I don't know anyone in this day and age who plays video games as one of their primary hobbies who doesn't game on both PC and console. There are certain major genres of games that you just simply cannot get on one or the other. You cant get most of the major sports games on a computer, and you cant get RTS/strategy/ARPG games on a console(yet).
I haven't owned a console in years, since owning a PS1 and before that having a Sega/cd/32x monstrosity. Mind you I generally dislike console sports games and I don't think I have even touched anything like that since Madden and an NHL game back around '94.

Anyone who loves videos games, and limits themselves to just one or the other is really missing out.
That may be true, but as a consumer I don't feel that I should have to buy just about every system out there just so I can play most/all of the good games that exist. But as we all know this isn't about selling games, it's about selling consoles - if it was about selling games then these companies wouldn't be so quick to restrict so many games to single platforms exclusively.

That said, I accept that I wont be able to play every game that Sean or msbehavn or whoever the fuck else is creaming themselves about in IRC, just as I'm sure Nintendo accepts that they'll not see monies from the pure PC gamer crowd since they have so many consumers who will buy every product they make, even if it is only for a single title, that they can afford to give no fucks.

I will say though, this is all from a sampling of adult gamers. I have no idea what your average 15 year old kid is doing nowadays. We're all in our 30s and 40s with enough disposable income to have computers and multiple consoles.
My groups of friends are in the same age category, but what I tend to see is either high end PCs with a single (rarely used) console, or what is normally a non-gaming PC but multiple console systems. I don't think I know anyone that invests in gaming computers to actively play PC games with, while also buying and playing multiple consoles as well. I'm sure that those people are out there, but everyone I can think of that I know that plays games on PCs, actually do play PC games at least 90% of the time and usually use a console only when friends come over, because to them consoles are for the most part redundant. I think this applies even more to people that play MMOs, as so much of their free time is spent in those MMOs that they don't give consoles a second thought.

Im sure there is a legitimate reason as to why they havent done the following. But I wish the console makers would just design their consoles Operating System to be an Application platform thats able to be used on a PC... (or a mac
rolleyes.png
). I would much rather spend 100-150 bucks on something that I can put on my PC then keep up with the ever rising costs of Consoles AND a PC. I did just that with this last batch of consoles and Ill probably never buy another console again, now. I would much rather just keep my PC at or very close to the top of whats available Hardware wise than buy the PS4, Xbox720 and future Wii.

You mean like the very believable rumor that the next Xbox is going to be running a version of Windows 8 and use the Microsoft Store?

That pretty much destroys the whole benefit of consoles to begin with, being that developers can make games knowing exactly what users' specs are.

Most of the games that I can think of that I have played or at least thought about playing were cross platform. In general, with a couple quick searches.. I found that only about 1 out of every 10 games made are exclusive to a specific console. Not that your excuse isnt valid, but if that many games are going to be cross platform... I would rather the money be spent on development rather than coding for multiple platforms.

I would say that the rumor with the next gen xbox being a Windows 8 Console is cool, but I somehow feel like a person is going to have to own an xbox to play an Xbox Specific title. -- Relating to both of your replies: if the Xbox and the PC became one in the same through Windows, is that a bad thing? Hoping for the best of course.

Yea, this was what the Vita/PS3 did to an extent and something I'd love as well, but I don't think that's what that rumor means if it's true.
I don't own a Vita, but it's my understanding that most games, in order to play it on both systems, requires buying the game for both? I know MLB The Show required the PS3 version AND the Vita version. Talking about investing over $100 in software to play 1 game on both systems. If Microsoft goes that route to push cross-platform gaming between a Windows PC and Xbox 720, it'll be a massive, massive failure.

If I can buy 1 game and play it on both, sign me up
If I have to buy 2 copies of the game, they can piss right off.

Not all the games are like that. Some games, can't remember what Sony calls it...Cross buy or some shit. Buy one version get both for the cost of one. I have a vita but sold my ps3 since I never played it.

Think they've already abandoned those programs after they couldn't get 3rd parties to go along, and now can't even get them to make games in general for the handheld. Their Smash Brothers clone you got a free Vita version for buying it for PS3, and like the link above showed there was a discount if you bought a PS3 + Vita bundle of The Show 12.... then they did neither of these for The Show 13. Vita titles are moving so few units that the people that want these titles would buy them anyways, so little reason to discount/give away.

Could be wrong though, and it's just because it seems like the Wii U and the Vita are competing for fewest games released in a year.

At this point they appear to be content with people starting to see the Vita as just a PS4 accessory that also has a few games, perhaps with the hope that 3rd parties will realize it exists later.

Pinball Arcade gives you both copies of the game which is pretty nice. They did have a deal for MLB: The Show last year which I think it was $70-80 if you wanted both versions of the game. I'm surprised to hear they didn't do it again this year.

Probably the craziest thing I've heard regarding most of this was the quote: PS4 and Xbox are going to get close to computer graphics!

Like wait, which graphics? What is this...I don't even...

Like high end gaming machine graphics. Obviously that was the implication...if you were truly confused by that I have some investment opportunities in Nigeria to discuss with you.

Except the high end is constantly getting higher, and most games are made with console specs in mind anyways. So, high end gaming *now*? Great, fantastic. I'll just upgrade my shit.

And they still won't get close to what that guy did with skyrim and that crazy rig of his. It wasn't confusion so much as it was the idea that you can get close to a relatively constantly evolving machine, which means dick all in the long run since games are being held back by console specs.

Edit: And honestly, I don't even mean graphically. I'm looking at you, stupid fucking control layouts.

I think the ones in any danger in the short term is the handhelds because of tablets and cell phones. But I do not think that tablets and cell phones will ever outcompete the consoles and PCs at least not in the short term. What I do see is in the future some sort of docking system for either the tablet or cell phone which directly hooks up to your tv or monitor with blue tooth controllers mice and keyboards. Then the PC and the consoles will definitely be in danger. I see this as 5-10 yrs away but it will happen.

Well, the one thing the new consoles have going for them is that they don't have to push graphics past 1920x1080(1080p) resolution at all. I'm assuming that neither console will support 4K gaming resolutions. It's pretty easy anymore to play games at 1080p on max settings with nowhere near top of the line hardware on a PC.

The only question that matters -- will the new consoles have anti-aliasing? If not, then who the fuck cares if the polygon count or texture size is close to or equal to PC's. No anti-aliasing = shit graphics despite how pretty it may look otherwise.
