The Johnny Carson era was peak late night talk show. Letterman, Conan, and Craig Ferguson were fucking hilarious, as well as really good hosts that got a lot of good interviews with their guests. The rest since the 00s on have been pure dog shit.
I was hoping for a grab'm by the pussy kind of talkshow. It's the right political clima. What's holding them back?

I theory that could also be Gutfeld over on Fox. Who has been gaining viewership.

But I agree with the consensus. Carson was the grand silver age, Conan/Letterman/Ferguson represented the golden age.

But then again Colbert was, if you are to believe the press, running a show that was losing $40m a year. You can only do that so long before you're cancelled no matter how much the CIA loves you. (Especially once USAID dried up)

Yeah, it's possible that Trump wanted him fired and the suits were like "sounds like a win/win to us". It's not like the show was good or popular.

I was late to the game on Craig Ferguson during his time on air. I think it was seeing some of his clips on Youtube or some shit that got me really watching him towards the end.

He came across as genuine and funny on the fly like he didn't give a fuck. Every other show during that time felt like overly scripted horseshit.

It was still getting more than 2 mil viewers, so it was arguably popular.

I don't know how you manage to lose $40m though, I was honestly surprised that it *cost* more than $40m, let alone that it lost that much.

I'm pretty skeptical on the 'it was all Trump!' theory in any case - even if publicly accusing your boss of criminal conspiracy wasn't enough to get you fired, he wasn't actually fired - his show is still going for like a year anyway. As a way to 'shut him up' this ranks below shouting 'hey, shut up!' at random clouds.

reading more about it, advertisers nowadays drop instantly anything that is controversial and they have extremely fine grain control over what they advertise. So a spot on Colbert will be tagged with anti-Trump, liberal, progressive, democrat, Harris, etc keywords and 90% of advertisers will decline to advertise on the show.

Fallon gets a lot less viewers but he stays super apolitical so the same keywords aren't tagged on him, so he gets more ad money.

I dunno, i haven't seen an ad in years so i still don't even understand who the fuck these advertisers are trying to reach, people asleep with the TV on? Airport TVs?

Its really that simple. While Biden was president it wasn't considered a big deal to advertise on liberal shows, but now with Trump in power big corporations are scared to death that suddenly they will get in the cross hairs of MAGA/Trump and they will flee anything that has a whiff of that, whether its Colbert or twitch (hence the steep drop in twitch revenue) or youtube channels (same).

so yeah, it makes sense that the show was losing money even though it had more viewers, its basically like twitch streams, there are some super popular ones where people act retarded or chicks are showing their tits and while it gets them donations and subs they don't get mainstream advertisers. I've noticed in my podcasts too, there are a few (Lorehounds, Stuff you should know) that used to be have snarky political talk randomly but they have cut back hard on that shit and go out of their way to say "oh, we keep politics and social commentary out of the podcast" because its apparently an advertising death sentence.

thats really the way it should be, the problem of course is that winds change and in a few years when liberals are back in power they will shift back to all the usual bullshit inserted everywhere. Maybe all the trannies will kill themselves in the meantime.
