Rafael is getting ripped apart by Ronaldo. Then again, many would struggle against him.

Cracking game so far

Varane got gifted by being allowed to stay on the pitch after that "foul". Easily could have been a red, should have been a foul since he was miles off the ball and Welbeck was through.

Yeah, was pretty cynical foul it was

Pretty even second half so far. 1-1 will be a dodgy result for Utd I feel. I can't see Real not scoring at Old Trafford based on their attacking performance so far.

Brilliant result for Manc - they would have taken that in a heartbeat prior to kickoff, and especially at half time. Next leg should be terrific as well. Can't see Manc holding RM scoreless at OT, so they'll both be really going for it. Khedira was great today imo.

Yeah, was a great game

The return leg at OT will be who can score the most goals as I certainly can't see Utd shutting Real out

I think I was pretty accurate in my forecast as ManU couldn't initiate anything through Jones or Carrick, everything was from Rio or Evans launching balls up the channels with knock-ons being the creator of all their chances. RM should have been able to give themselves enough cushion to not sweat the OT game but credit De Gea for some great saves.

Not that Jones is on a Pepe level for me yet but I can't stand watching him play. He's basically a goon at this point offering nothing other than throwing his body into the other players and hoping he doesn't get enough fouls to get sent off during the game.

Great game in having a lenient ref that let him get away with shoving players off the ball sure, these weren't 50/50 shoulder challenges. But if you want a player that offers nothing but that and enables your MF to be overrun and the play dictated by the other team the whole game then I'm all for it.

SAF ruined Phil Jones last season when he moved him up from CB. He had a couple nice runs up field and suddenly everyone thinks he's a future virtuoso. The charge on Di Maria was a blatant penalty, among a host of other similar challenges. I loved how like 2 minutes later Arbeloa gets penalized for the same thing. No idea how Jones didn't get a yellow. Varane stayed on because there was a covering defender only a couple yards away.

Overall, good game. Looking forward to the return leg.

Likewise, poor calls from the referee against Uniteds favour. Furthering Jones - his entire job was to keep Ronaldo quiet. You have to have a man on that guy, no matter what team you are, otherwise he scores too freely. He still managed to get the goal from some insane leap, that man is so good. But Jones should probably be exempt from critique in regards to helping build the forward play. Sure, a world class midfield could do both (Keane?), but... I'll forgive him for now, he's been doing the job over Bale, then Fellaini and now Ronaldo. It's a bit of a new role for the lad since his return.
It would be wiser look at the link up play between Welbeck, Rooney, Kagawa and Carrick. Carrick had a good game, Kagawa - well I missed a portion of first half so I'll reserve comment other than he was a bit easy to push over, but Rooney? Poor. Worked hard, but, didn't give us the outlet required to get the ball forward - much like you saw from him in WC2010 when everyone slated him. Welbeck on other hand worked hard and coupled it with passing tidily, help build play AND score a goal.
I'd say SAF is totally justified with Jones's current role and maybe he'll get better in possession. Will he do it again at OT? United could be far more adventurous behind their home crowd, SAF has bottled it on a few occasions (most recently against City at Eastlands last season), but with a full squad of defenders present he could perhaps rely on them more.

Wording was a bit off. Meant that SAF fucked up moving Jones forward. He has a promising CB with attacking potential and ended up with something more resembling Nigel de Jong with worse ball skills.

Carrick had a good game.
At what? Sitting on top of Rio? Basically two things decided this game; 1) DeGea playing out of his mind and 2) Benzema and Higuain being utter shit at this point. We're all homers here but sometimes it amazes me with what people come up with.

..
3) United missing their clear cut chances
4) Ref being a total cock
5) Jones containing Ronaldo well
6) Rooney played poorly in critical moments (his job was to track Coentrao) and failed getting things forward

Carrick wasn't a deciding factor in the game no, just, he simply had a good game. There isn't much room to criticise him, and I don't see how this amazes you but when he is assured in control of the ball, passing and linking up forward attacks, keeping tabs on RM's CMF (Ozil) hes doing his job well. As we both know, Jones wasn't exactly partnering him in midfield so he didn't have an automatic outlet. Why does SAF choose Jones? He's got a good knack for niggly tackles and doesn't mind going in hard. Would it have worked if say Cleverly/Anderson took that role? Whilst the midfield possession stats would have been much better, maybe they would be too slow to get on Ronaldos shadow and perhaps he would have skinned them.
Surely you can see the bigger picture here.

I guess you're good for a laugh Pks, thanks for that.

In the shitty world of LFC, not sure there is any point in watching any more games this season as they'll be basically playing out the string at this pace. They need to win 11 of their last 12 to get to the historical CL point total requirement and on current form you'd have to mark that as 100 to 1 odds even with the schedule being pretty generous. Not sure why people are surprised about the Zenit result, they're a good team with Witsel/Hulk and to think we'll score 3 vs. them at Anfield is also long odds. Basically 2 more losses and they're playing for Europa and who really gives a shit at that point.

Who really cares as long as you're winning. I'm sure Gooner fans long for the day of RvP carrying them to 4th at this point. Now that Suarez has finally gone cold LFC is basically fucked unless Sturridge goes on an amazing run.

Listen to you all and your first world problems!

Forest are trying to outdo QPR in the laughing stock stakes, they fired a bunch more of the backroom/executive team this week. I believe the only people left other than the players are the owners, the manager and a tea lady.

All those times in the last couple of seasons I was asking for a middle eastern takeover. Beware of what you wish for and all that >.<
