"adjusting for inflation" is pretty worthless, yeah no shit movies aren't doing as well as in the past. ticket prices have skyrocketed, what used to be a $20 family outing is now over $100. My F4 and Superman tickets were each $18 for matinee shows, $22+ for evening premium screens. Kids don't go to see the same movie 20 times in the summer anymore, they can stay at home and have endless varied entertainment.

gone with the wind made like $3.5 billion adjusted for inflation because in 1940 your choices for entertainment were going to the theaters, whistling at a white woman, or hanging a black guy for whistling at a white woman

Superman or F4 were never gonna do Deadpool 3 numbers, they are just calibrating what Disney/DC can expect mid tier non team up movies can do. The only real big question at this point is whether Doomsday and Secret Wars can each do $1.5b+ or not. If they can't, the days of billion dollar superhero movies are mostly over.

Adjusted for inflation means how many butts were in seats. When movie tickets were $5 houses cost 100K. Now movie tickets are $25 and houses cost 500k. Duh.

that is perhaps the dumbest take i've ever seen so far.

Dinosaur movie did good? Dinosaur movie always does good kids love dinosaurs. fucking retarded ass 8 year olds and their shitty choice in movies!

Superman was just an absolute shit film with decent acting largely making up for a shit plot/story, it could of done great if it wasn't written by a sperg pedo

Fantastic Four suffers from a shit fucking cast just completely miscast entirely, and clearly it was going to be a woke girlboss film and was saved only in editing.

When I was a kid if I was patient I could see a movie at the local bargain cinema for 1-2 dollars plus there were coupons and specials. A VHS tape was 20 to 30 dollars. Even if I was going to nice theaters back then it would still be a fraction of the price of that age's physical media. Now it's basically gone the other way. The ticket's the expensive way to see a movie.

Crazy.

To be fair, if it didn't overtake Cap Falcon domestically today, it will tomorrow, and will overtake Ant-Man 3 before the weekend is out.

It seems inconceivable FF will hit the $340M Thor 4 hit, much less the $360M of GotG 3, however.

Internationally, this is no GotG 3 either - FF had 1/5th the opening GotG3 did in China, 1/4th in South Korea, and roughly 2/3rds the openings in Europe and Australia. Maybe its Pedro, but most of Latin America is at 80+% of GotG3.

Unfortunately, that means that (currently) FF4 is only getting ~46% of its money internationally, which is _below_ both Cap Falcon and Thunderbolts (movies that have US military characters), though above Superman. The arguments that the current poor international box office take is due to anti-american military opinions looks like complete nonsense (shocking, I know), and more that those countries don't have the nostalgia for Golden Age characters / time periods that the US does (for the moment).

--

As far as movie prices go, yes, movie prices rise from inflation, but not all market prices rise equivalently. Even before Covid, theaters were acknowledging the impacts of DVD and the beginning of streaming services and ripping out their old seating for premium loungers, better stereo, IMAX, etc., losing a large % of their seats in the process but trying to make up for it with premium pricing.

The 1940s? Please. Everyone knows the peak of cinema was the 1920s. Getting zoinked out of your gourd on OTC opium and cocaine infused patent medicines and then going to see Fritz Lang's Metropolis or Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin was the height of fashion.

I say this in so many threads. Every time you go see something just because it's a habit even though you know it's retarded, you're ensuring you just get more of it.
Nah. Movies are shit because the people making them are shit. Hollywood's take is still about half what it was pre-covid.

This alone should be proof to them they are fucking things up, but nah. Hollywood has completely forgotten how to movie.

I get tickets online for the one big theatre here. I always choose the military discount tickets because it's $17 vs. the $22-27 whether you get IMAX or not. I am a veteran but they've never once checked my ID to verify and we take our own snacks. The wife insists on carrying a Mary Poppins style fucking bag, which only good use is for smuggling in snacks.

Nah. Movies are shit because the people making them are shit.

This is pretty much it. We watched the Jaws @ 50 documentary last night. You see the difference in how they did things back in the 1970s vs today and it explains it all really. Spielberg only used 8 actual actors in the entirety of Jaws. Everyone else in that movie was a local on Martha's Vineyard. Everyone. Like actual speaking roles, not just people laying on the beach. His reason? It would be more authentic to use locals. Quint's Indianapolis speech? It was written as 10 minutes of monologue and Robert Shaw told him people would fall asleep. He asked him the night before to let him rewrite it and Spielberg let him do the revision sight unseen. Side note: Shaw asked permission to have a drink first before the take so he could "get into the role." He got so drunk he couldn't shoot the scene (it was a night shoot so he drank all day). Shaw apologized and said he would do it sober the next night. Result: Shaw added the sardonic smiles during the shorter story he tells and it creates one of the best scenes put on film.

No DEI hires, no ideological agenda, making decisions solely based on what would make the best possible film. Result? Lines wrapped around city blocks to see the film and the highest grossing film of all time up to that point.

i walked in with a chic fila bag (spicy deluxe, waffle fries, cookie) and bought a soda at my AMC F4 screening, acne teenage kid didn't give a fuck. its the first time i've ever snuck "real" food into a theater and it was a game changer, eating a nice hot chicken sandwich is 100x better than shitty candy or popcorn

ive read you can say you are a diabetic fat fuck and need the food if they hassle you LOL
