Got the zenfone, have to send back. Forgot how nice the nexus line really is with no crapware. Shame since spec wise the phone is great.
Was it just uninstallable bloatware or something else going on? My parents are going to be looking for new phones soon and the zenfone was one of the phones I was considering.

Fuck it pre-ordered LG G4.

Interestingly, it didn't even ask me to change my UDP plan... *shrug*. At least now if something goes sideways I have more ammo to whine to Verizon.

lots of uninstallable bloat, other than that it was a nice phone. With me being used to the Nexus line I didn't want to deal with it and since its on a corp plan I can't use custom ROMs to get rid of it.

Reminds me vanilla WoW where you could message someone certain ascii characters to make their client crash. Character encoding has to be one of the biggest headaches in programming.

This has become the major driver for me now. I went from a N4 (loved it) to an HTC One M8 (hated it) to a N6 (love it). Manufacturer and carrier bloatware is getting beyond a joke. To be fair, there were other hardware issues with the M8 (notification area of the screen dies, happened to me twice) which meant I had to get rid of it but going back to a Nexus line felt like freedom. Hyperbole maybe but that is literally how it felt.

It's like buying a computer and letting your ISP determine what OS you run and what programs can't be uninstalled. That's why I always root my phones and install a custom rom, even nexus devices. Even if I'm not doing much that requires root, I'm going to do what I want with my damn device.

I'm switching over to Google Photo from Drop Box. I had been using drop box as short term storage for pics and video before moving them to my NAS for storage. Now that google up'd the game with unlimited storage I figured to put them all in the cloud and have a secondary back up. Since we take all pictures and video with our phones once i complete the first massive upload everything else should go there automatically.

I don't use Google+, have no circles or friends there so it should be a relatively safe and private place to store photos. I've also removed the ability for them to mine my photos for chromecast and all that junk.

Wasn't the issue with Google Photo, and it sounds like you touched on it, but don't care, is that they are all on Google+? It's basically like uploading pics to Facebook everytime?

I've limited my pictures to only myself and I have no one in circles etc since I don't use Google + so not really an issue from what I can see.

Google Photos is just a subsection of Google Drive. Backups are private and photos are only shown if the user expressly permits it.

Then that's convenient. Sounds like finally a competitor to DropBox, with just as much convenience (auto-upload).

Question for iPhone people.

I found an iPhone 4S out in one of my pastures. I made a half-assed attempt to find the owner but did not succeed. The thing charges and powers up but the screen is too smashed to unlock it. I just looked up how to replace the screen and the $40 kit to do it on iFixIt and I am thinking about doing it just because it sounds fun and it would be a way to replace the dying ipod that plugs into my alarm clock. My question is though, it's currently in airplane mode. If I take it out will the previous owner be able to locate it and wipe/reclaim it somehow? I am willing to give it back to them, but not after I spend $40 repairing it. Is there some way I can reset it/remove the sim card and make it "mine" or will there always be the chance that they will find it somehow and brick/wipe it? I'm not interested in activating it as a phone, but I would like to just use it around the house on wifi as a glorified ipod touch.

The blacklist or not does not matter if your not trying to activate it as a phone- you can use it as a ipod on wifi no problem- the rest depends on what they have done with it... but the standard "wipe" requires you to log into the current apple id account of the phone- I am sure there are ways around this, but I do not know of them.... that being said- assuming it has no lock screen- and you can get into it, and you DONT have the apple ID info to reset / wipe the phone- even on wifi they can do a find my iPhone... if they turned that feature on- I think 4s was before the default-on setting...but the user could have still turned it on.

The lock screen just says "slide to unlock" so I assume there is no password or anything. I might do it anyway, maybe I will find some porn or something

You'll.only run into a problem if it's got find my iPhone enabled and is on a newer version of iOS.

Even then I'm sure the internet has found a way past that.
