As a computer engineer myself the idea of it is cool but just reading the last page indicates to me it's not for me.

I just ordered an s26 ultra. Been getting pixels for years but the last two my wife had bricked themselves so fuck them.
Speaking of, I just got my Pixel 11 Pro XL yesterday. It is super convenient that nowadays they just copy everything over and the new phone is exactly like the old phone, I have to say.

However, that now leaves me feeling like nothing changed, and why did I upgrade from an 8 to an 11? I mean, I know the answer, mostly the camera, and maaaaaaybe it will be a little snappier, but unless I buy something like a fold, I barely notice that I got a new phone. Yay?

I'll probably notice when the AI shit starts trying to inject itself into everything I use the phone for, but let's hope I'm wrong.

To be honest I usually just upgrade when my phone starts to lose charge or get hot or there's some deal. They had a trade in deal so that's the only reason I even upgraded.

My wife's pixel 3 kept overheating and calling 911. Actually had police find us at a baseball game because it called 911 without us knowing.

Yeah, since I use their network (Google Fi) they gave me like $600 off or some shit, and then another $250 if my trade in is fine, so it only came to like $30 a month for two years. I spend more on stupid shit Lanx recommends on Amazon, so after wishing my camera were a little better after going to Alaska last month I figured why not? Otherwise, I went from a 2 to an 8 the last time, which actually felt like an upgrade.

Until my S22 ultra dies I'm not changing. No reason to.

Speaking of getting hot: I had a Note 4 (the one right before the one that exploded and was banned on flights) that you could replace the battery easily. We went to SF for a week vacation and it got so hot I could not stand to hold it. Soon as we landed we traded in.

I’ve been trying to ride out my iPhone XS Max for as long as possible, but more and more it’s starting to chug just doing basic shit at times and is starting to get annoying. Also annoying that I can’t seem to find my preferred screen protectors for it anymore, but I guess the thing is pretty old, now…

Also, fuck my brother for convincing my family to get iPhone 3s as our first smart phones. Have felt like I’m just stuck in Apple land ever since, since swapping out now would be fucking annoying.

For what it's worth peeps, I work in construction and my Android phone has gorilla glass (not sure what the exact type is called now) and I have not used a screen protector in over a decade. My 2022 phone has zero scratches/cuts. I know Apple likes to make their shit out of precious metals so it can shatter/break but mine is plain ol' tough ass plastic and I'm a happy person.

you should upgrade anyway, my wife upgraded her workphone xs, a year ago b/c apple discontinued support for it to a 16, then she upgraded her personal phone to a 17

it's so much fucking easier to travel w/ her now that everything is usbc

I swapped from apple to android around the iPhone 5 era and the only truly annoying thing was at the time all the group chats I had were tied to iMessage and moving them to RCS or whatever was a nightmare. You had to like deregister yourself from iMessage or something. It was gay as shit. Not sure if that's still a thing.

I have an aunt that insists on making group chats with iMessage. Being on Android the messages come through on sms and I have no idea who anyone is and it's just a nightmare. The rest of the family uses Facebook messenger which works perfectly but she talks to her daughters on iMessage so as far as she knows that's the only thing that exists.

Not picking on your aunt but she may not know any other way. I had my mom set up to read books on google books and a few years later I found out she read them on her little phone. I told her she can read the same book on her tablet and swap back and forth and she looked at me like I had 2 heads. Some peeps are just scared of tech.

I have a Samsung s20 and it did the overheating thing for the first time this last week. Admittedly I was in the car, it was connected to android auto, pushing waze, I was streaming media, and then hopped on a zoom call with video.... But it was still annoying when it started overheating and just closed everything I had running.

Debating if after 6 years it's time to upgrade finally. Don't know if I want to stay on the Samsung train, or hop back to the Pixel (where I was before the S20)... And I keep hearing the privacy siren's song of Graphene OS......

You have it mounted to the windshield? My work apple phone (dont' recall ##) would do that 100% of the time I had it windshield mounted for maps. And it would say overheat and shut down , usually while I'm in the middle lane of 215 and don't know what exit I need.

No, it was sitting down on the console, so not in the full Texas sun. (i.e. August in Texas). And the Waze+stream+occasional zoom combo platter is my usual modus operandi when I'm on the road for work. Which is why this time was kinda jarring. But like I said, it's a 6 year old phone, although the one time I had to take it in for repair was when an unlucky angle when it slipped out of my pocket landing one the one pebble on the pavement around me shattered screen. Not only did they replace the screen, since it was over 4 years old I paid $30 extra and they replaced the battery.

Luckily, my last month at my old job ended up being a very lucrative month financially (some massive surprise deals landed) so the comm check I'm going to get in a week will be big enough cash up front for a new phone won't be anything too terrible.
