I actually think that was a good definition of phyrric victory - as it turns out, the winner of the blu-ray war got to have the market take a shit on them. I'd be amazed if they ever break even on the blu-ray war front.

Though I don't have any real grasp on the numbers. Computers and shit still ship with disc drives, if they manage to become the standard there I imagine they can still come out in the black with it eventually. Just not in the way they initially planned or nearly as lucratively.

Their plan to win the blueray/hd war definately worked so I am guessing they at least came out even for the lost early PS3 sales
No. Sony is currently $5 billion down on the PS3. It's only now that the PS3 is making them consistent profit. It won't be nearly enough to offset the early losses, though.

Yup, agreed.

The PS3 cost Sony $5 billion in pure losses, and it also caused them to lose a ton of marketshare (155 million PS2s sold; around 77-80 million PS3s sold to date). It's one of the biggest console bombs the videogame industry has had.

I doubt winning the blu-ray/hd-dvd war will be enough to offset these two huge setbacks.

Heh, the absurd R&D of the PS3 is definitely one of the stupidest, biggest mistakes that someone in the game industry has ever made. CELL was such a god awful move that fucked them right out of the gate with how terrible it was to program for and how much it drove the PS3's price up.

I don't think Blu-ray was a mistake though, a ton of PS3s were sold because it was the best Blu-ray player out there and it also played games. It's also one of the best things about the PS3. I think that even with Blu-ray included they could have sold it at a decent price if they had gone with a more normal hardware setup for the rest of it. CELL's cost (and downsides) just fucked them too much.

There really wasn't a format war to begin with either, it was decided before it even began due to the number of studios that were behind Blu-ray. The vast majority of the movie studios were backers of Blu-ray to begin with and only a small handful were behind HD-DVD at all.

It is important to note that Sony has a transition policy for its console, both in age groups and in geographical location. The PS1 sold for years to children and emerging markets after the PS2 launched. The same was true for the PS2 after the PS3 launched and the same will be true for the PS3 once the PS4 will be available. The PS3 will probably not have reached PS2 numbers when its production is stopped in five or six years, but keep in mind that when the PS3 was launched in the US, the PS2 was at around 110 million sold globally, so the PS3 could reach about 130 million when all is said and done.

Just think how bad PS3 sales would have been if it didn't have a Blu-Ray player in it. Sony might be out of the console business right now.

Yep and it's only going to get more stream/download dependent. I can't remember the last time I read a bluray device.

I think 130 million seems incredibly optimistic. Sony would have to sell another 50 million PS3s to hit that figure. I can't see them managing that.

I don't think consoles will be too popular in emerging markets going forwards, either. Most people in developing countries seem to be playing games on smartphones/tablets and on PCs in internet cafes. I can't see consoles selling well in those parts of the world.

So after not using my Xbox for over a year and trying to reup my Live sub to Gold... Jesus fuck. Why does the payment shit never work? Wouldn't work on the Xbox itself, desktop, laptop, or cell phone (even turned off Wi-Fi for this one). No dice.

no illumiroom/projector as per the ces vid for nextbox? perhaps then as an addon?...
That was a MS Research proof-of-concept, I'm not expecting that to be part of the next Xbox as much as I'd love for that to be the case.

If a framework or something was available to consumers and developers allowing for that kind of development with the hardware, even better.
I remember the original announcement said it would be coming after the release of the next console. Not included with.
Some more/rumors about this today:

Their system is complete shit.

My credit card finally expired in their system after years. My email address had changed as well. It was a total cluster fuck trying to get it fixed. I couldn't verify anything because of the wrong email address so they had me change it then I had to wait 30 days or something retarded like that to make account changes. Then when I went to update the billing they kept trying to charge the expired card instead of the new one, which I couldnt' delete because their system wouldn't let me. Took about a week longer for the system to finally recognize the new default payment type.

I'm sure if Microsoft was a 14 year old boy they'd find some way to fuck up a wet dream.

Not when I can go to Redbox and grab a Blu-ray movie for $2 compared to $5.99 for an HD equivalent on Amazon, iTunes, or Comcast Pay per view. If I watch 60 movies a year, (Totally made up number) that's $200+ savings per year minimum. And that's not even watching 5 movies a month. Plus for those who like bonus content, I have not seen that at all in the streaming world. Plus we aren't getting loss-less audio with HD streams or DTS-HD MA. So those that want the full experience with a movie and have good movie theaters in their house, will not be happy with streamed content until that changes at a minimum.

Overall, the theater experience on Blu-Ray eats streaming alive.
