One of the things I like about the Cowboys bloggers over at SB Nation is that a couple of them do a really good job of putting things into perspective, essentially comparing current Cowboys players to their contemporaries around the league. Usually by combining stats gathered via PFF, PFR and other places to paint a larger picture that doesn't just reinforce a viewpoint. One of them is some sort of math guru and yesterday he
penned an articleabout "Elite" qbs and how that perception has changed over the years.
Anyway, PFR has a system that removes the "era" equation and defines a QB based upon how good he was relative to the other QBs of that time, taking data from 1955 up until now as long as they played at least 40 games and had over 800 pass attempts.
Top of the overall list is Rodgers but he's got a lot of time left in this league so that might change. Next four are, in order, Young, Montana, Staubach, and Dawson. Which just reinforces how good the 49ers had it during that stretch. But if you remove the retired players from the list, the top five is Rodgers, Manning, Brady, Romo, Brees. 6th is Wilson. So while it's only 3 years of data to work with, but at least by one standard Wilson is up there with the best in the league. In other words... pay the man.
