They'll go almost exclusively after the biggest dealers.

Its how they operate. They won't be busting low level dudes who sold a few bags of weed on there, they'll go after the guys who were pushing large quantities of x, coke, acid, heroin, meth, etc. as examples.

They never or rarely bust the small guys in stings like this, only the big guys.

Work it through. When they invest in currency what are they actually investing in? How long does a government last with hyperinflation, what is the unavoidable outcome of that instability?

It's not personal brutul. If you still don't get it, lets revisit how great bittcoins are in about a year.
I am not saying bit coins are going to last, just that they are no different than "real" currency in this regard. Money has value because people believe that it does. If people start using bit coin then it will be a real currency and its value will stabilize. If people lose faith in US dollars and stop using them, they will also become worthless.

They can only go after them if they got complacent and weren't encrypting things. The other concern would be if they manage to figure out the coin tumbler and can trace specific amounts of money to transactions then trace those transactions to specific ip addresses that the sellers were foolishly accessing from their home PC. But like I said, if DP was not recording a history of this, or only storing information about it for a set amount of time then the people who sent encrypted messages should be in the clear. (or an adaptive algo that can't be unwound)

So who will play him in the eventual movie 'The Silk Road To Hell'? He kinda looks looks like that foot faced guy from twilight. Maybe Emile Hirsch.

I dunno how all the TOR stuff works, but my understanding is the FEDS infiltrated and seized large chunks of the Tor network a few months ago, which leads me to think that may have been part of what allowed them to hunt down this DSP fella.

I'm thinking they may have a lot more data on the TOR traffic than people realize.

FBI Attack on Child Porn Sites May Have Blown Tor Users' Cover | Hacking | TechNewsWorld

I dunno, I'm not in IT and my knowledge of internet shit is literally amateurish. I can build my own pcs and trouble shoot my home network that's my extent of knowledge, but I'm thinking the Feds are looking to break up this entire Tor thing if they can and the first step was the kiddie porn peddlers, the next step was the biggest drug dealing network on the thing. Who knows where this goes next.

Maybe DSP destroyed records that will slow things down but I'm sure there will be at least a few more arrests and prosecutions of really big time dealers as this plays out. I don't see how anybody can be 100% safe from the Feds on the internet if the Feds really want to crack that person's persona.

Why? Do you want to get fucked by every FBI agent on the planet, too?

That'll teach chemical engineering majors to pretend they're IT guys.

(Dread Pirate Roberts has a masters in chemical engineering, so he is an idiot, but he's not a stupid idiot. He's a smart idiot, which is somehow worse.)
You know what I can't figure out? How is it that all these stupid, Neanderthal, Mafia guys can be so good at crime and smart guys like us can suck so badly at it?

Practice makes perfect, and most hardened criminals start practicing pretty goddamn early, so by the time they hit their early to mid 20s, they're already holding masters and doctorates in

Nah. They didn't 'hack' the TOR network. Lots of misinformation about what really happened. They installed a java vulnerabilityafterthey caught the guy hosting freedom hosting and seized his servers.

To be identified users had to - 1. access some freedomhosting sites after the exploit was installed 2. have java script enabled and 3. be running an outdated version.

I don't even think SR was hosted on freedomhosting.

What happened? The biggest hosting service for hidden services (onions) got caught. FBI took down his servers, inserted a JavaScript exploit to unmask visitors and put them on-line again.

Does this mean Tor/Silk Road/Insert hidden service is not safe anymore? Not necessarily. Until we know how he was caught we do not know if this method could be used against other services and/or users.

I heard he was caught by Java exploit which backtracked him?No. As far as we know the owner of Freedom Hosting did NOT get caught BECAUSE OF the JavaSCRIPT exploit but the FBI (or someone else) inserted it to all Freedom Hosting websites AFTER they caught him to catch visitors of websites hosted on his servers.

I am on Windows, should I be worried?Possibly. Yes if you visited a FH website last week using a version Tor Browser Bundle BEFORE v0.2.3.25-10 OR with a Firefox version before 17.0.7 WITHOUT disabling all scripts.

I am on Linux/Mac/Tails/Newest TBB. Should I be worried? Most likely no.

Is this good or bad?Depends. He did not only host arguably terrible material but also many useful legal services. Services which could have been used in country's with oppressive regimes. He is not a "CP host" like the media tells you but a host without rules on which people from around the world hosted all kinds of websites. I hate CP but true freedom is also for things you hate the most. FBI exploit is bad because it will catch lots of innocent people.

Now what.Use Tails if you can. ALWAYS DISABLE SCRIPTS.

What's needed is a decentralized marketplace - just like the way bitcoins are mainted or torrents. Has to be doable.
