I haven't owned a console in years, since owning a PS1 and before that having a Sega/cd/32x monstrosity. Mind you I generally dislike console sports games and I don't think I have even touched anything like that since Madden and an NHL game back around '94.I don't know anyone in this day and age who plays video games as one of their primary hobbies who doesn't game on both PC and console. There are certain major genres of games that you just simply cannot get on one or the other. You cant get most of the major sports games on a computer, and you cant get RTS/strategy/ARPG games on a console(yet).
That may be true, but as a consumer I don't feel that I should have to buy just about every system out there just so I can play most/all of the good games that exist. But as we all know this isn't about selling games, it's about selling consoles - if it was about selling games then these companies wouldn't be so quick to restrict so many games to single platforms exclusively.Anyone who loves videos games, and limits themselves to just one or the other is really missing out.
That said, I accept that I wont be able to play every game that Sean or msbehavn or whoever the fuck else is creaming themselves about in IRC, just as I'm sure Nintendo accepts that they'll not see monies from the pure PC gamer crowd since they have so many consumers who will buy every product they make, even if it is only for a single title, that they can afford to give no fucks.
My groups of friends are in the same age category, but what I tend to see is either high end PCs with a single (rarely used) console, or what is normally a non-gaming PC but multiple console systems. I don't think I know anyone that invests in gaming computers to actively play PC games with, while also buying and playing multiple consoles as well. I'm sure that those people are out there, but everyone I can think of that I know that plays games on PCs, actually do play PC games at least 90% of the time and usually use a console only when friends come over, because to them consoles are for the most part redundant. I think this applies even more to people that play MMOs, as so much of their free time is spent in those MMOs that they don't give consoles a second thought.I will say though, this is all from a sampling of adult gamers. I have no idea what your average 15 year old kid is doing nowadays. We're all in our 30s and 40s with enough disposable income to have computers and multiple consoles.
