioned this movie came to him right after he was out of rehab. All that drinking/drugging in the movie was like rubbing it in his face. Great flick. It starts sort of weird but stick with it. Also everyone from the Harry Potter movies except Weasley and Granger are in it.

Mother of God I love a great espionage film. And there really are lot of "spy movies" but damn few espionage masterworks.

This is one. It is LeCarre meets Angela Taylor meets Barry Eisler in SOuth America (It's a Spanish film).

It is brilliant but it demands attention. There is a LOT going on and it is all relevant.

It's a FANTASTIC film. 8.5 Genius level.

Also (since I am in my espionage phase):

This is everything and NOTHING like every other female spy/assassin film you have ever seen. Chess is the theme (even though it is only subversively so). Extraordinary-- nothing is what it seems, except it is ALL what it seems. See it. It's another masterwork of spy films. Also 8.5

Don't Move. Solid creature feature. Give it a solid 7 out of 10. If you are a fan of Impractical Jokers there are lots of Easter Eggs.

Believer 1 & 2

Watched them both, they are Korean movies, about a cop and an vengeful drug maker working against each other to try to take down Mr. Lee, the shadowy drug kingpin behind a new, incredibly valuable drug on the market - Laika.

Lots of action, a good mystery in both movies, and well-paced. 9/10 for both.

Streaming on Netflix

Watched the original a long while ago, but never saw the sequel. Probably better then the first one. The second half was the stronger bit and the demon was crazy lol. Getting Ray Nicholson to do the smile was an obvious but satisfying thing lol.

8/10

Someone mentioned it was time for a rewatch so that's what I did today instead of sleeping (Damn back!)

Great movie, I figured out the 'surprise' before it was revealed the first go around , made all the hair on my arms stand on end. Already knew it this go round but still a good watch. Amy Adams is a babe, and she looks like the girl next door, with a perfect nose.

A big halloween roundup!

Late night with the Devil. -tubi.

not bad. the reviews in the thread here are all pretty accurate. great production, great camera work, etc. more fun than scary. Opening and ending kind of failed imho. it starts with a narration, with lots of exposition to make sense of the meta narrative. which is really lame. they couldn't find a way to get the narrative into the movie.. then the finale is just lame. quick deaths for a few people. and just an odd background reveal for the host.. like all the demon wanted to do, was remind Jack he made a deal with the demon? thats.. so lame. Ghostwatch obviously did a far better job with this concept.
7/10

---
The resort. -tubi.

middling/weak c list movie. pretty people. decent effects. let down story, horrible finale.
4/10. dont bother.

----
the hyperions -Amazon.

Carry ewes. neat concept. retro futurism. not sure who this was for. not really for kids. not for adults. budget too low to be great. oh, apparently this is from the Daily wire.
5/10

---
High spirits -amazon

peter o'toole is great. daryl hannah is awful. beverly d'angelo is great. its amazing how she can play a horrible karen and still be likeable. parts of this holds up. much of it does not sadly.
its been a bit since I've seen Haunted Honeymoon, but iirc that holds up better.
6/10.

Do not enter. - amazon

2/10

---
dead and breakfast. -amazon

this is an odd one. its both bad. but super quirky, and silly. I didn't like it.. but they DID try. wants to be an army of darkness, night of the demons, reanimator, etc type movie.
5/10 I guess.. maybe 4...

the hem. -amazon

Solid haunted building/ghost investigation movie. pretty standard, nothing super notable or GREAT. but solid.

5/10.

---
spooky stakeout -amazon

terrible. kids movie. by kids for kids. tv movie.

1/10

----
Succubus -amazon

Tight story. everything fits. no loose ends. very well done. good creature design. piss hands perlman shows up. generally pretty natural human dialogue was interesting. the actress/succubus was the weakest point. got a model/of girl or something. couldn't act. having her just roll around while the guy is having a heart to heart was silly. if, the "girl" you are trying to make a date with says, "she hates her body", "wants your body", and won't talk becuase her "throat is hurt" thats a dude. I had to stop thee movie and check thee reviews cause I was wondering if this was going in another direction lol.

6/10. probably would recommend.

---
sunrise -amazon

didnt even finish.
1/10

---
lookout -amazon

alright creature feature. needs more story.

4/10

---
gothic slayers -amazon

two putt putt employees come across a cult sacrificing people for powers from a demon.
actually pretty solid. Features pixel animations via video games to save on FX budget. a neat idea. young adult actors are all solid. its the adults that suck amusingly.

6/10 would recommend to people that would enjoy creative but cheap goofy movies.
