Why even call it Resident Evil? I would have been more excited about this as a regular horror movie than I am about it being RE

not great but he has a good sense of story (barbarian, weapons) so hopefully its just a good movie with some resident evil sprinkles

Wut? The city is destroyed by a nuke, it literally shows it in a cut scene.

He wrote the story before securing the rights so it's like any other franchise repurposing a script. Instead of zombies it's a monster/bioweapon focus.

Pretty much what I assumed. Dumb faggots who could never get their ideas greenlight so they skinwalk some established IP instead.

Not a nuke, an experimental thermobaric bomb (as of a RE3 director intereview). There's no radiation when you return to Raccoon City eventually, and the crater from the blast is much smaller than the city.

You learn later it was all a ploy to make everyone believe Raccoon City was gone, while operations continued underground (RE9).

Pretty dumb to say a guy's wrong about knowing what happened in a game because he described what happened in a game, and not some interview a director gave later.

So, this is nothing more than your run of mill zombie movie with RE easter eggs.

Yeah I’ll never understand the retcon of changing it from a nuke

the ending of OG RE3 describes Raccoon City as being wiped off the map

Like most retcons, it's because they 1) ran out of ideas and 2) realized stuff sells (even) better with nostalgia.

The most loved Resident Evil games are all in Raccoon City except RE4 which even some purists consider too much of a departure (more action oriented, no "zombies", in Spain, etc..).

RE5 was already a lot less popular, RE6 is disliked by most, RE7 and RE8 are kind of their own thing (first person, new character, new gameplay, no "zombies").

Then you can either bring back Leon and Raccoon City and RE9 becomes the fastest-selling game of the franchise (over 7 million copies in under 2 months), or you can keep Raccoon City as a canonically radioactive wasteland.

Hmm, choices choices..

IIRC the nuke becoming a thermobaric bomb retcon occurred before even RE5 was released. It was still a dumb retcon back then

Yeah: here, from a story analysis of the franchise going back to 2006

As established by the epilogue of Outbreak, the bomb that destroyed Raccoon City wasn't actually a nuclear weapon. Further, the missile Jill and Carlos see was just the first of many.

He's made some good stuff and if this was his first chance to really cash in on a big payday than good for him. Twenty-million and it looks like he got a free hand creatively? Stack that paper.
