Did you get the express 7?
ux7 and u7gx, i called up unify and they said theres no heat issue on the u7's w/ updated firmware, just push the new firmware when plugged in. i haven't plugged in the gx yet cuz i need to make a new attic line and i don't have any cat6 cables made yet (whatever happened to including patch cables?)

so you could right now just remote in to the u7pro in your moms house and force an update right? i guess that easy admin is a good selling pt for being the family "tech" to just buy unify and link it all under your account

Yep. That's what I do. I actually connected their network to mine with their SDWAN too. Not it just look like they are different subnets in my LAN. I can set up rules to be able to print on my parents printer and vice versa. I can also remote on their computer without vpn or other fancy stuff. In the future, I'm going to put a nas at their house as my third/forth offsite backup. The networking gear can rack up costs, but it's a one time fee, and the stuff just works.

Yeah I was doing tech support for the German club and two other paying clients. Remote admin was incredibly useful, if you get everything set right. I am personally using a UDM Pro that I upgraded to when I moved to my new house, along with a bunch of managed switches and a dedicated gateway that fiberchannels to the main switch, with like five APs scattered around the property. No real issues and we have it set up with like six VLANs for different purposes and have a dedicated NAS running some containers that do various shit for us, mostly hobby related. Cannot recommend it enough, but its not for the casual user.

My one critique is that they dropped support for their own previous home security gear with zero EOL plan and basically no real warning. So, I would be a little wary of relying on t hem for home security. Their travel router is fucking amazing, though. Totally worth the money if you need to access your home network while on the road for whatever reason (we do 3d printing cons and gaming cons with demos that run on our NAS) and pretty much iron tight security wise.

Beat me to the punch here, but yeah. I have a specific VLAN for our printing lab that we share with our friend who uses it with us (and has most of his set up at) so he can send and monitor jobs. We also have home brew apps for some of my homebrew board and TTRPG games running on our NAS that runs on its own isolated VLAN so the players can use the character creation tools while elsewhere or that we can reach via our travel router. And aside from wiring the property (which is also a one time expense), I maybe spent around two grand total on all this shit for our current place.

I didn't hear about this. Can you please elaborate?

Yeah, I got their travel router recently. I don't know if they make in batches of 10 or something, but the sold out within hours of release.

yea i figure w/ like real world tech limitations, the u7 stuff can be future proof until like 2040

i mean, how many crazy ppl are still using a wrt54?

For the travel router, yeah I had to check constantly. People were scalping them for like 4-5x the retail cost, too.

As for their home security stuff, they had a whole separate platform of camera, door, and motion detector products and the routers used to come preloaded with the software, similar to how they come with the IP Phone shit now. They just completely dropped support and at one point, no software updates and newer gear shipping without it. It was not very popular, but people were pissed. I guess they knew it was so so and the new stuff is the replacement.

if i wanted to get into ubiquity and all i really want is wifi7 (i already have 2.5 switches and my 5g internet maxes out at 350) do i get the express 7 and replace my router or go with a u7xg and use that as my wifi gateway and pop in u7 lites where the signal is weak?

Just a heads up, if you get a U7 Lite, it has WiFi 7, but it does not have the 6Ghz frequency. If you want to be able to take advantage of that, and have devices that can use it, it's better to get the Pro or XG.

I went with the Pro and have no heat issues, and it's nice having 6Ghz cause every asshole in a 2 block radius has their transmission power cranked to max on 2.4 and 5Ghz.

Yeah, I know what you mean about scalpers. You have to just buy their stuff if you see it available. I remember checking every day for the g6 entry pro. I managed to get it on launch day. It sold out 5 minutes after I bought it in the states. Furthermore, it's it's almost there they add a massive premium when selling it here.

Yeah, the pro is sweet. I gave it to my parents. I haven't been super happy with the XG. It's not as stable as the pro, and the range seems much worse. With the pro I used to be able to leave my building and walk like 10 meters before my wifi dropped. With the XG, my wifi drops the moment I leave my building. I don't know if it's the new shape or crappier components.

This guy has excellent material, especially for comparisons: Ubiquiti Guide — McCann Tech

It appears the XG has less gain on the antenna than the Pro in the 5Ghz range:

Back in 2018 I did some lobbying in DC around the use of unlicensed 6 GHz devices, still kind of irks me because I put in a lot of work meeting with members of Congress, FCC leadership, and the FCC Office of Engineering Technology. We had working sessions with vendors that ultimately created the devices.

We were arguing on behalf of the incumbent licensed users already operating in 6 GHz. Public Safety, Utilities, Railroad, etc and had good data showing that the proliferation of these devices would degrade the service of these established microwave hops.

A lot of arguing later and I moved on to other responsibilities, the FCC didn’t really seem to care because we were arguing against gigantic tech companies, and the opened the spectrum anyways. But if my memory is correct we did get a regulation on low power indoor device’s and any high power device has to use an Automatic Frequency Coordination tool that takes GPS and queries an FCC database to see if there are any licensed paths in the area and selects a different frequency (of course my argument was that no one would actually enforce AFC, amongst numerous other things).

IPv6 didn't seem to catch on and now I'm hearing snippets about IPv8. Any idea how long before that starts getting implemented?
Talking about the few devices actually using WiFi 7 got me thinking about it.

i might need to add a u7 for my first floor, currently just have the ux7 and u7pro on the opposite ends of the 2nd floor, which is also where we spend most of our downtime. but i notice if i'm on the first floor it'll be on 2.4g which isn't ideal obviously

but nothing has been dropping and i'm actually getting faster device initializations (wifi garage/wifi sprinkler, etc), so maybe i'll just spend my time learning how unifi does vlan instead

also is the u7 anntennas sensitive? i haven't mounted it to the wall yet (attic too hot) and if i just tap it, it blinks out of sync for a minute
