there was NEVER a case of sequels being even good prior to The Godfather part 2 that I can recall.

Aliens, Terminator 2, Spider-Man 2, Phantasm 2, all amazing sequels.

Empire Strikes back is still the best Star Wars. Even RotJ was great right up until the Ewoks appeared.

Robocop 2, X-Men 2, the Dark Knight, Capt America 2 Winter Soldier, Mad Max Road Warrior, Indy and the Temple of Doom, Backdoor Sluts IX, Predator 2, etc.

Right now you are thinking, what, are all these guys just fucking retarded or something? And yes. Yes they are. don't worry I got you

Blade Runner 2049 and Dune 2
Did you read Dune, by chance?

They turned Chan from a pregnant wife true believer to a #girlboss skeptic who don’t need no man.

which is wild because Dune already has a generous amount of strong female leads, they didn’t need to change a character and plot focus to add more. You’ve already got the Bene Gesserit, Lady Jessica, etc. there are probably more strong female leads than male leads in the books.

They also rewrote House Harkonnen from being tactical and draconian leaders into Disney level cartoons villains who kill their servants for fun or out of frustration. Not their commanders like Xerxes or Vader, the help. Never kill the help out of frustration. That’s like kicking a puppy.

I liked Dune Part 1. I thought it was a faithful adaptation, but Dune Part 2 was not it, chief.

Dune 2 was better than Dune 1. The actress who everybody loves is about the only negative to the movie. The first movie in the 80's changed a lot of things from the book. I still enjoyed that movie as well. I do not go to the movies to see how they compare to a book. I go to the movies to enjoy the movie if it is well done. Dune 2 was well done.

Lady jessica was a super smart political viper that turned every situation into an advantage for herself and family. She didn't smash things with her fists like hollywood wants stronk women to do.

This one

The best X-Men movies are X2, Logan, and the Deadpool trilogy.

Star Wars came out when I was six; I got to see all of these as they were released.

ROTJ was a great half of a movie, with Luke/Vader/the Emperor. The other half, with the Ewoks, was Lucas trying to sell toys. Originally IIRC correctly it was going to be Wookies but now I can't recall if that was real or just fan spec/debunked over the years.

It was taken as a given that movies (particularly after "Jurassic Park"), much like computers, would keep getting better and better.

"Imagine what movies will be like in the future!!!"

Supergirl is taking over TikTok on Saturday. The new trailer, which launched Thursday, will be served as the first video for all TikTok users in 13 territories, including the United States.

TikTok sees this as a test case that Hollywood studios can utilize to market its movies. Given the social media platform’s reach with younger users, it could mean a remarkable amount of exposure for the film, which stars 25-year-old Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the rougher around the edges cousin to Superman.

Other countries where it takes effect for Saturday are Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Australia.

Dune 2 is meh. The story is really not good when you stop and think about it.

I mean everything in the show is just setup for the battle of arrakis. It would be hard not for the payoff to be better than 4 hours of setting it up.

Part of what kills the Dune mythos for me is that in Herbert's eyes, Paul was almost exactly a JFK analogue. His glorious rise to power in the first book is supposed to be unvarnished and complete Campbell's Hero's Journey, except with the dash that charisma and messiahs turns friends into followers and what comes next is terrible. No one got that, though, and because JFK=VIETNAMTHEDEVIL!!! he wrote Dune Messiah very clearly to show that charismatic leaders can be cause bloody revolutions, as if The French/Russian/Chinese Revolutions were a product of charismatic leaders alone.

Where this affects Dune 2 is Villeneuve decided to bleed Dune Messiah into Dune 2 in part in the person of Chani, which is a big part of the reason she is so insufferable.

Herbert started writing Dune Messiah while writing Dune (1965). The plot from the beginning was always intended to be the rise and fall of Paul.

I am not saying he didn't, nor I am I saying Dune was intended as a standalone, etc. You can go back and read how shocked/disappointed he was people didn't get how people didn't see the "warning signs" with Paul in the first book, and it changed/prompted how he wrote Dune Messiah.

From Dennis:
Dennis Villeneuve said:
My guiding principles were Frank Herbert’s intentions. Specifically for [Dune], he was disappointed how people perceived the story. He felt that people misconceived Paul Atreides; that people were seeing him as a hero, where he wanted to do the opposite. So in reaction to that he wrote Dune Messiah in order to insist on the idea that Paul was a dangerous figure, and that the first book was more of a cautionary tale or more of a warning against the current charismatic leaders. Knowing that it gave me a lot of information on how to approach this second movie to make sure that I was heading toward all of Frank Herbert’s initial intentions.

From Frank:
Frank Herbert said:
I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: "May be dangerous to your health." One of the most dangerous presidents we had in this century was John Kennedy because people said "Yes Sir Mr. Charismatic Leader what do we do next?" and we wound up in Vietnam. And I think probably the most valuable president of this century was Richard Nixon. Because he taught us to distrust government and he did it by example.

Little did he know that JFK was killed, Johnson put in office, and Nixon was set up entirely by the Deep State/CIA because of Vietnam. Bene Gesserit indeed.

Also this article, which speaks to Paul being good and still losing control.

Oh boy this is something I know a bit about.

JL 1 was to introduce Steppenwolf as Darkseid’s Lt.

JL 2 was the “knightmare” scenario hinted at in BVS. Darkseid takes control of Superman or manipulates him to be evil after Lois Lane dies (pregnant with Bruce Wayne’s baby for some stupid reason).

JL3 was to be the big ending with Superfriends vs Darkseid.

Tom Clancy wrote alcoholism well with Jack Ryan struggling with it during the Sum of All Fears novel. Alcoholism can be portrayed really well, but, party girl with no consequences is not it, fam. Unless she drinks away her life or something.

JL2 probably would have had Desaad (Darkseid's other Lt) manipulating the Evil Superman and having to be stopped.

Brainiac was another big potential JL villain, and could have been the JL2 villain instead. However I think the rumor I heard at the time was that Brainiac was planned for Man of Steel 2.

Another movie that wrote alcoholism well was Doctor Sleep. The main character is in recovery from it and clearly in all kinds of pain, even if the movie doesn't really show you what led to that point. It's something he has to quietly overcome in the first act of the movie.

I’m not too educated on JFKs role in vietnam, tbh, so I appreciate you breaking it down like this.
