No, quite different. I've only read the first two books but they take place within our solar system alone so far. This is mostly humans vs. humans it's a bit more but don't want to give away important plot points.

Just finished the 1st book
what i gather, there is no real timeline for the books, but to have it set only 200 years into the future doesn't seem right at all.

The detective is such a downer, and TV has a low tolerance for horrible people with no redeeming qualities.
i thought of him as House.

On the 2nd book now. So far the series seems like it can transition well to TV, hope they manage to pull it off.

...but of course they are probably going to spend half a season on the zombies going after the people in the Casino instead of the episode or 2 that it should only take, because zombies.

We've made massive strides in tech and other fields in the last 20 years. While we pictured maybe crazy shit in space we didn't realize the insane other advanced we have made in information tech (fuck fitting 256 gb's in a flash drive, i had a 500mb hard drive back then), 3d printing organs, etc.

I would hope we would at least be traveling around our own solar system in the next 200 years. Something like more information was created in the last 20 years in comparison to all of human history before that.

Definitely going to give this show a chance despite syfy.

well without getting into too many spoilers. with the series set 200 years away, would mean that in less than 20 years we would have to colonize Mars. as far as i can tell, the books don't give dates, just one story covers 10ish years and the 1st novel takes place 150 years later.

Hung alum Thomas Jane has nabbed the starring role in the cable network's adaptation of James S.A. Corey's Leviathan Wakes book series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.....
Three-time Golden Globe-nominee Jane will play the world-weary Miller, a native of "the Asteroid Belt" between Mars and Jupiter. Miller is a detective for a corporate security force operating as the law in the Belt. Ragged, in search of something even he can't identify, Miller remains a dedicated cop with great instincts who discovers a newfound sense of purpose when he's put in charge of the investigation into a missing heiress.

Looks alright, I don't know the source material at all but I hear its pretty good. Looks like they are going for dark and gritty like BSG but it doesn't look quite there to me, could have been just how they filmed back them dunno.

Miller being the main character is a good move given my opinion of Holden, but makes me wonder where the show will go if it succeeds. He, Holden, is a rogue captain. His ship isn't rogue. Further explanation can be spoilery. In the book they're basically both main characters.

There should be one parallel to GoT at least, we should not spoil the TV show as book readers. As books, I'd say they're well above average. They wobble between space opera and hard sci-fi.

Has SyFy ever made something good? This sounds interesting, but my eyes glaze over when I see SyFy.

Even though it got weird, I thought BSG was pretty good. Enjoyed Continuum, though I think we can thank Showcase.ca for that more than SyFy. I am hoping these new shows make good on their promise made recently to step up their game.

for original programing, this might be the best source material that have gotten.

Whether you liked the story or the cliffhanger they left it on or not, Ascension was a HUGE step up from anything Syfy has put out in a long time. If they continue on that trend, I have a decent amount of hope for their future.

cuz space is cold, Wakandan

looks pretty good, i just finished reading book 4 (cibola burns) and the story is pretty good, its kept expanding its scope from solar to multi-star to galaxy wide so they definitely have a lot of leg room to move the show into if it is a hit. while stuff like ringworld, revelation space, commonwealth saga, etc are more "epic" scifi space operas this is a pretty good series and I will definitely be watching the whole thing.

season 1 will be 10 episodes but they haven't set an air date yet

it did have a big mass effect vibe to it too, although everyone keeps saying game of thrones in space (its not, really). grrm apparently is a fan

Was that a blanket "hanging" over people banging in zero G? wat
In space, no one can hear you scream...unless you're some 80 year old Florida woman crying to the FCC that her eyes have been defiled by the filth on TV.
