But this is about what I get when downloading through steam or anywhere else:

It was closer to 900 when I got it a few months ago, tech has been out. Replaced all the hardware, same thing and he was at a loss as to why it was happening. I have not made any changes to hardware or eithernet lines etc. Any ideas?
What router do you have?

For mine I had to enable HW nat offloading.

--Don't use mesh unless you have to. Meaning you simply have no way to run cat 5 to your AP's. The Ubiquiti implementation of mesh is pretty good, but it simply isn't as robust as AP hand off with their standard AC line. Honestly, I'd rather use powerline adapters along with standard AP's than a mesh implementation.

-- Don't setup AP's with different SSID's, that's retarded as your devices will hold onto a near dead signal when the stronger SSID is available. Only reason to setup an alternate SSID is for ancient devices where you need a dedicated 2.4ghz SSID, or you are stuck with "dummy" AP's like Linksys, where setting the same SSID is totally unreliable and you have to depend on gimmicks like beacon disassociation.

-- Ubiquiti is the only vendor that I know of that does AP hand off at a price point that is suitable for home, while also not being junk quality. Meraki does it good as well, but is much more expensive.

So you have a single wireless access point or switch between your single device and the isp?
I have the gateway and all cat6 runs from that, the switch is in the she shed in the backyard because the wife needs two wired points out there for work and school. She actually gets better speed tests out there sometimes, like how it is supposed to be.
My computer is direct from gateway.

Could be a bad patch cable between your computer and the gateway. Or bad driver. Or throttling from the ISP, could try a vpn. Or the services you are trying to access have enacted throttling due to expected increased demand.

If you have a wired gaming PC and standard wifi devices (phone, tv streaming), nah. Need more info about your devices and home and what you're trying to accomplish by upgrading the internet plan.

Thanks 3301 3301 Mainly I upgraded because it was more bandwidth for less money. I have a wired gaming PC and a pirate box, these are usually only running at night, the 2 phones, 2 tablets( which mostly run kids youtube) and a switch along with potential plex or disney+ streaming are all throughout the day.

Sounds fine. I would consider upgrading the asus soon though unless it’s still getting firmware updates to address security vulnerabilities.

Sounds good, it got one in november, I'll keep an eye on it.

Anyone care to recommend a good modern platform for pfsense/OpenBSD/Linux firewall? Looking for something under $300 with at least dual intel 1gbe but that has pcie to upgrade to 10gbe later. Also small form factor highly preferred.

lol, something that can power 10Gbit, $300? Not this year.

Something small you mean? Sometimes Dell or HP have barebones servers with decent specs but little storage for $299. I keep hoping they'll come up with something like a decent NUC with 2 NICs or something bigger with PCIE. I would think the latest i3's or even Pentiums can do 10G no?

Netgate which sells pfsense hardware has an 8 core Xeon server for 10Gbit. Best bet is building a Ryzen system that you can drop an 8+ core in at a later point with a 10gbe card.

I was messing around speccing out some systems, since I might have to replace some VPN Firewalls in the future for side income and here's what I came up with. Netgate's $1000 offering uses Atoms and I bet either of these would blow them away.

AMD based, not rack mountable, Non-ECC

AMD Ryzen 3 3200G 3.6Ghz Quad Core
$94.99
Asus Prime A320I-K AM4 Mini-ITX
$92.99
Fractal Design Node 202 450W
$134.99
Transcend NVMe 128GB - TS128GMTE110S
$28.99
Corsair DDR4 2x4GB 2666 C15
$50.99
(Used) Dell i350 Dual 1gbe NIC, most new ones are counterfeits from China
$50.00
Total
$452.95

Intel based, 1U, ECC

Intel Core i3-9100F (no video) 4c 3.6/4.2bst
$74.99
SuperMicro Superchassis - CSE-505-203B 200w
$124.25
Transcend NVMe 128GB - TS128GMTE110S
$28.99
SuperMicro Mini-ITX MBD-X11SCL-IF-O (video) Dual Intel GBE
$199.99
Nemix Generic DDR4 2400 ECC 2x8GB 1.2V In QVL
$125.98
Total
$554.20

Could probably throw the AMD parts into the 1U case if desired, but I'm not 100% sure if Supermicro's riser would fit, though it probably would.

I'm finally upgrading my N type router to an ax type. I did not think to come here and ask questions before I did it, so instead I'll just say that I got these.

Go ahead and tell me all the ways I fucked up. The extender is because I needed an extender with the N type to cover the deck and it should supposedly mesh with the router.
The links aren't loading for me, so it's an ASUS RT-AX3000 Dual Band WiFi Router and an Asus AC1200 Dual-Band WiFi Range Extender

I'm a fan of asus routers. I have 2x ac68u's that still work great. I played around with meshing them, but the performance was subpar to using one as a wired ap. If you can do a cat 6 run, that will give you the best performance. Also, if running cable is possible, I'd buy a small AP that support PoE and a PoE injector so you don't have to worry about power.

Asus is one of the few router/wifi AP brands you'll find at Best Buy that actually patches their linux firmware for years afterwords.

Yay specs. What do the clients actually need? That should determine the hardware requirement. But yes an i3-9100f is going to destroy an Atom in terms of cpu power, but on the other hand, there are Atom based appliances that can run on PoE.
