I'm on the verge of impulse buying it, as long as you know the combat is more like Naval ships. My only concern is how much story driven motivation does it give? That's the only thing that gives me pause - is it just go anywhere and do tasks or is it more like Privateer with a story line that you can kind follow while doing side mission/exploration in whatever direction you want to within reason.

Kinda between the two. Definitely not as deep as Freelancer (at least so far) but it has story elements and some of the shit seems to be procedural. For instance there's a news board that shows a war is starting in system X so traders watch out and mercs have fun or alien artifacts just discovered here or desperate need for medical supplies on this station.

It seems like it'll be worth the price easily, $30+ I'd say wait for a sale or other reviews.

It is more naval combat, seems only 2D for cap ship combat BUT 3D for escorts, turrets and secondaries auto fire and give full control in a wide range gimbal mount if you want to manually zap some small pests. That said it does seem like starter weapons and maneuvering kind of makes traditional naval tactics kind of a moot point because everything is a brawl, who knows if that will change with other ships though.

This game is good. Possibly even above average. Especially for a space game that is stuck in a 2d plane.

I got my ass handed to me within 5 minutes.
My first quest was to make "an exchange" and after I reach the destination.. there's nothing there. I waited a few minutes then I get murdered by hostile enemies (had no idea how to fight back, the controls are too alien to me).

Yeah its rough out there in 2 dimensional space.

I upgraded all my main weapons and defenses on my starter ship, including buying a rocket launcher type dealie. Really helped. There are still encounters, especially with pirates, that will push your shit in in that first zone, but you can do the missions you get for the most part once you do that, and then you'll start bringing in cash.

That's my suggestion, but you'll have to get past that fight first probably to make it happen. Try taking a cheap side quest or two and doing them to get used to the controls.

I submitted a refund request after putting a couple hours into this. I wanted to like it, but the 2D plane kind of kills it for me.

Understandable. It almost put me off the game as well, but I stuck with it a little bit longer and came to accept the limitation.

I don't really like the 2d plane, though. Especially after playing Elite Dangerous

Games like this are better on a tablet or console. Its a waste to do a 2d shooter like this on the PC, imo.

So this game plays great with a gamepad. Second, the game should be visualized as quite literally a pirate ship game in the sea of space. If you are expecting a space sim, it isn't quite that other than art and setting - which is great. I've only visisted 5 systems in my world and there is at least 4+ racial ship types that I have fought against so far. From fighters to huge capitals. Ship progression (hull) is independant of what guns you have so the progression paths don't step on toes. Thus far there is a main storyline, a couple guilds. I've lost my shields in a nebula storm. The one thing that this games Pirate ship combat has that pirate ship games don't are the following.

1) Missles, Lasers, Mines, Turrets etc.
2) The ship has boost, and there is obviously no space wind.
3) There are a lot more icebergs and reefs in space (asteroid fields, space stations, large capital ships.
4) Deflector Shields - You have both passive shields and deflector shields - the Deflectors prevent offensive firing, but absorb up to an amount of damage. So you flash them on against torpedo's or missle volley's or in evasive situations.
5) Warp Speed, You cover a lot more distance in the sea of space.

Anyways, game is good, I think a few of the last posts while valid in their personal dislike are giving a shaded view of what you should expect from this game and precisely what it delivers (its good so far)

So, will it bring back some of that Freelancer nostalgia with a fresh pirate ship experience?

By the way, the soundtrack is just a bunch of .ogg files in a subfolder so dumping other songs in there should add them into the game's playlist.

So I overcame Dead John by trying my Freelancer trick of ignoring the story missions and running cargo until I can buy an overpowered POS and curbstomp everything in the sector.

This appears to have worked for a while but some of the heavier frigate class ships are just... it's basically a hard counter. The one downside to 2d capital ship combat is that extra maneuverability is only partially useful. Some ships you can S-curve behind them and swap broadsides right to left into their aft IF you have vastly superior maneuverability and speed/boost. Some of them will be able to just out-turn your BS and smack you anyway which kind of sucks. If you could use the Z-axis you'd be able to actually keep a broadside on them safely as long as you could outmaneuver their roll-rate.

That said flak batteries are lolworthy, they just annihilate fighters.

The combat feels like the pirate Assassins Creed, it's like old naval ship battles. Strafe along side, fire your cannons, circle around and do it again.

FYI, early on in the game the mining laser rapes small ships

I'm having loads of fun with this one. I'm only in the third system for now, but I got myself a Sturville ship that is pretty cool (though ugly as sin) and I stole a Badger turret which is awesome - homing and unlimited ammo - from some of the cat people.

It's pretty fun when you get some exotic weaponry, early on I found a viridian laser turret from those Korians or whatever those invaders are called in one of those transponder secret caches. That turret was just killing everything for quite a while.

I think I'm kind of stuck again right now and have to trade my way out.

I have an Icarus pretty well kitted out with level 2 stuff and even level 3 main batteries (lasers) but man, I am getting torn up by some of the bigger things in the first system. I'm on the mission right now Squealer or something, the frigate class ship just destroys me with missiles. I've peeled the escorts twice but I just get hammered just trying to get through that ship with beams and ion cannons.

Is the Icarus the first ship? Upgrade to the second ship for like 40k ish, it's not a 100% solution but I'm way more durable. I'm still in the 1st sector as well

No it's like the 4th ship.

EDIT: just beat it actually. Forgot I'd never upgraded deflectors. Managed to absorb enough of his missile spam with it.

Cool. I just upgraded to a third ship. When I recovered some artifact or some shit for the ship AI thing you get with the story line I picked the upgraded deflectors, as well as buying upgraded deflector. Helps a lot to soak up the missile damage, for sure.
