What is this absolute horseshit everybody's talking about?

1769142085743.png

that's a pretty weak nit pick. This is post burn. The federation fell apart. the lact of currency was because trek was in a post scarcity society. After something called "the burn" there's probably some scarcity. Backed up by the fact that the woman in the beginning was starving and they were stealing rations.

Based on the rest of what I saw, that's probably all from bad writers not knowing the source material. But so far it would be consistent if they wanted to show a fallen federation.

I would enjoy a show where someone eradicates the Federation, so long as it's men doing it at this point.

OK, basically...

"The burn" was a stupid plot device they introduced during ST Discovery because apparently it wasn't easy enough to ham fistedly deliver "the message" when writing in a fictitious universe that actually achieved post-scarcity and had the ability to travel easily at FTL levels. It boils down to how some kid raised on a dilithium rich world became so "empathically connected" to the mineral that when they had a breakdown seeing one of their parents die it triggered all the dilithium in the galaxy to go inert, all at once.... Breaking warp speed travel obviously, and core breaching most starships, causing the federation to break apart and the Star Trek universe to revert to looking a lot more like our world in political terms apparently... wars, famine, scarcity, the whole damn 9 yards of it. (i.e. make it easier to get back to delivering "the message")

God damn it, I feel stupider for just needing to recount that nonsense.... At this point I'm starting to finally hit the black pilled realization that the science fiction franchises I cherished as a kid have all be irrevocably broken in such a way that only burying them for a generation and then starting them over from scratch would be the only hope and I'll be dead by the time that happens, if it ever does.

I swear to all that is holy that I will go on a murderous rampage if they desecrate Stargate in this new series like ST and SW have been done.....

Oh I don't care about the currency stuff even though it's what that video was talking about. I'm just mad about the disrespect shown to the captain's chair.

And the glasses.

And the obese women at a fucking military training facility.

Trying to find an actual white man in the crowd at the academy is almost like a game of Where's Waldo. Outside of the one kinda-dickish major character, I think I saw one other one in the entire room. But I don't really care about that much, it's to be expected at this point.

The grand scheme of it is that I'm not seeing Star Trek here, I'm seeing writers (who don't know Star Trek) doing self-inserts and infantilizing both the characters/material and the audience.

Never saw this, heard it's like a 0/10 level movie. My first thought looking at the poster... is this a Mirror Universe movie? No? It's a Starfleet movie? Nu Trek really is full of horrible people who dress in black outfits and treat other people like garbage. We don't even need a Mirror Universe anymore because Nu Trek is basically indistinguishable from it. People being violent, cursing, constant judgmental behavior and angry outbursts from a bunch of narcissists that all have Main Character Syndrome.

Remember in Star Trek IV when Kirk and Spock are in the 1980's and Kirk has to explain why people in that time period curse so much (something that was nonexistent in the future). "They pretty much have to curse every other word to feel like they're getting their point across" or something like that. Kirk and Spock were from a post-cursing society with little interpersonal drama.

Well, the writers of Nu Trek sure as fuck don't remember that!

lol. I didn't see any of that. I didn't make it far in discovery. I think I saw them jump to the other universe and maybe saw them get back home.

Yeah, I got that from the words that you used. That's why I deleted them in the quote. I took no exception to that complaint.
And the glasses.
Well, ya see. Apparently the vision surgeries were all done with dilithium crystals. An ya know ... poof.
And the obese women at a fucking military training facility.
This bothers me less. We have no idea what a future society will think about body shapes. It wasn't long ago that those women would be called Rubenesque and be desirable. That shit could come back again. Especially in a post post scarcity world where people are starving again. Don't @ me with your health care science nonsense. The chancellor of the academy is 400 and something years old. People have evolved.

This is you looking for problems. The guy who recruited her is a white man. the main villian is a white man. Both of caleb's roomates are white as is his love interest. The leader of betazoid is white, in fact weren't they all white? The dr is white. There's probably a fancy name for what you're doing here, but it's like you decided this problem would exist and hyperfocused on every non white character to reinforce your hypothesis.
The grand scheme of it is that I'm not seeing Star Trek here
This was my impression too. It seems like a random sci-fi story that they put a star trek skin on.

This was supposed to be a series and got switched to a movie at some point. I watched it offshore with another random trek fan and we both liked it, but we both thought it was a series premier. So we were kind of confused during the 3rd act. And yes, that is sort of a mirror universe poster. That woman is from a mirror universe they visited in discovery.

I was mostly looking at the scene where they have all the Starfleet Academy cadets assembled in one place. One of the reviews I watched of the show said something like "finding a white guy in this academy is like Where's Waldo", so I paraphrased it. That one scene is all I was looking at. The villain and the MC's love interest chick...don't exactly count as positive white male portrayals.

Forgot about the Voyager Doctor, that's one. Cool. This is really the least of my issues, like I said, white men not being portrayed positively / at all has been a thing in so much media at this juncture that it bounces off of me. Yesterday I saw a clip of the first episode of Discovery, and noticed that the entire crew of Discovery had zero white men in it, just a huge amount of women, an Asian guy, and a couple others I can't remember. Funny thing is, when that show first aired, I don't think I even noticed this. I miss not even noticing things like that.

I pretty much despise everything about this show, so yes, I'm approaching it from a vantage point of "wow, this seems like dogshit" and working backwards from there. Pretty much everything Nu Trek that I've seen has been dogshit. I haven't seen Picard S3 or SNW and I hear both of those are actually good, so...maybe I'll give 'em a chance later.

In an IP with already established time travel they can easily retcon anything NuTrek did once Krurtzman is gone. Whether any of us will still be alive when/if that happens is another story. The best "hope" we probably have is if China's AI tools can make the Trek we want in the near future (while disregarding US IP laws).

I think you are proving Hoss' point there with 'I didn't actually watch it, but a ragebait video I watched said it, so it must be true'.

The show is terrible enough already, you don't need to invent reasons to hate it ;p

( Also, obviously there were white men in S1 discovery, starting with the captain. Straight white men are considerably rarer though )
