The fuck kind of review is this? That may be the gayest movie review I've ever seen on these forums. I'm not saying you've got no right to have the opinion the movie isn't bad (I'm not claiming otherwise and never will because I'll never watch this), but...what?
Here he was 11 minutes before posting the review

Okay-- SPOILERS -- ahead....

I have been thinking and talking with the woman I saw Supergirl with most of the day.

A real SHITTY movie can't really do that. But I am FURIOUS and convinced that they subverted and ruined the entire film in the last few minutes to make a worthless, marketing, cross-promotion.

If you give a crap about my obsessive thoughts on this-- SPOILER WARNING!!!!:

Everyone leaving the Theatre could’ve left with the feeling of personal growth, relationship growth, maybe even lesbian relationship growth, friendship, goodness, and that Supergirl is willing to cross lines. Superman never will. Instead, the feeling you get leaving the film is there was no growth just marketing.awful

The culinary equivalent would be to finish off a fresh Japanese tuna dinner with urine soaked shark meat from Iceland.

I’m so infuriated. growth, redemption, vindication, sacrifice, altruism, love, washed away for stupidity and cross-marketing.

an argument of patriarchy and defeating the “male gaze.“ Should be enough. They were very adapt at choosing not the “hot girl“ to be super girl, but the rebel girl and the sacrifice of her “goodness“ to preserve the goodness of someone she loves is a poignant and powerful ending, and I didn’t see that coming. And then they fucked it all up.

The casting and character setup were incredibly deliberate. By choosing Milly Alcock—who brought a raw, jagged, and rebellious "un-Hollywood" energy—the film set itself up to completely subvert the standard "male gaze" and the classic, sexualized tropes of female superheroes. Alcock herself even noted in press interviews that the film's beauty lay in how it refused to center itself around a man

(CosmicBookNews). [1 (), 2 (Fox News insists on being the villain in another superhero’s story), 3 (CosmicBookNews), 4 (Blood Simple (1984)), 5 (GateBuster Review: The Wasp Woman)

The sacrifice of her "goodness" was a massive thematic triumph. Kara making the conscious, harrowing decision to stab Krem in order to absorb the moral trauma and preserve the childhood innocence of Ruthye. She wasn't fighting for male approval or code-enforcement; she crossed a line out of raw, sacrificial love.

The film proved she was stronger, more resilient, and willing to carry heavier burdens than Superman ever could. Forcing her into his shadow in the final moments didn't just hurt the pacing; it actively insulted the entire feminist text the first two hours built. They built a rebel who defeated the gaze, only to force her to her knees in the final four minutes to serve a male-led franchise. It is a total narrative betrayal.

Even if you could give a shit about female empowerment or feminism or any of that crap-- Having a powerful, morally complex, rebellious woman exist autonomously in deep space after committing an execution was too terrifying for the studio. They immediately felt the need to bring her back to Earth to be supervised, anchored, and domesticated by a male authority figure-- INSULTING and STUPID!

Again, whether you give two shits about feminism or avoiding "the male gaze" what they did at the end if the film would be like ending Thelma and Louise with T&L performing felatio on police to get out of going to jail...

They really FUCKED up a potentially poignant ending for cross-marketing BULLSHIT.

There- I've shot my film critic load. It bothered me all day.

How much of this did you use an AI to help write? I feel like there's two voices in this post. You use both forms of the em dash. And who's getting five references for a post about Supergirl on an old man's forum?

IT is a review from a "male feminist ally". That is the talking point on this now, its men's fault this movie sucked. Not that they had an inexperienced DEI hire writer annd cast Down Syndrom LeeLu in the role. Should have made a fucking Power Girl movie. Thats the version of Supergirl people actually like.

Well there were definitely multiple directions they could have chosen-- The two most prominent were
1) hot chick supergirl who is competent and capable (think Linda Carter in Wonder Woman, 1970's)

or

2) the female superhero growth trajectory (with a side of female-female support with or without lesbian connotations).

They clearly chose the latter but dumped on that

Imagine putting all the plans up for either a '69 Mustang or a 72 Beetle Bug. Staring with one (probably the Mustang) and then just giving up and plopping a 1972 VW engine into whatever you had half-built already.

There was good substance/substrate and a model for #1 (The Tom King story). They kind of took a shit all over that.

I mentioned it a while back, but I think it will have better legs than people think*, just because other than The Odyssey, there aren't any other action options until Spider-Man in 30 days.

If you're bored and want to get out of the heat (especially with the holiday weekend), this is essentially the only option if you don't want a kids movie.

*Speaking of which, Mando and Grogu is over $175M, for the same reason (no action options other than Masters of the Universe, which wasn't much of a threat). Which is still worse than all the Marvel movies from last year (for example) and all past Star Wars movies, but better than the utter disaster we assumed from the opening weekend.

Alright.. I feel like I need to post...

yeah. I was almost tempted to go see this... but then saw Superman and gave up any hope.

So, I've worked on a number of versions of Supergirl over the years. red lantern, post benoit tv show. pre lantern. my Avatar is the short run with Emanuela Lupachino doing the art. That was with Supergirl joining a interstellar superhero academy.

Supergirl has a long messy history. like insane. Both Kara, and Linda. And then Powergirl herself on top of that...
PG is pretty popular in fandom yes. unknown outside it. they'd mess PG up too..

Kara spent most of the "modern" comics dead. She was a silver age character and her core storylines with it, are very silly.
Kara's biggest known storyline is Crisis on Infinite Earths. 1985. the year after the old Supergirl movie bombed. and it needs to be said, Crisis on Infinite Earths rebooted DC comics, and basically everything everyone knowns as DC Canon, is post crisis. Super pre-crisis stuff gets brought back constantly. but, league of shadows, Lex-corp, etc all post crisis.

Kara of course famously died in Crisis on Infinite earths. She stayed dead until 2005. Brought back edgelord style.
this version of her is not well liked.
rebooted again for nu52. This is the red lantern version.
Rebooted again after the tv show to match tv show.

Supergirl:women of tomorrow reboots again.. 2021. WELLLL past DC going woke/broke. tom king. praised by woke critics. didnt sell that great really.
2025 rebooted again. Trans artist Sophie Campbell..

1994 Matrix. Psuedo supergirl reboot. turns out like Death of superman, and the fake Superman's. this lookalike was not really Kara. Matrix. a shapeshifting construct.
1996- Linda lee. merges with Matrix to become a new Supergirl. This version is a hometown girl, trying to be a superhero. Earth-born angel. her storylines are insane. just pure coke.

DC animated universe.
without question, the most popular version of Supergirl. A mix of Linda Lee, and silver age Supergirl.

This is without a doubt how Supergirl should be portrayed.

Silver age supergirl. 15-17 year old girl, from Argos. been on Earth for 3months-2 years. Knowns nothing about Human culture, history, or childhoods. everything she knows should be surface level. Starfire from Teen Titans cartoon is a great example of what Supergirl should be like. or, Miss Martian from the more recent Titans show. everything she knows is from TV. constantly talking about things from back home.

inexperienced and dangerously so. this was a big thing with silverage supergirl. 15 year old girl, living in "a world of cardboard". Superman was keeping her hidden because she could accidently hurt someone, until she learned to control her powers better. She didnt grow up on Earth with them, like he did.

But at the same time, she's a Tourist and just in constant awe of the world around her.

Nu52 and on did try to do this a bit. but went a bit TOO foreign, and angsty. Not being able to speak English, full alien kill humans. Red Lantern "my home is goooone" and so on.
you do this, but you have to have the character WANT to fit in, and join humanity.

They started to come around on this, having her get a secret identity, and become room mates with Silver banshee.. but TV Reboot killed that.

Mike Maihack had her perfect.

Gun and whoever he hired to write this were never going to do a standard classic Supergirl. He would have been better off making a lobo movie given his track record. I felt he had the Golden Touch right up until the second season of Peacemaker. His animated stuff is actually been okay and the recent Superman movie was fine but his style just does not fit serious characters. His Jam is taking detier guys and adding depth to them.

Aside from personal bias, the main reason I saved they should have done Power Girl is because she's the most interesting version of the character. She's not as powerful as Superman but she's actually a trained warrior with a warrior code and sense of Honor. In the comics she also plays well as a straight man to other characters like in her miniseries with Harley Quinn as an example. I could have seen a movie here where she wants to lay down the law but she's just too hardcore to be easy to let loose on Earth so they give her the job of keeping Lobo in line and that's your whole movie right there essentially a buddy cop movie with Power Girl and Lobo playing off of each other the entire time. I'm not sure who you would cast exactly but it would have to be someone who was really physically fit and able to do the believable female badass without completely being a fucking girl boss. And maybe that is the problem and why they didn't do it, but it seems like we used to have actresses like that out there. I think someone like a peak era Jerry Ryan or or Emily Blunt would have been perfect in that kind of role.

The issue with this movie is not James Gunn though as the studio had the responsibility falls on them. This movie failed because it picked the wrong actress and the wrong writer, then made a subversive girl boss movie that is almost a decade too late. Side note maybe people will stop casting these stupid bitches who are in Game of Thrones and the spin-offs finally because almost none of them have proven to be worth a shit outside of that franchise.
