Ya except all their games are still available on other digital distribution sites, and I'm quite sure they don't give their service away free.

I'm sure you still have to use origin no matter where else you buy it though, but I wouldn't know because I haven't bought any of their shit since BF3.

Well the game finally showed up under my games and I installed it from there, played through half the tutorial and their servers went down so I'm guessing my progress there won't be saved... Stuck on checking for updates now... Oh well back to star trek to kill some time lol.

So how is the game? Outside of that list of bugs and errors I just read, what else is wrong... or.. right?

It's pretty easy to understand. Steam takes a cut from every sale, it's not a free service. EA gets all the profit when they sell it themselves.

Anyone who thought that big publishers were going to use Steam forever was crazy. Anyone who can get away with not using it will stop using it.
Thats pointing out the obvious. The Steam service takes a "cut" from every sale. But they host the product, put measures in place to control piracy (though I swear most of the torrents I see come from Steam), market the game, and much more. Steam is actually a pretty awesome service for companies to use. An article that was on Wired.com basically said that Steam cost more to sell on than a brick and mortar company, but the cost was actually lower over all because of so many other services that Steam cuts out of the loop.

The only marketing Steam does of a game is through Steam itself. Games still have 50 million dollar marketing budgets for a reason.

Steam markets across the board, actually. They dont advertise themselves directly, but try to draw in customers for a particular game on their service. They advertise on Amazon and Google, for example. Last I read, Steam has around 70 million users that log into the service at least once a month. Forbes had more information in last months issue. I wasnt disputing that companies still need to market their game, just informing you that the Steam service has more than what you state it has and does more than you think, as well.

They're great for small guys, absolutely. For the big guys though, they will do everything they possibly can to get out from having to pay for Steam since they have enough power to do so.

It just shouldn't besurprisingthat EA has broken away from them and that Blizzard never went near them in the first place.

Hmmm while it seems you can play for awhile with the Sim City servers down and then later synch, you cannot change to different cities in the region (since that requires a synch with the servers) which obviates most of the cool features of an interrelated economy. Oh well, these are poor mining town kids, they don't really need education.

Is there really a reason to get industrial hard to keep workers for it and just puts out pollution
Industrial supplies materials for commercial and also allows you to sell materials globally.

I am going to try a heavy industrial/commericial city with a nearby residential city. Really need all 3 to succeed. Though I am curious how a tourist heavy town would do. From what I have seen though casinos seem to always be losing money.

Switching between regions causes the game to crash to desktop for me... not ideal.

My EA name is gallium if anyone wants to invite me to something.

Edit: I created a public region called Shimcity

Unless you really want to play I'd wait a week on this. Everyone I've talked to has had problems.
