why would I have an axe to grind with shows i've never watched/barely even heard of?

I'm sure they were the most popular shows ever on the CW which is like first place at the special olympics. Actually the CW era is basically right before the Man of Steel era, so kids who watched that prolly still relate to Snyderverse more than Reeves superman. idk i'll take your word for it that kids actually watched that shit.

The CW was the merger of the WB and UPN....UPN was the only channel out of all 3 of those actually around when I was a kid and it was the EBT channel. You know, the BET channel for those who couldnt afford cable and had to watch broadcast TV. I think it was channel 69 lol. Yeah so again, don't know anyone who actually watched that channel. WB was like, the wayans brothers and Sister, sister? Never watched either network, definitely didn't watch them when they merged. Who knew they pivoted to white people programming with a bunch of superman shows?

The point was and remains, WB abandoned superman on the big screen (IE its place of cultural relevance) for nearly 40 years, they were embarrassed by him I guess, and multiple generations of kids missed out on ever giving a shit about him. Batman (and his rogues gallery) are the only characters of any value under DC, as far as anyone in my generation or later is concerned.

My brother told me this morning via text 'James Gunn did a great job, not your typical superman movie.' so I DL the CAM copy floating around. He was right it's not typical. Superman is typically you know, super. This was hot shit. I quit about half way.
What a fucking train wreck.

So i just googled them.

Dean Cain was only superman for 4 years? and that's literally like the only thing he's ever done, plus some hallmark christmas movies. I only know the name because he gets shit on for being conservative on twitter. Kinda like James Woods or Kevin Sorbo.

Smallville was on the air for 10 fucking seasons?? And i couldnt tell you the name of a single person on it. It's never come up in any media/pop culture/anything. Hell even Brandon Routh who was a flash in the pan in superman returns, and is more famous for being a gay cum dumpster for Justin Long's character in Zack and Mirri, at least is mentioned in any superman media. I had to wikipedia who was supeman for 10 fucking years on CW and turns out that's pretty much all he's ever done, lol. I think he runs a car wash now or something? last mention of him is getting a DUI earlier this year.

Here's your more famous Superman:

Entire generation of kids in the 1990s was raised on Superman TAS and Batman TAS cartoons. They were HUGE at the time.

Wasn't there a pretty extensive Krypton scene in Man of Steel? I remember Russel Crowe getting a lot of screen time.

You'd have to be a complete fucking moron to say you don't know Superman's origin story.

I'd be shocked if Superman: Legacy (which is a terrible title, what legacy does a newish hero in his first movie have) hits Man of Steel's unadjusted $291M domestic (to say nothing of the inflation adjusted value) - it probably won't beat Sinners' ~$280M, and may not even top the ~$270M? Jurassic Park 37 ends up at.

Which WB may be fine with as a loss leader for their new franchise, but like everywhere else, if they can't keep costs in check for the followups, this cinematic universe will be just as short as the last. Off the top of my head, only Supergirl is actually in production for the new DCU, so WB may well be keeping an eye on Superman's (box office) returns before finalizing the budgets there. (The Batman 2 (speaking of titles that don't work) isn't part of the DCU.)

Note that global box office returns are complicated, because the % of the ticket price that actually goes back to the movie producers is less than the US. Hell, even in the US, that % varies by week - historically it was 60% the first week, 55% the next, and 50% for weeks three on. So movie X getting $50M internationally isn't the same as it getting $50M in the US for a premiere, nor is it the same as getting $50M in week four. A dollar is not a dollar everywhere or everywhen.

Batman TAS yes, never heard of Superman having an animated series. Xmen on fox saturday mornings, batman was weekdays iirc. There was also a spiderman animated series too. never even heard of superman having one except maybe some campy superpals and friends from the 70s? Was that a thing, or did southpark just invent it to make fun of him?

you'd have to be pretty retarded to not read a single post and argue with something nobody said.

I said, for the record, that man of steel was the only origin story that most people know because most people weren't old enough to watch the 1978 superman and they didn't bother redoing his origin story until 2013 in Man of Steel. if you want to make a movie today that completely deviates from the man of steel version of superman you need to do an origin story because he isn't popular enough to go 50 years between origin stories. He's not fucking batman, nobody gives a shit about superman.

Superman animated series was part of a big WB thing. First came Batman TAS, then Superman TAS. They created a newer Batman series with updated cartoon style, and paired it with Superman TAS to become the Batman/Superman TAS hour which eventually led into Justice League, followed by Justice League Unlimited. You can squeeze Batman Beyond in there somewhere as well. It was a whole Bruce Timm superverse thing.

Superman TAS was really popular and set Clancy Brown as the best Lex Luthor ever.

People know the one girl from Smallville because of the sex cult thing and forget the other one because she was so bad they literally removed the Chun Li movie from her credits on imdb.

I'd forgotten all about the Superman on VHS I got probably from some Scholastic catalog in elementary school. Born in 79, I wore this tape out. I can't remember much about it now, bit I recognize some of the scenes from this, so looks like it was a collection from the 40s.

True, Fox had the Saturday morning cartoons locked down in the 1990s with their major Marvel series like X-Men and Spiderman. Superman TAS was on WB i think, and the rest of WB lineup wasnt very strong and the syndication for WB wasnt as widespread as it was for Fox. But those Superman TAS cartoons had same animation style as Batman TAS and were very highly regarded. They were right up there with X-men, Spiderman, Batman TAS, etc.

Yeah, chick that played Lana was forgettable and terrible often no matter what she did. However,

Not to mention this show has been in perpetual syndication. I think it's on Amazon Prime even today.

Was the best part of that movie. I'd watch an entire series set in that universe with those characters. Although my first thought at the end on first watch was "uh oh, Zack Snyder made Superman's dad a bigger badass and a more compelling character than Superman, that might prove to be an issue..."

Welcome to the club. I quit after ~45min, couldn't watch that crap (no, I'm not referring to video quality :p) any longer. Truth, justice and the American way, second only to Israel, and now third only to stupid jokes. As a Pedowood movieman once said: It's so dense, every single image has so many jokes going on.
Also, props to Sylas for still fighting the good fight ;p. I just voted with my wallet, and now I'm awaiting the next franchise reboot.

I, like everyone under the age of 62 and not yet collecting social security, never watched the fucking christopher reeves superman movies. Don't give a shit. That was nearly 50 fucking years ago. They were well before our time. As a character, he was relevant enough to get an honorable mention in pop culture, but no where near something like say, Star Wars. This will also blow your mind, I didn't watch those films until the 90s when I was a teenager.
This is bizarre. You just have some weird antipathy for superman and are trying to project it on everyone else.

OR youre Gen Z or something? Either way, its best not to assume the rest of the world shares you unusual views.

Most of us saw those movies repeatedly as kids. Superman has been the most famous superhero, the archetype for all other superheroes, for our entire lifetime.
